Chapter 8 Little Assistant

"This Lu Yang, he really has some skills." Mu Zishan said in a bad mood. She looked at the bulletin board and didn't expect Lu Yang to be good at computers. She remembered her brother said that now is the age of computers, and the future will be even more so. Individuals cannot live without computers, society cannot live without computers, and even the country cannot live without computers. Sherlock Holmes has Watson, Conan has Xiaolan, and she should also find a partner. She knew that he looked very smart and helped her a lot. So she took the clothes for Lu Yang and went to the first class.

There were fewer people in Class 1, so she saw him working on his homework and called him. He saw Mu Zishan at the door and walked out: "Are you returning your clothes now?" He took the bag from her, turned back, and signaled to the classmates to stop making trouble.

"I have something to talk to you about!"

"Wait a minute!" He handed the bag to his classmate and took her to the rooftop.

It was her first time on the rooftop, and she directly stated her purpose, which made him laugh. "Haha, you?" He looked at her in disbelief, "Sherlock Holmes?"

Mu Zishan's scalp tingled: "I was just using a metaphor. As long as you are willing to be my assistant, I can provide all the software or hardware you want!" Dad used to buy computer software for my brother every day, and now his entire room can be regarded as a small converter.

Lu Yang's eyes were bright, and he sat on a chair beside him: "I don't care about what you said this time, unless you can provide me with a room!"

She leaned on the railing, feeling the wind blowing up from below, and replied, "No problem, I happen to have a basement at home."

He chuckled and said, "I didn't expect that besides being good-looking, you also have the virtue of being helpful."

In a recent exam, she ranked third from the bottom in the class. The student who ranked last didn't even take the exam, and the student who ranked second from the bottom was a girl. It was said that she had a stomachache during the math test and only finished half of the paper. She had never dared to tell her brother about this, fearing that he would lecture her with useless theories again. As for having Lu Yang move into the basement, she decided not to ask his opinion.

Their basement had two doors, one leading to the kitchen and the other to the back garden, which meant that no one except her would discover the secret of the basement.

On Lu Yang's first day, several taxis were loaded with computers and other equipment. His parents had always been against his computer career and had thrown all his stuff into a storage room.

She doesn't know anything about computers, but hers looks pretty much the same as my brother's. It has everything, including more than a dozen monitors. Luckily, our basement is big enough to fit everything in, plus there's room for a coffee table and a sofa. They even added a bathroom when they designed it, so it's pretty good.

He was quite satisfied with the place and lay on the sofa with his eyes closed.

"Here are the keys." She placed them on the coffee table.

"Are your parents not at home?" He softened his eyes with effort.

"They are divorced," she shrugged. "There are only me and my brother at home. He is very busy and is not at home much." He has been attending some lecture recently.

"Oh," he said, not caring about it. "Do you have a blanket? I want to stay here for a few days."

She went upstairs to get a pillow and quilt, and asked him to go upstairs to eat.

She was home alone, so she made pork rib soup, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, shredded potatoes, and two bowls of rice. She only took two pieces of meat, and he ate the rest.

A few days after her brother returned home, she almost forgot about the basement. It wasn't until the second day of the Lunar New Year, when her brother said he'd be living out for the time being, that she went to check it out. The computers were all running, and he was playing games. The basement, with its heated floor, felt just as good as the one upstairs. "You didn't come home last night?"

"Some people are coming to the house and it's too noisy. What's going on?" He took off his headphones and turned his chair to look at her.

She turned around and said: "Wang Yao asked me to go shopping. Do you need anything to bring?" In the new year, she always gave some gifts to her family and friends.

He got up and sat on the sofa, stretching himself: "Let's go together."

Because of the traffic jam, Wang Yao arrived half an hour later than the agreed time. The two of them arrived at the entrance of the shopping mall first. The air was cold and humid, and the exhaled breath was immediately covered with 10% water droplets.

Wang Yao was very surprised when she saw Lu Yang. She hid behind her and asked, "When did you two get together?"

Mu Zishan widened his eyes and corrected her words: "We are not together, we are just friends."

"Haha," Wang Yao put his arm around her waist, "It's been a long time since we last met. Just kidding, what's your relationship?"

Mu Zishan looked at him and said, "My friend, he did me a favor, and then I let him live in the basement of my house."

"So, you two are pretty familiar with each other now!" Wang Yao looked at him, nodded politely, and whispered in her ear, "Does he like you?"

Mu Zishan completely ignored her words and walked into the mall.

There were a lot of people in the mall. Wang Yao was a shopaholic, and she happened to have Lu Yang as her advisor, so of course she wouldn't miss such a good opportunity.

Mu Zishan bought three identical red scarves, one for each of them, as New Year's gifts. Lu Yang followed them, carrying things and simply nodding or shaking his head.

Tired of shopping, they sat down in the upstairs restaurant. Wang Yao, with her head drooping, looked at the children running around outside and said, "Yesterday, our neighbor's child went missing. They say he was abducted by human traffickers and might have been sold into the mountains."

"This is too outrageous! Have you called the police?" Mu Zishan was filled with indignation.

"Even if I report it, the police won't be able to do anything. More and more people are losing their children during the Chinese New Year." Wang Yao said calmly. This is the reality. As long as it doesn't happen to her, it won't matter.

Mu Zishan and Lu Yang looked at each other, and he crossed his legs: "Don't look at me, I can't do anything." She decided to follow Wang Yao to see her neighbor.

Wang Yao’s neighbors are an elderly couple. The child’s parents are working outside and will not be able to come back for a few days. They are flipping through the photos of their granddaughter, and the elderly couple are shedding dry tears.

Lu Yang followed Mu Zishan. Before getting in the car to go home, he pulled her back and said, "Are you looking for that child?"

"Can you bear to see them so sad?" Mu Zishan got on the bus and sat in the last row.

"This kind of thing is done by the police," he sat next to her, and seeing that she ignored him, he continued, "Forget it, how can I help you?"

Mu Zishan had been tired of staying at home for so long, and this move was half out of sympathy and half out of passion. She analyzed the two elderly people's descriptions, and Wang Yao took them to the community's surveillance room. After their request to retrieve the surveillance footage was rejected, they decided to take action at night.

At night, Wang Yao, posing as the owner, distracted the on-duty personnel while Lu Yang sneaked into the monitoring room to obtain data. She guarded the door until they were safely out, then found a secluded spot where the three of them reviewed the day's surveillance data together.
