Chapter 14
At night, lying on the hard bed, Chen Lanjun stared at the moonlight through the mosquito net in a daze.
After all, it was because he didn't have enough money. If Chen Zhisheng knew his daughter was a millionaire, he would not even stay in the guesthouse and would sleep on the floor in the cafeteria.
Just kidding, Comrade Lao Chen was also the youngest son of a landlord. When his grandmother was alive, she once joked that when Chen Zhisheng was a baby, he had to be swaddled in silk, otherwise he would cry loudly. It can be seen that he was not born to love hardship.
It is indeed a truth that the economic base determines the superstructure.
She subconsciously touched the pillow, and found an envelope inside, which contained most of her assets, a total of 90 yuan. This money was definitely enough for her to study and live, but it was far from enough to make her family worry-free.
She sighed softly. She had to study, but she also had to think carefully about ways to make money.
With her thoughts all over the place, she tossed and turned for a long time before finally falling asleep. As a result of sleeping late, Chen Lanjun was dragged out by Cao Hongyao the next morning.
The squad leader was really dedicated to his job. He was nervous at first, worried that Chen Lanjun had a fever, but he was relieved only after confirming that she was just sleepy and couldn't get up, and had no other discomfort.
"Hurry up and wash up. I've got some water for you."
Chen Lanjun looked at the students running outside and realized that it was indeed getting late, so she said, "I'm going to the bathroom, you hurry to the classroom."
Cao Hongyao hesitated for a moment. She has always been a rigorous person with a good sense of time. Besides, she had to preside over the morning reading class, so she reminded him to "hurry up" and then went to class first.
By the time Chen Lanjun had quickly taken care of her personal hygiene, she was already very close to being late.
The bell rang, and the few students still outside the teaching building started running.
Chen Lanjun looked towards the place where the bell rang and slightly quickened her pace, but still did not run.
According to her estimation, if she could run into the classroom before the bell rang, she would be able to make it to the Asian Games.
She walked up the stairs leisurely and ran into the deputy monitor Liu Li at the corner.
Liu Li was stunned at first, then he smiled and said, "Let's go up together."
Morning reading had already begun. Teacher Qin was staring at the window. When he saw Chen Lanjun and Liu Li coming over, he was speechless for a moment.
"Ms. Liu, tell me yourself, how many times have you been late?"
Liu Li said: "I was wrong. Don't worry, I'll be on duty for sanitation today."
She nudged Chen Lanjun with her elbow and said, "According to the rules of our class, those who are late have to take charge of the duty. Today we are on duty together."
"Okay." Chen Lanjun agreed immediately, admitting her mistake in a good manner, "I'm sorry, Teacher Qin. I didn't sleep well last night, so I got up late today."
Liu Li said, "Why didn't our good monitor wake you up? Are you from the same dormitory?"
"I did, but I had diarrhea." Chen Lanjun said sincerely.
Teacher Qin nodded and said, "Okay, after school you and Liu Li will clean up together. Come with me to the office first."
Chen Lanjun followed Teacher Qin into the office.
Teacher Qin took out a stack of test papers from the drawer and said, "These are the test papers for the opening exam. They have all been taken. Do them now so that I can see how you are doing in your studies. If you have any obvious weaknesses in any subject, I will pay special attention to them."
Chen Lanjun studied science, and there were six test papers in total: Chinese, mathematics, politics, physics, chemistry and English.
She thought about it and picked up the English test paper to do first.
By the time all six papers are finished, the day is over.
When the bell rang, Chen Lanjun quickly finished her political exam. When Teacher Qin walked into the office, she handed over a stack of completed papers.
"You've finished it so quickly?" Teacher Qin was very surprised. She had originally planned to let Chen Lanjun finish it in two days.
"Yes, I've finished it."
Chen Lanjun answered all the questions she could, and left the ones she was not familiar with blank. After all, it was a test to find out the basic knowledge, so there was no need to deduct even a single point. The main purpose was to find out the gaps and fill them. She was good at grasping the key points, and once her purpose was clear, she could answer the questions faster.
Teacher Qin flipped through the paper. Even though my composition was a little sloppy, I had really finished it all.
She rolled the paper into a bucket, put it in her pocket, and said, "Okay, I'll correct it tonight. You must not be late again tomorrow."
"Okay, sure."
Chen Lanjun still remembered that she had to do her duty today, so she came out of the office and went back to the classroom.
At this time, most people had left. Liu Li was still there, but she was reading a book, and another person was doing the cleaning.
Perhaps seeing the confusion in Chen Lanjun's eyes, Liu Li put the book forward and whispered, "I gave her a meal ticket, and she was happy to help with the cleaning."
Chen Lanjun did not comment, just said "oh" softly and returned to her seat.
Cao Hongyao, who had just entered the classroom, heard it, frowned, and said, "Liu Li, it's not good for you to do this."
Liu Li held his chin with his hand and glanced at her lightly: "Why not?"
Cao Hongyao had a gloomy face and said nothing.
But a short-haired roommate who followed behind Cao Hongyao spoke up: "You are acting like a capitalist, exploiting your classmates."
These words were a bit harsh. Although the movement was not very active nowadays, the words "capitalist behavior" and "exploitation" still made the people present jump.
The students who were chatting, packing their bags, and preparing to go home stopped what they were doing and looked at Liu Li, Cao Hongyao and others.
The classmate who was helping to clean the room was completely frightened. He looked like he was about to cry, and his voice was trembling: "I, I didn't..."
Liu Li stretched out his legs and kicked the desk. The desk slid on the floor with a piercing sound.
She crossed her arms and said, "The grades aren't that good, but they are very good at making accusations. What, are you going to post big-character posters at the school gate and engage in armed struggles next? I've seen a lot of this, come on, just come."
The short-haired roommate subconsciously took a step closer to Cao Hongyao, lowered his voice, and muttered, "Everyone knows that your father is the deputy director of the Revolutionary Committee. Who can defeat you?"
"Just talk, why are you just buzzing like a mosquito?" Liu Li said coldly.
The short-haired roommate stopped talking completely and almost shrank behind Cao Hongyao.
Cao Hongyao stretched out a hand, protecting her short-haired roommate behind her back in a soothing manner, and said, "She didn't mean that. We are all classmates..."
Liu Li interrupted her: "That's not what I mean, what does that mean?"
Cao Hongyao pursed her lips and said, "I accidentally said the wrong thing. Don't be so sensitive."
"Sensitive?" Liu Li smiled. She stood up and walked to Cao Hongyao, staring at her.
"Who on earth is it that has nothing to do but speak ill of others all day? My class monitor."
Liu Li raised his chin slightly and said, "Getting first place in the exam is like you are the only smart person in the school. Yes, you were first in the last exam, but I didn't pass it either."
Liu Li's gaze was very aggressive, and her tone of voice was somewhat aggressive, but Cao Hongyao was not afraid and looked at her expressionlessly.
Suddenly, it became quiet. Students from the next class were talking and laughing as they walked out, further accentuating the silence in Class (1).
The silence was broken only when Teacher Qin's voice came from the classroom door: "What are you doing? What's wrong?"
It seems that some students in the corridor went to ask for help.
Liu Li turned his head and said, "I'm listening carefully to the class monitor's instructions. It's okay."
She glanced at Cao Hongyao and said, "The monthly exam is next week anyway, so we'll see."
As soon as he finished speaking, Liu Li pulled out his schoolbag, put it on his shoulder, and asked Chen Lanjun: "Hey, do you want to have dinner together? I'll treat you."
Chen Lanjun, who was enjoying the show, was suddenly dragged to the stage. She looked to the left and saw Cao Hongyao and several students from the countryside looking at her. The short-haired roommate even shook her head slightly, signaling her not to go.
Looking to the right, several classmates who were dressed fashionably and obviously had urban household registration walked silently behind Liu Li, and as usual, they were about to walk out of the classroom with Liu Li.
Chen Lanjun saw this and had a rough idea in her mind. Wow, there are so many things to learn in school.
However, at a time when the treatment of urban and rural residents is so different, this implicit contradiction that extends to campus seems understandable.
But she faced a difficult problem: should she choose Cao Hongyao, who was one of the students like her who came from rural areas but were studious and motivated, or should she choose Liu Li, a student with a good family background and urban household registration?
It's really a bit troublesome.
