Chapter 29
In the evening, my brother-in-law Li Qize also came.
He stood at the door, looked in, and without saying a word, turned and walked away.
Tao Zhi was puzzled: "What is my brother-in-law doing?"
Cheng Xiangmei went out to check, but saw no one in the corridor. She came back and complained to Tao Zhi, "I wonder what he's up to now."
After a while, several nurses came with a stretcher and started to move Cheng Man.
Tao Zhi quickly stepped forward and asked: "What are you doing?"
Li Qize walked in from outside: "Sister-in-law, let's change a room for Manman."
"Brother-in-law, I appreciate your kindness, but Manman is not fit to move now."
Li Qize hadn't considered this. He thought for a moment and said, "Then why don't we move the patient in the same room out?"
After discussing with the patient's family, the nurse quickly changed the patient's room.
The nominal double room actually became a single room.
Li Qize even asked the nurse to disinfect the ward and only sat down after it was completely clean.
Tao Zhi saw that he was doing it smoothly and it seemed that his brother-in-law was very familiar with this process.
Tao Zhi nodded at him and looked at her sister-in-law, asking her about it. Cheng Xiangmei shrugged and spread his hands, indicating that it was just as you saw.
Li Qize asked, "Is Manman feeling better now?"
Cheng Xiangmei replied, "He had eight stitches and is in a coma now."
"So serious?"
Cheng Xiangmei stepped on him and said, "Who would be hospitalized for observation when he's fine?"
"What did the doctor say?"
"Let's observe closely today and do a CT scan tomorrow."
Li Qi Ze was at a loss for words and didn't know how to comfort people. He sat for a while, then his cell phone rang and he was about to leave.
He asked Cheng Xiangmei: "Are you going to stay or go home?"
Cheng Xiangmei said, "I'll accompany my sister-in-law tonight."
Tao Zhi quickly refused: "Cheng Xing and the others will be here later, I have someone to accompany me, you should go home."
"They all have to go to work, how can they have time to accompany you?"
"Time is squeezed out. Brother and sister take turns to rest, and the other one can come and accompany me."
"Why are you bothering them? I'm free, I'll come and accompany you."
"I have a bed to sleep on, where do you want to sleep?" Tao Zhi asked her.
"I'll sleep on the sofa." But when she looked back, there was only a wooden bench.
"Go home and have a good sleep, and come back to accompany me tomorrow." Tao Zhi urged her to go back.
Cheng Xiangmei had no choice but to follow Li Qize and leave first.
She was still reluctant to leave: "Sister-in-law, remember to call me if you have anything."
Tao Zhi waved her hand and told her to leave quickly.
The ward suddenly became quiet, with only Cheng Man's shallow breathing being heard.
Tao Zhi had just lied to Cheng Xiangmei. Cheng Hui and Cheng Xing would not come. There were two little babies at home, and as parents they had to take care of them first.
The old man wanted to rush back, but Tao Zhi told him to wait until tomorrow. He was toiling away late at night, and even at his age, he didn't feel tired.
Cheng Jun had been busy with a new project recently, leaving early and returning late every day. Tao Zhi hadn't seen him for several days. Furthermore, due to gender differences, it was not convenient for him to take care of his sister.
There was silence all around, and Tao Zhi fell into endless regret.
She should never have entrusted her life and property to the hands of an outsider. Instead, she was careless and led to today's tragedy.
Her four children, like Cheng Hui before her, nearly drove her to death, yet she couldn't bring herself to hit him. Her and her husband's educational approach was to neither spank nor scold. If they made mistakes, they would reason with them, breaking things down and analyzing them. If explanations still didn't make sense, they would let the experience teach them a lesson. Only after they had suffered the consequences themselves did they realize their parents wouldn't harm them.
Tao Zhi hated herself too. Cheng Man had been at this school for a whole semester, and she hadn't even visited her once. It was her senior year, and other parents were acting like they were facing a crisis, meticulously preparing for the day, desperately trying to provide their children with nourishment, hoping their children would focus on their studies. But she, on the other hand, had done nothing, placing more importance on a shabby house than on Cheng Man.
Thinking of this, Tao Zhi raised his hand and slapped himself twice.
In this world, everyone treats people differently. Cheng Man was a transfer student, and she felt like she had no one to turn to. She always picked on the weak, and she was forcing herself to help someone, so wouldn't she be the one to take revenge?
Cheng Man should have been on high alert when she was being insulted. Unfortunately, she was taking chances, thinking, "Students, how bad can they be?"
The result was that the precious thing she held in her hands was beaten to the point of being in danger of death, and thrown to the ground like abandoned garbage, with no one to rescue or care about it. Tao Zhi didn't dare to think about what would have happened to Cheng Man if she had been a step later.
She finally understood this truth through a bloody lesson, but it was too late.
Tao Zhi let the crystal tears slide down from the corners of her eyes.
On the other hand, anger was burning like a tidal wave, making Tao Zhi's blood boil.
Every wrong has its perpetrator, every debt has its creditor. Tao Zhi engraved all of this deeply in his heart.

Cheng Jun was sound asleep in his bed when he was woken up. He had just come from the riverbed, where he had been digging sand all day, and after taking a shower, he fell asleep.
He now owns a sand brick factory with a friend. When they're shorthanded, the boss goes wherever they need him. Today, the dredging equipment arrived, but the workers took leave, so Cheng Jun had to do it himself.
Of course, they have obtained a mining license and are digging sand from the river within the licensed area.
For small start-up factories, this is the best way to control costs.
Cheng Jun was dazed. He took the phone and said, "Hello?"
Yu Sifei breathed a sigh of relief: "You are finally willing to answer the phone."
Cheng Jun yawned: "What's the matter?"
"Your dad made a few calls to the store, and from the sound of it, it seemed like something urgent happened."
Cheng Jun shuddered: "My dad?"
"Yes, your dad. I've delivered the message. I'm busy right now. Please call me back soon. I won't say any more." Yu Sifei hung up the phone.
Cheng Jun first went to make a cup of tea, and then slowly called his father.
"Dad, you looking for me?"
Cheng Xiangqian's opening statement was a bombshell: "Your mother said Cheng Man is in the emergency room."
"What?" Cheng Jun jumped up in shock, and the cup and tea fell to the ground with a clatter, and the fragments were scattered all over the floor.
"Dad, speak slowly. What happened to Cheng Man? She went to the emergency room, why didn't Mom call me?" Cheng Jun didn't care about his wet pants and asked questions one after another.
"Your mother said you were beaten, but I don't know the details. I haven't been able to find you all day. Where do you want your mother to look for you?"
Cheng Jun silently took note and decided to buy a mobile phone when he got home.
He looked at the sky and saw that it was already dark. "Dad, tell me which hospital it is. I'll rush back to find Mom right now."
In the middle of the night, Cheng Jun arrived. Covered in starlight and damp, he found a folding bed and lay down by the door.
During the period of observation in the hospital, Cheng Man could not leave her own side for a moment, for fear that if anything happened, someone would be there to watch over her and notify the doctor in time.
Cheng Jun lay down and asked, "Mom, what's going on?"
Tao Zhi handed him the diagnosis.
Cheng Jun, using the hallway light, roughly read: "Scalp laceration, moderate concussion, suspected linear skull fracture, multiple soft tissue contusions throughout the body."
"Mom, is this serious or not?"
"Fortunately, there is no serious head injury and no spinal injury."
"Spine? It's not written here."
Tao Zhi sighed deeply: "You don't know, Manman was hit on the back of the neck. When I saw the bruise, I was so scared that my heart almost jumped out of my chest."
Cheng Jun felt his anger rising, his face starting to burn. "Who could be so cruel?"
"The police are still investigating." Tao Zhi lowered her voice. "When you get back, call Wen Xu for me and ask him to continue the investigation. If you don't have enough money, come to me for it." After a pause, she added, "If there's any danger, retreat. Don't worry about gains and losses. Safety is the most important thing."
Cheng Jun was silent for a moment: "Mom, I understand. It's so late, you should go to bed first. We will change in the second half of the night."
Tao Zhi lay down and slept until dawn.
When she woke up, Cheng Jun was yawning with his hair in a mess and his mouth wide open.
"Why didn't you wake me?"
"It's okay, I'll go home and catch up on my sleep later."
Cheng Jun brought cleaning supplies, and after Tao Zhi finished washing up, she went downstairs to buy breakfast.
After they finished eating, Cheng Jun washed his face with cold water and said, "Mom, I'm going home first. I have to pick up Dad in the afternoon. I'll come to take over your shift in the evening."
Tao Zhi patted him and said, "Thank you for your hard work. Your dad will ask Xiao Zhao to pick her up."
Cheng Jun hugged his old mother and said, "Mom, don't worry too much. Good luck will come to those who are lucky. Manman will be well soon."
Tao Zhi smiled: "Yes, yes, I will definitely do it."
In the afternoon, the police arrived at the hospital. Fortunately, the patient in the adjacent bed had been moved, so there was no one else in the ward, and without the onlookers, it felt much more comfortable.
The police officer said, "Ms. Tao, we've visited dozens of households in the surrounding area, large and small, and no one saw the crime, so we want to question the person involved."
Tao Zhi pulled aside the curtain and showed it to the police officer: "She just went for a checkup."
The plainclothes officer asked, "How long will this inspection take?"
Tao Zhi shook her head: "You'll have to ask the doctor about this."
The other policeman went downstairs to find a doctor after hearing this.
Tao Zhi asked the remaining police officer, "Excuse me, did you find any witnesses when I called the police last time?"
The policeman was stunned for a moment, "Have you called the police before?"
"Yes, just three days ago."
"Why did you call the police?"
"My daughter was clearly bullied, but the teacher didn't even investigate. They simply labeled her the one at fault, saying she was causing trouble in the school fight. The head teacher wouldn't listen to my explanation and just kept criticizing her. This concerns my child's reputation, so I had no choice but to call the police and ask them to help investigate the matter."
At this time, the police officer ran up and said breathlessly: "The doctor said that we have to wait for the results, which may not be that fast."
The plainclothes police officer said to him, "Let's not wait here. Let's go to the school first."
He turned to Tao Zhi and said, "Come back when we're done. Remember to tell your daughter to think carefully about what happened. The more detailed and specific it is, the better."
As soon as he finished speaking, they were almost at the stairs, and Tao Zhi swallowed the word "OK".
It didn't take long before Cheng Xing came back pushing Cheng Man, and Cheng Xiangqian walked beside his daughter.
Tao Zhi went forward and asked, "What was the result?"
