Chapter 7

Chapter 7

As the Kaihara Festival and the tennis club's qualifying tournament got underway, Sanada and Yanagi visited Yukimura once every one to two weeks, alternating visits.

The Kaihara Festival is a cultural event held by Rikkai University. In fact, every school has a campus festival with a different name. On this day, every club and class can bring their family and friends to play and show off campus life.

The difference is that Rikkai University's Kaihara Festival is a school festival organized jointly by junior high schools, high schools, and universities every three years. Of course, this year is not one of them.

Rikkai University is a private school with a long history. Sanada's discipline committee is primarily responsible for negotiating the various clubs' territories before the Kaihara Festival, ensuring that visitors don't experience any unusual incidents, such as fainting, during the festival. They also conduct a final inspection after the festival, and after the festival, each club is responsible for restoring the spaces they used.

"Sanada, a temporary storage area for items has been set up in the tennis club's open space. Some members of the tennis club will be on the inner court, and other students who have applied for space will be on the outer court. For the class activity, Aikawa-kun from the dance club has organized several classmates to sign up for a group program on behalf of the class." Yanagi Renji checked with Sanada.

Sanada recorded the time, saving some time for class activities. After the inspection, he could take over Yanagi Renji's position in the tennis club area. "Understood. On the first day of the Kaihara Festival, I will lead the team around the entire venue. After that, I will alternate with you on the rotation."

"Okay, by the way. Sanada, what items have you prepared to participate in the simulation store?" asked Yanagi Renji.

Sanada thought about what he could offer. "Tea, shogi, or calligraphy."

Shogi is Sanada's other activity besides kendo and tennis. He plays with his grandfather, but rarely wins. Calligraphy copybooks—now that he's developed his own style, he doesn't need many anymore. Tea is his grandfather's newfound passion. My brother Shinichiro and Sanada share a small box whenever they go for walks together. But Sanada prefers plain water and always sets high standards for himself. The only thing he has to make up the numbers is his recently replaced kendo equipment...

The tennis club's Kaihara Festival event plan was originally drafted by Yukimura and the other two. They prepared a simulated store with real scenes, prepared items in advance, and held an actual interview and sales experience store so that the students could experience recruitment and work firsthand.

Renji is in charge of the data, Yukimura is in charge of negotiating some products with the handicraft club, and Sanada brings the club members to act as manpower for the transportation.

Let the students who come here truly experience the process of selling jobs, as well as the costs and damage to goods, etc.

Since there is no real loss to the experience, it is not difficult to talk about Yukimura's popularity on campus.

Halfway through the plan, many things were changed. Now the simulation store is undertaken by the entire tennis club, and the tennis club has become the main body of the simulation store.

We've partnered with many craft clubs. For example, the craft club makes small, everyday items, like gloves and scarves, which are different from the larger exhibits at the Kaihara Festival. The gardening club, for example, chooses to showcase and sell plants directly at its own location, eliminating the need for the tennis club's courts.

Many students can deposit their unwanted second-hand items in the tennis club's simulated store for sale. The simulated store was transformed into a flea market-like appearance by Sanada and Yanagi.

The tennis club will charge a commission from the venue when selling the items. To save manpower and time, write down the item information and price on the tennis club registration card, leave the lowest acceptable price, and the tennis club will take care of the rest.

Tennis club members will not be charged a commission on venue fees for participating in activities, and the price of personal items sold will be entirely theirs.

The proceeds from this Kaihara Festival basically go towards a part of the club's activities expenses, and another part is used to strive for school bonuses. There will be many awards at the Rikkai Kaihara Festival, such as first place in sales, first place in popularity, and basically the top few will receive bonuses. These are all sources of additional activity fees for the club.

Yanagi Renji wrote down the items prepared by Sanada. They didn't take up much space, so Sanada might not have thought of it. The most popular items were probably the kendo equipment. Those people in the kendo club didn't know why they admired Sanada, and the first one to be affected was the club's leader.

There was a knock on the door, and Yagyu Hiroshi entered the Discipline Committee's activity room, carrying a table with the Kaihara Festival location chart. "Yanagi is here too, so we don't have to go to the Student Council to confirm. Sanada, senior Tanaka from Class C, third year, wants to change seats. The smell of snacks is disturbing his theme shop. Also, Takahashi-kun from the cooking club and Kobayashi-senpai from the gardening club are arguing about the division of the venue. Junior Yamaguchi has requested a new spot for an art exhibition or some drawing activity. It's getting late, and there's no more space in the area up front..."

Disputes over venues occur every year at the Kaihara Festival. Unplanned new designs or accidental mistakes may result in two students applying for venues at the same location, which all need to be adjusted later.

"Yagyu, move Takahashi-kun to the snack street. Ask Senior Tanaka if the Horticulture Department's booth will interfere with each other. The space will be smaller than before. I remember there are some spaces reserved for volunteers at the Kaihara Festival, rest areas for those maintaining order, and for mishaps. They're just a bit out of the way. If no other students have applied, have Yamaguchi-kun check out the remaining spaces and choose a suitable one. Time is running out, so hurry." Sanada confirmed the location. Usually concise and to the point, Sanada was incredibly thorough in his duties.

It was brief because that one sentence was enough to express Sanada's meaning.

"Got it. Here's the patrol roster for the day. Sanada, that's all the Discipline Committee responsibilities." After finishing his Discipline Committee duties, Yagyu Hiroshi had to go back to the classroom to make arrangements for logistics. His class activities hadn't gone as planned, so they were scheduled at a cafe, with students taking turns serving as waiters. Afterward, he had to go to the tennis club to put out the mystery novels he had prepared for sale.

Sanada nodded and distributed the event coupons belonging to Yagyu Hiroshi and Niou Masaharu.

Members of each club have free coupons for club activities. For example, the coupons for the cooking club can be used to eat snacks from any cooking club member’s store during the Kaihara Festival. Students will exchange coupons to enrich the variety.

"Then I'll go first, Sanada, Yanagi." Yagyu Hiroshi suggested taking Sanada back to the scene to get busy.

The location of the Kaihara Festival cannot be changed without reason. The location is reserved in the early stage according to the application time and the planned scale. Students who apply for the store must also have the approval of the club director and the teacher's approval, and apply to the student union. The student union members will review and approve the submitted materials.

The subsequent space is left to the Discipline Committee to maintain discipline and make reasonable adjustments within the complete framework.

"Well, Sanada, I'll go to the student union to prepare the invitation letters, as well as the invitation letter for Hyotei." Yanagi Renji and Sanada handed over a lot of things, such as the patrol schedule, which the student union also had to keep a copy of. The student union was responsible for the overall framework and the final collective performance in the activity classroom, which was where classes and clubs prepared collective projects such as drama, music, and dance.

Yanagi Renji was in charge of the student council. Even though the Kaihara Festival wasn't a large-scale event held every three years, there was still some collaboration with the seniors. Invitations were sent out every year, including to some elementary schools in Kanagawa, allowing them to experience the atmosphere of junior high school in advance. Of course, the tennis club's strategist couldn't forget the invitation to Hyotei, the friendly exchange school for the Rikkai University tennis club...

As the Kaihara Festival is about to be held, basically all the clubs are focusing on the activities of the Kaihara Festival. Even the tennis club has limited training space for the players. These days, everyone shares a common field, and the training requirements are the minimum daily basis, such as swinging the racket, running laps and other related physical exercises.

Sanada patrolled the campus, switching from checking students for violations to checking the venue for compliance. "Sudo-senpai, please don't block the aisles with tables and chairs. Kuroki-kun, if the frame can't be erected in time, your booth will be designated as a public rest area, and the Discipline Committee will lead a temporary conversion this morning. Ishida-kun, please reinforce the outdoor performance stand for added security. Aso-kun..."

After completing his duties as a discipline committee member, Sanada went to the tennis club with his backpack.

"Sanada, you're late too." Marui Bunta was placing his belongings in the chosen position, including bubble gum of various flavors and some curious snacks.

The reason why Marui Bunta came late was because there was a dessert shop for a class activity. Marui Bunta was the main chef, so he confirmed the food reserves and packaging before coming.

Jackal Kuwabara accompanied Bunta, bringing his favorite CDs. "Over there are the study materials Yanagi just put down. The largest area in the back, covered by the cloth, is Niou's handicrafts. Yagyu's mystery novels are placed with Yanagi's materials. Sanada, how much space do you need?"

"Just a little is enough." Sanada took out a few boxes of tea, calligraphy books and shogi pieces, and finally a few wooden swords and knives made of different materials.

Kendo protective gear is made according to personal size, but kendo swords only differ in material. Now Sanada directly uses swords from the kendo field. These wooden swords in good condition can be sold to serve as funds for the tennis club. Some of these are prizes won by Sanada in kendo competitions, and some are swords he once liked and bought with his pocket money.

Kirihara Akaya was one of the last to arrive, having failed his English quiz. Luckily, he didn't have to worry about being late for club activities during the Kaihara Festival. "Wow! As expected of Vice-President Sanada!"

Kirihara Akaya looked at the wooden swords and wooden knives brought by Vice Minister Sanada with shining eyes. There were all kinds of them, and one of them looked particularly sharp. Even though it was made of wood, it felt like a real sword.

After putting away the game cartridge he had completed, Kirihara Akaya circled around Vice Minister Sanada's sword.

"Hey, Kirihara, you have that game. It's quite old and has been discontinued." Marui Bunta noticed that among Kirihara's pile of game cartridges there was an unpopular game that he had not received yet.

Kirihara knew which one it was and picked up a game cartridge. "This game is really fun, but the graphics aren't great right now. I'm planning on selling these completed games and buying this year's new hot-blooded fighting game."

Normally, it is convenient to go directly to the game store to recycle the original pictures, as the price there is very low. Qiyuan will only release a few recently completed games when he does not have enough pocket money. This time, he happened to catch up with the tennis club's activities, so he planned to clear out all the stock.

Sanada looked around and saw a wide variety of items on sale. Some classmates were carrying small appliances and placing them on the empty spaces on the tennis court, covering them with cloth, waiting for the Kaihara Festival to begin tomorrow.

The families that can afford to send their children to private schools are not too bad financially, so their second-hand items are in good condition. Some of them have never been collected and are sold because their preferences have changed.

Most of the members of the tennis club are self-employed, and the regular members led by Sanada will include the profits in the club's operating expenses.

Just before closing time, Sanada collected the detailed inventory sheets his teammates had compiled and handed them to the Jackal Kuwabara. The Jackal Kuwabara and Niou Masaharu were the primary organizers of the tennis club's morning activities. Sanada generally avoided communicating directly with Niou Masaharu unless there was no other way, and the two of them often had inexplicable disagreements.
