Chapter 16 The Name of the Hero

Chapter 16 The Name of the Hero

On the way back, Zhong Mengfan said to me, "Doctor."

"Um."

"I've figured out an alias for when I become a pro hero."

I asked, "What do you want to call me?"

"His name is Link," Zhong Mengfan explained. "He's the protagonist of a series of games. Each time, the protagonist starts out as a beginner warrior with no experience, slowly grows into a powerful and formidable warrior, defeats the final boss, and rescues the princess."

Zhong Mengfan introduced it in such detail, as if he was worried that there was a huge generation gap between him and me and that I didn't understand who Link was.

I waved my hand. "No need to go into such detail. I've played that game before."

"Oh, what's your favorite movie in the series, Doctor?"

"Breath of the Wild, I hope you can become more and more proficient in using your powers like the protagonist and become a powerful hero."

Zhong Mengfan nodded. "Well, I'll do my best, doctor!"

Taking advantage of his enthusiasm, I continued, "You're confident, which is great. Now that today's Hero Practice mission is over, we're going to start the second training. Your physical fitness is still at an average level, so you need weighted running to increase your strength, endurance, and speed. You'll also need to practice close combat and actual combat. And, of course, the use of firearms and cold weapons. You need to thoroughly and systematically learn all of this."

"Doctor, don't superheroes in TV and movies constantly unleash their superpowers to fight and eliminate their enemies? What you're saying sounds like you're training a special forces soldier."

"Of course, superpowers must be used in the media to show ordinary people the uniqueness and difference of superpowers in the most intuitive and direct way, and to publicize the positive deeds of superheroes fighting criminals. However, criminals are also very smart nowadays. They have developed many methods specifically for dealing with superheroes. The most common one is to create a trap in a specific environment that prevents superpower users from using their powers. If you can't use your superpowers and have no other means of self-protection, facing a criminal who is armed and skilled in fighting, is there any other outcome besides being caught, Link?"

Because we were still wearing masks and combat uniforms, I called him by the new hero nickname that Zhong Mengfan had given himself.

"That's right, Doctor. In my mind, superheroes have always been a group of very cool and mysterious guys. After meeting Mr. Lucky and hearing what you said, I found that I still have a lot to learn."

"Think of it as a lifelong career, Link. Once you're a pro hero, you'll always be one. Besides, even if you're not a pro hero, you still need to keep learning and enrich your knowledge in any other job."

"I will, Doctor."

The rookie Zhong Mengfan’s answers in the Q&A session were so good that they rekindled my hope that he could become a legendary heroic ranger.

but.

Shooting Range

"Bang!" The gunshot rang out, but the accuracy was very poor and completely missed the target.

"Zhong Mengfan, don't hunch your shoulders when you shoot, and don't blink every time you shoot. It's easy to miss the target."

"I'm sorry, doctor. There's recoil when shooting, and I can't control my body's conditioned reflex, and the sound of the gun is very loud." He touched the noise-isolating headphones.

"Then practice more. Keep shooting, don't stop. Until you get used to the way you hold the gun and the sound it makes when you fire it."

"Yes, doctor."

On the treadmill

Zhong Mengfan panted, "Huff, huff, huff... Doctor, can you reduce the weight on me? I feel like I can't run anymore."

"Have you seen the horror movie Red Moon?" I asked.

"...Huhuhu, I've seen it. It's a very famous horror movie. Some of the scenes left a psychological shadow on me..." He shook off the sweat from his hair.

"Then you should remember those plots. When escaping together, the first ones to die are those who run slowly and are left behind. Similar situations also happen in real life. Do you want to be the first one to be left behind?"

"I don't want to, doctor. But my legs are about to break from running! QAQ Woo waaaah!!!" Zhong Mengfan shouted while continuing to run.

I remained unmoved by his screams and wails. "If you can still speak, it means you still have strength. Come on, Zhong Mengfan."

"Doctor! You are a devil!"

"Keep running, don't stop."

“Wuwuwu…”

After finally finishing today's mileage, Zhong Mengfan fell to the ground, gasping for breath, looking like he had no intention of getting up at all.

I told him, "Although this kind of physical training is effective, it's still too slow."

"Too, too slow," Zhong Mengfan said to me with a frustrated look on his face, "but I feel like I'm pushing my limits every day... Like now, I can't stand up anymore..."

I shook my head. "No matter how pitiful you sound, tomorrow's training won't be reduced."

"Doctor, you are stricter than the teachers in school."

"Teachers at school teach you how to learn so you can get into the best universities and find a job. But now you're a pro hero. While ordinary people can quit and look for another job if things don't go their way, pro heroes can make mistakes at work..."

I paused for a moment and then continued in a very serious tone, "You will die."

Looking at Zhong Mengfan, who was still lying on the ground with a dazed look on his face, without much sense of crisis, I sighed slightly. What I said to him now was like what teachers in school say to problem students. How many people can really be persuaded by words?

Superpower Training Ground

"This place looks like a training ground for parkour and rock climbing." Zhong Mengfan said after arriving at the supernatural power training ground.

"The training ground was originally a place for teenagers who had just awakened their superpowers to train their superpowers and physical fitness." As I said this, I took Zhong Mengfan to one of the climbing walls.

"Doctor, are you going to teach me rock climbing today?" Zhong Mengfan stretched his head and looked down at the climbing wall. "Wow, it's so high. Should we use a safety rope or something?"

I said to Zhong Mengfan, "Jump down from here."

"How to dance?" He seemed to have no idea what was being said.

"Just jump. You can also use your own special abilities, like this." After saying that, I jumped down. After landing, I looked up at the place where I jumped just now. Zhong Mengfan was standing there, looking at me, motionless.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

Zhong Mengfan leaned against the wall for support, clearly afraid of falling. He hesitated and said, "That doctor... this place is at least three stories high..."

I raised my eyebrows. "What's the problem?"

"If an ordinary person jumps like this, he might die!" Zhong Mengfan wanted to shout loudly to protest against this "unreasonable request", but because there were some psychics who were obviously younger than him training not far away, he had to speak in a strange tone.

"So what does this have to do with you? Stop using the physical fitness of ordinary people to represent yourself. You already have superpowers. No matter whether the superpowers are strong or weak, your current physical fitness has long surpassed the level of ordinary people." I pressed my forehead with my fingers, not wanting to waste too much time explaining something that is as easy as eating and drinking for people with superpowers.

So, the direct order was "Jump down."

"Huh!!!" Zhong Mengfan uttered a single sound after hearing what I said. He changed his original posture of leaning on the support point to holding the wall with both hands. It seemed that he was even more reluctant to let go.

He completed the previous gun and weighted running exercises just fine, but Zhong Mengfan showed fear of heights and resistance to the first training today. I am a little worried about whether he can adapt to the more difficult training later.

I sighed softly, do I need to be more strict?

With that in mind, I pulled out my communicator and logged into the A-Class Hero work group, which I hadn't logged into in a while. At times like this, perhaps I could ask my more experienced colleagues how they do things.

Me: Is anyone there?

When the master and apprentice are training, the apprentice seems to be afraid of heights. What should I do at this time to help him? When teaching the apprentice, should I be more strict in my tone, or adjust my attitude and be more patient and kind?

Sweetheart Warrior: Oh, it's so rare to see you, Night Demon~ Night Demon's apprentice must be a handsome little cutie like you~ Why hesitate at this time? Of course, I will just kick him down from that high place~~~
