Most of the time, Grandpa didn't have this kind of sense of humor. He only showed this kind of smile in front of his little granddaughter, Ouyang.
Zhuo Qiang went downstairs in the room and was caught by his mother and brought into the room. She said she wanted to talk to him about his father's health.
"Zhuo Qiang," his mother said earnestly, "Your father's health isn't particularly good either. He often suffers from insomnia at night."
"I'll ask the doctor to come home later and give him a thorough checkup." Zhuo Qiang seldom cared about their physical condition. On the one hand, it was because his mother was a capable woman who always handled all the family affairs very thoughtfully by herself; on the other hand, it was because his father did not like anyone other than his mother to know about his physical condition.
"We have a family doctor," said the mother, "so you don't need to worry too much about us two old people. Your father and I have discussed this before. Although you didn't leave any children for our Zhuo family, we have this little girl, Ouyang, who is much more sensible than you."
"Ouyang is quite good," Zhuo Qiang agreed with his mother. "Although she's not my biological daughter, she's not much different from one. From now on, just treat her as a child of the Zhuo family."
"That's right," the grandmother smiled. She used to worry about her son's other ideas, but now she felt relieved. "Didn't you say you wanted to go back yesterday? I asked Auntie to prepare some more New Year's goods for you. You can't have a simple New Year's celebration over there."
Zhuo Qiang felt that his mother was a considerate person. No matter what he did outside, when he returned to her, he was just a child who needed care.
At this time, an old man and a child who had just returned from playing in the snow saw the mother and child standing in the restaurant. The grandfather coughed, "Ahem!" as if to announce his arrival.
After a simple breakfast, the family returned to their respective tasks. Grandma and Auntie went out to buy New Year's goods. Grandpa was in his study, writing couplets. Every day, he would write several, then select the best ones. Zhuo Qiang returned to the company, busy listening to the company's annual report. Ouyang went to Mu Jiang's school. They had a day off today, so she had to take him out for a walk.
What she didn't expect was that Mu Jiang performed quite well in school. His grades were not too good, but not the worst either.
In order to reward him for his hard work throughout the semester, Ouyang decided to fulfill all his wishes today.
Mu Jiang was naturally delighted and took her straight to the supermarket. She didn't know where he'd gotten the list of family members, but it included his godmother, godfather, Jin Lu and Xia Yue, as well as distant relatives from his grandfather's side. She was reluctant to call Mu Jiang's grandfather her maternal grandfather, because aside from his name, she had never remembered him in any way.
Behind him, Ouyang was pushing a large pile of things. It looked like they were all for his family, and he probably had some for his friends as well. Mu Jiang loved tech products, and he always wanted to research any new gadgets.
Seeing how much he enjoyed mechanics, Ouyang suggested that he learn how to build robots. However, he was reluctant: "I want to be a policeman in the future."
His answer surprised her a little. After all, no one in his family was engaged in such an industry, and no one had guided him. So why did he want to become a police officer?
"I didn't expect you to be a policeman." She really didn't expect that. If she had known earlier, she would not have sent him to an international school.
"What? Are you surprised?" Mu Jiang asked when he saw her say that.
"Not really," the two walked side by side, "I just didn't expect it." His father was a technician, so he must have been influenced a lot since he was a child.
"I just decided recently," he said, grabbing some snacks from the shelf. "Actually, I don't really care what I make."
"A person should have his or her own will when making any choice," she said, "as long as you think it is right and you don't regret it, then do it." She didn't understand family education, and she was only willing to treat Mu Jiang, her brother who was related to her by blood, as an equal.
As they spoke, their two carts were already packed to the brim. They exchanged a glance, looking like people shopping for New Year's goods. Even when they were checking out, the cashier gave them a few extra glances.
The weather was beautiful on the day they returned to Chongqing. On that sunny morning, Zhuo Qiang and Mu Jiang met. Unlike the expected cold reception, they exchanged greetings. That day, Zhuo Qiang and Mu Jiang acted like perfect gentlemen, neither of them causing Ouyang any worry.
The two gentlemen carried all the luggage. Even when they entered Wang Yao's godmother's house, Ouyang had never touched those heavy things.
There were a lot of people that night, and my godmother and godfather were very happy. They were busy in the kitchen. That's just how they are. No matter how tired they are, they like to do it themselves. It gives them an incomparable sense of accomplishment.
Jin Lu and Xia Yue had already lived at home for two days. Under their mother's arrangement, they had already cleaned up the Ouyang family's house so that the three of them could stay there at night.
During the meal, Wang Yao drank some wine and kept talking to Zhuo Qiang about the past. Their topics always revolved around Ouyang's mother, and of course some people who had long since passed away.
Mu Jiang listened carefully. He thought these were the history of the previous generation, and those stories contained some indescribable emotions.
Xia Yu's godfather simply catered to them, occasionally offering his own opinions. He was like his wife's eternal audience. No matter how many times he had heard something Wang Yao said, he always listened attentively as if it were the first time, and his opinions became more and more insightful as time went by.
