From Yu Garden to 301
When they arrived downstairs, the driver, Xiao Yu, was already there to greet them. "Miss Chen, where are you going? Shall I drive you?"
Zhiwei said, "Xiaoyu, thank you for your hard work. Let's go for a stroll in Yu Garden."
Xu Anyi looked at Zhiwei strangely. Zhiwei helped her into the car and said in a low voice, "A friend arranged it for me. I was worried that there would be too much to do these days and it would be inconvenient for me to come and go."
Since they were in the car, Xu Anyi didn't want to ask too many questions. After arriving at Yu Garden, Zhiwei told Xiaoyu that they would just play around in the vicinity and that he could explore on his own. She would call him when she wanted to go back and tell him to just wander around as he pleased.
Zhiwei held her mother's hand and casually strolled around the City God Temple. She didn't forget to tell her mother, "I went to an antique market in New York. There were a lot of Chinese-style items there. I think they were similar to those in the City God Temple, but the prices were much higher. Surprisingly, people were buying them."
Xu Anyi said, "Things are valued for their rarity. With proper packaging and ample storage space, each item will look extraordinary."
"But the City God Temple isn't what it used to be. Every shop there sells pretty much the same stuff, clearly sourced from Yiwu wholesale. Unlike when I was a kid, at least the items in each shop looked a little different."
After crossing the Nine-Bend Bridge, it was probably evening. There weren't many people in the Nanxiang Xiaolongbao shop opposite the Green Wave Corridor, so Xu Anyi took her daughter in and sat down, ordering a few crab roe xiaolongbao and fried tofu vermicelli soup.
When the food arrived, she picked one up and gave it to Zhiwei, saying, "Eat up, this is probably hard to find abroad. The year you graduated, I came to visit you. When I came back, I ate their xiaolongbao at Din Tai Fung in Los Angeles with my friends. They raved about it, so it's normal for me to eat it. Just by looking at all the Mexican chefs in the restaurant, I could tell that the crab roe xiaolongbao was still lacking in quality."
Zhiwei suddenly remembered the crab roe xiaolongbao from the end of last year. She picked up a xiaolongbao her mother handed her, dipped it in ginger and vinegar sauce, and found it was just as delicious and juicy as she remembered. As she ate, she called to her mother, "Mom, you should eat some too."
The mother and daughter happily finished their steamed buns, and it gradually got dark outside. They weren't in a hurry, waiting until it was completely dark and the lanterns at the City God Temple were lit. Although it wasn't yet the Lantern Festival, the lanterns were already decorated, and there were even more people in the evening than in the afternoon. Long queues had already formed on the Nine-Bend Bridge.
After getting home and washing up, she felt a bit sleepy, so she opened her emails to check the assignments from her teachers at school, hoping to catch up on them as soon as possible. Although she wasn't the top student, she needed to make sure she graduated smoothly, no matter what.
Around 9 o'clock, Jingnan called her and told her that Youlin had made arrangements for her mother to be admitted to the 301 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army the next afternoon. She had also bought them tickets for a flight at 10 a.m. the next morning, and she would be going to Beijing with them.
Xu Anyi was stunned when she heard her daughter say that she would be taken to Beijing for a hospital check-up the next day. She had heard her daughter mention before that she would ask someone to make arrangements, but she thought it was just a casual remark and didn't take it seriously. She never expected that it would be arranged the next day.
Thinking back to the driver from that afternoon, she asked her daughter hesitantly, "Weiwei, what kind of friend did you ask to have such great influence?"
The question has finally come to an end. Zhiwei looked at her mother and said, "If I told you that your daughter is exceptionally talented and that a company wants to sign me to a long-term contract, and that these are all employee benefits, would you believe me?"
Xu Anyi pinched her daughter's smooth cheek, "Do you think your mother is an illiterate village woman?"
Zhiwei shrugged and said, "Sounds unbelievable, doesn't it? But that's the truth. Do you not believe your daughter is so outstanding, or do you not believe the company's employee benefits are so good?"
Xu Anyi said, "My daughter is naturally the best in my heart, but capitalists don't do charity. Don't forget, your mother has a background in finance. In the boss's mind, return on investment is the most important thing."
"That means my return on investment is high."
"Weiwei."
"Mom, don't worry. Your daughter doesn't make drugs, doesn't have any extraordinary skills, and can't manipulate things. What could possibly happen? It's a matter of mutual consent. We've already agreed that I've made all the arrangements, and you're coming with me. You can't go back on your word. If you don't trust me, just keep a close eye on me for as long as possible, okay?"
Since Zhiwei returned, the two haven't really talked about the post-surgery situation. From her words, Xu Anyi knew how anxious her daughter was. She knew, of course, that what she said wasn't entirely accurate, but her daughter was an adult. Just as she said, if she couldn't be there for her daughter for a long time, what choice she made today wouldn't make a difference.
She hugged her daughter and stroked her hair. "Mommy will listen to Zhiwei and watch over my Weiwei for a long, long time."
The next morning at eight o'clock, Jingnan was waiting for Zhiwei and Xu Anyi downstairs. She greeted Xu Anyi politely, "Hello, Miss Xu, I'm Jingnan. Please feel free to let me know if you need anything. I'll be with you both during this time."
After arriving in Beijing at noon, they had a quick lunch and went straight to the 301 Hospital. Jingnan had already contacted Youlin beforehand, and when they arrived at the hospital entrance, Youlin, Dr. Li from the International Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and a nurse were already waiting for them.
They quickly completed Xu Anyi's hospitalization procedures, and by the afternoon she was already in her ward waiting for pre-operative preparations. Youlin said apologetically, "The wards are a bit cramped right now, there's only one private room. If you're staying with someone, the caregiver will come to check on you regularly at night. Zhiwei, if you need to stay overnight later, we can ask the caregiver to add a folding bed."
Xu Anyi said very politely, "This couldn't be better. Thank you, Ms. Zhao, and thank you all for your hard work."
After everyone said goodbye, Zhiwei wanted to stay, but Xu Anyi urged her, "I'm not paralyzed, so there's no point in you staying here. Go and get some rest."
Zhiwei didn't make a fuss and left with Jingnan.
