Chapter 238 Awakening

Chapter 238 Awakening

At three o'clock in the morning, Meng Anran heard the ringing of her cell phone in a half-asleep state. She looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Zhang Tao calling - something happened with Lu Yi.

She answered the phone, and Zhang Tao couldn't wait to say, "Boss An, Second Young Master Lu is awake."

Those few simple words instantly woke Meng Anran up. She sat up and turned on the bedside lamp. "What's going on? Did Lu Heng and Duan Jingyao go over there?"

Zhang Tao reported the hospital's situation in detail: "The doctor said it's nothing serious and he'll recover after a period of rest. The bodyguards here have already notified Young Master Lu, but we're not sure if they'll come over."

Meng Anran hung up the phone, tapping her fingertips lightly on the phone screen, and fell into deep thought.

Today is the official start of winter, and the rain is falling outside the window again. The sound of raindrops hitting the glass is particularly clear in the silent room.

She stood up and walked to the French window, overlooking the rain-washed city. The neon lights were blurred in the rain, blurring into patches of colorful halos.

After a few minutes of replaying what Konai had said to her in her mind, she resigned herself to picking up her coat and car keys.

Half an hour later, Meng Anran appeared in the corridor of the central hospital.

This time, there was no one outside the ICU. She looked into the ward through the glass window. Lu Yi had woken up and was half leaning against the head of the bed, staring at the ceiling with empty eyes.

The nurse pushed the door open and was stunned when she saw her. "Who are you?"

"Friend." Meng Anran answered briefly.

The nurse hesitated for a moment. "The patient just woke up and needs to rest. It's best not to—"

"Five minutes." Meng Anran interrupted her with an unquestionable tone.

Perhaps her aura was too strong, the nurse finally nodded and made way.

The moment I pushed the door open, the smell of disinfectant hit me in the face.

Lu Yi turned his head, and the moment he saw her, a strange light flashed in his dark eyes.

Meng Anran stood beside the bed, looking down at him condescendingly.

Lu Yi's face was still pale, with gauze wrapped around his forehead and his right arm in a cast. He looked so fragile that he seemed like he would break at the slightest touch.

He smiled, a smile filled with sick satisfaction, "You're here."

"Why didn't you die?" Meng Anran said coldly, "I was already prepared to collect your body."

Lu Yi raised his uninjured hand with difficulty and wanted to touch her, but Meng Anran grabbed his wrist in mid-air.

She leaned over and whispered in his ear, "Lu Yi, I am not your salvation. If you still want to see the sun, you have to climb out of the abyss yourself."

Lu Yi's breathing suddenly became rapid, and his heart rate on the monitor began to soar. He grabbed Meng Anran's wrist with his backhand, and the force was astonishing.

He gasped, "Kill me."

Meng Anran suddenly pulled his hand back and took a step back.

She looked at Lu Yi's crazy eyes and suddenly frowned.

As Cone said, there is no known cause for Lu Yi's illness, but he behaves more violently and crazily than other bipolar patients.

It was as if his illness existed just for the sake of existence.

"I won't let my life be tarnished for you." She said lightly and turned to leave.

"An Ran!" Lu Yi shouted behind her, his voice trembling with despair: "Don't go..."

Meng Anran's hand was already on the door handle. Hearing the almost pleading voice, she suddenly stopped in her tracks. It was as if an electric current flashed through her body, running straight from the soles of her feet to her brain.

She turned back in disbelief and met Lu Yi's eyes, which were filled with madness and obsession, as well as some kind of almost pious expectation that she could not understand.

This was the first time Lu Yi showed emotion, and the first time he appeared so vulnerable, like a child afraid of being abandoned.

"Take good care of your injuries." She said these four words indifferently, turned and left.

But he ran into Lu Heng in the corridor who was asking the doctor about the situation.

Lu Heng's gaze stayed on her for a second, his expression remained calm, but Meng Anran noticed that his fingers curled up slightly.

The crisp sound of high heels echoed in the empty corridor. She walked to Lu Heng's side and heard the doctor ask, "The patient has some hormones in his body. Is he in the habit of taking medication long-term?"

Lu Heng nodded. "He suffers from severe bipolar disorder and usually uses tranquilizers to control his emotions."

The doctor wrote it down in the medical record, lowering his head to write while reminding: "You still have to be careful not to rely too much on medication. Long-term use of sedatives will have adverse effects on the body. If you have a mental illness, you should seek treatment in time."

Meng Anran lowered his eyes and thought for half a second before asking, "Doctor, I'd like to know if the hormones in his body will cause any changes in his body? For example... the loss of melanin."

"There are many types of hormones, and long-term use can cause gene mutations. As you mentioned, albinism isn't hereditary, but rather a loss of melanin, which can be considered a form of genetic change. As for the exact type of hormone in the patient's system, we can't determine that in detail. We might need you to send the sedatives he frequently uses for testing to find out the results."

"Okay, thank you, doctor."

After watching the doctor walk away, Meng Anran glanced at Lu Heng and asked, "Is there something wrong with your sedative?"

Lu Heng stared at her meaningfully, with a hint of smile in his eyes, "You seem to care about him a lot."

"I'm afraid I'll die in his hands."

"If he gets into an accident first, you won't have to worry."

A cold light suddenly flashed in Meng Anran's eyes, and she stared at Lu Heng dangerously, "I can't do such a cruel thing."

Lu Heng put his hands in his trouser pockets and said leisurely, "Only you can save him."

Whether pulling him out of the abyss or letting him die with one's own hands, it is a kind of redemption for him.

But Meng Anran didn't want to.

"You blood-related brothers don't care, so why should I bother?" She raised the corners of her lips, but the smile did not reach her eyes.

"Blood relationship is not important." Lu Heng looked at Meng Anran, his expression becoming gloomy. "What disease Lu Yi has, what caused the loss of melanin, or even whether he can survive, none of this matters. What matters is the way you look at us."

Meng Anran suddenly laughed sarcastically, "Don't you feel hypocritical when you say such things?"

She took a step closer to Lu Heng and said, "I will never forget how I survived those seventeen years. How do you expect me to look at you?"

Lu Heng's eyes darkened, the cold light of the corridor reflected on his well-defined face, making it look particularly sharp. He lowered his head slightly, and his voice was low and slow: "So you hate us."

This is not a question, but a statement.

Meng Anran sneered, her fingertips unconsciously rubbing the strap of her bag. She raised her eyes, a cold look in them. "It's just emotional hatred. I don't want to have anything to do with you anymore."

Lu Heng stared at her, suddenly reached into the inner pocket of his suit, took out a photo, and handed it to her.

Meng Anran lowered her eyes and her pupils suddenly contracted.

The photo shows a dim room with the walls densely covered with photos.

It's all hers.

These photos were taken on various occasions from when she was seventeen years old to the present, including some taken secretly and some taken publicly, and there are even a few photos of her alone at home.

In front of the photo wall, there stood a thin figure, his silver-white hair almost transparent under the light - it was Lu Yi.

"He's been watching you." Lu Heng's voice was soft, but like a knife. "If you don't help him escape from the abyss, you will never be able to escape from him. You know very well that he is a complete lunatic."
