Chapter 80 Why doesn’t it count?
*
The wind blows page after page, and the school is injected with new youthful spirit. Unknowingly, the shadow of senior year of high school is already in the classroom.
At that time, Xu Yucheng was walking towards the playground with a speech in her hand.
Today is the day when the military training for freshmen in the first year of high school ends. She is also the representative of the senior year to welcome every new student.
Standing on the playground of the new semester in September, the sky is blue and the freshmen are standing in neat rows in camouflage uniforms, just like she was two years ago. This is where the youth of young people begins freely.
Until the host's voice came from the stage, "Now let's welcome your senior sister to the stage."
Xu Yucheng walked to the center of the stage amid waves of applause, and took the microphone with grace and calmness.
The applause from the audience grew louder and louder.
Looking at the new faces below, Xu Yucheng couldn't help but think of her freshman year in high school, when Zhou Zhou was standing at the same place as the representative of the senior students.
A smile appeared on the delicate face, and a pleasant voice rang out above the playground.
She walked the same path he walked and did the same things he did.
"...You will begin a new chapter in your lives at No. 1 Middle School and burst forth into a boundless future!"
After he finished speaking, there was warm applause again and again.
The host took the microphone from her and couldn't help but tease, "It seems I'm not worthy. The applause I received was much smaller than that of you seniors."
There was a sudden burst of applause from the audience.
Xu Yucheng smiled and nodded slightly at him, then turned and walked off the stage.
It was class time now. On the way back to the classroom, a few birds flew by, breaking the tranquility of the sky.
The classroom was filled with the sound of reading. As soon as Xu Yucheng sat down, she heard complaints from beside her.
"My throat is about to smoke from reading. It's too hard to live without novels to read." Zheng Yu lay down on the table tiredly.
During the senior year of high school, everyone started to get nervous.
Xu Yucheng moved the warm water in the cup towards her and said, "Drink some water to moisten your throat."
Zheng Yu sat up straight and cast a pitiful look at the people around him with emotion.
There are not many new courses in the third year of high school. It mainly involves review and continuous practice of exercises.
There was nothing else on everyone's desk except for several piles of test papers.
The day passed quietly while I was doing the test papers.
As school was about to end, Zheng Yu leaned back on the table weakly and sighed.
Xu Yucheng looked at her with amusement, "It's time to get out of school and eat."
The people at the table waved their hands and said, "Orange, I have no appetite. You go first."
"Okay then, remember to eat."
After everyone left, Zheng Yu took out his phone and complained silently, "Damn Wu Shuo, why haven't you replied to my message yet? You're such a forgetful and ungrateful guy. You forgot all your close friends as soon as you got to college. Living in a college dormitory is so great, right?"
He poked a certain portrait hard with his finger.
When they were about to reach the school gate, Xu Yucheng's heart suddenly ached. She stopped and paused for a long time. Her pretty eyebrows frowned, so suddenly that she thought it was an illusion.
She found a wonton shop outside the school. When the wontons were placed on the table, she stared at the bowl and became dazed. Only when the person next to her reminded her did she react.
I lost my appetite after eating three wontons.
I got up, paid the bill, walked out, and went back to school for evening self-study.
The sky gradually darkened. Xu Yucheng was not in the right state of mind the whole night. He could not solve a single question on the test paper on the table. People around him reminded him again and again.
It was the first time Zheng Yu saw Chengzi like this. He thought she was sick, so he went to get her some hot water during the break.
After school, he said, "Orange, remember to take your medicine when you get home."
Xu Yucheng also felt strange. She didn't even know when she got on the car. She looked out the window and saw only a few cars on the street. The road looked a little desolate under the light of the street lights.
He took out his cell phone from his pocket and saw the latest message from Zhou Zhou.
[I'm working overtime tonight, Chengcheng, please be careful when you go home]
A smile appeared on her little face and her fingers tapped on the keyboard.
After arriving at the door, he went straight into the house.
Xu Yucheng changed her shoes at the entrance, turned around and walked inside. Seeing the person sitting on the sofa in the living room, she smiled and said, "Dad, I'm back. Where's Mom?"
Unlike usual, this time Mr. Xu did not answer her in a relaxed tone.
He sat quietly on the sofa, as if waiting for her to come back. He looked at his daughter, who was carrying a schoolbag, and slowly uttered a few heavy words, "Chengcheng, your grandpa passed away."
Xu Yucheng froze in place. She opened her mouth but found the words stuck in her throat. After a few seconds, she managed to speak, "Grandpa, isn't he back home?"
Father Xu felt a little reluctant and closed his eyes helplessly. "A neighbor from my hometown called today and said your mother has passed away."
Xu Yucheng's ears suddenly buzzed and she couldn't hear anything. She just sat on the sofa. After a while, her face was surprisingly calm, even her father was surprised. "Then I'll go back to my room to put my schoolbag away, and we'll go over there too."
The moment I stood up after saying that, I realized my legs were numb.
Father Xu watched his daughter leave, picked up his packed things, took the car keys from the drawer and walked out.
Xu Yucheng, who had just walked up the stairs, couldn't hold it in any longer. She leaned against the wall, covered her mouth with her hands and cried silently.
She had clearly been in contact with her grandfather a few days ago, and her grandfather had shown her the flowers and plants growing beautifully in the yard. They had agreed to go back after the National Day holiday, and they had also agreed to set off fireworks together during the Chinese New Year next year.
How come none of it counts?
After adjusting her mood, Xu Yucheng walked back to her room and took out a few clothes from the closet. While packing, tears kept falling.
When she got in the car, she suppressed the sour feeling rising in her throat and said softly, "What about grandma?"
Father Xu slowly explained to her, "When your grandmother heard the news of her passing, she couldn't accept it and passed out."
When Xu Yucheng heard this, her heart suddenly tightened, and another voice came from the front.
"You're awake now, and your mother is with you."
She turned her head to the window, tilted her head back, and tried hard not to let her tears fall. It turned out that one can really feel the death of a loved one.
The car slowly drove towards the deserted street, and the night was quiet and silent.
By the time we got home, it was already late at night.
After parking the car, Mr. Xu looked at his daughter with some concern. After a moment, he said, "Go in and take a look."
After getting off the car, Xu Yucheng looked at the brightly lit courtyard in front of her. People were constantly coming in and out, which was out of place with the surrounding darkness.
She didn't know what kind of mood she was in as she stepped into the door. The red spring couplets were no longer on the door, but had been replaced with white paper.
There were many people in the yard and no one noticed Xu Yucheng in the corner.
Her eyes fell on the flowers and plants that were her grandfather's most precious treasure, and tears silently wet her cheeks.
I heard someone talking next to my ears.
"I saw him yesterday and he was fine. How come he's gone all of a sudden?"
"I heard someone say he fell. The old man already had high blood pressure, and the fall killed him."
“What a pity.”
Xu Yucheng's mind was on the previous Chinese New Year. Grandpa obviously had high blood pressure, but he insisted on hiding and drinking that sip of wine, like a little old man. He obviously wanted to eat braised prawns, but told grandma that my granddaughter wanted to eat it.
How could that usually cheerful and optimistic old man suddenly pass away?
Xu Yucheng stood outside the house and saw through the window that her mother was staying with her grandmother inside.
She stopped where she was, unable to move forward. She didn't have the courage to go in.
After standing there for half an hour, she turned and walked out.
Mr. Xu was always paying attention to his daughter and took out his cell phone to open the address book.
