Chapter 86: Back, Goodbye

The four children sat in the yard, and Ouyang Zishan and his two brothers told them everything that happened here, including how they became friends with Da Niu.

Xia Yue looked around. He couldn't understand how Ouyang Zishan could stay here for several months and never called them to complain during these months.

Jin Lu put the phone he brought from home into her bag and whispered to her, "This time, mom and I came here to take you back home."

"When are we leaving?" she asked. "Grandma's family is about to harvest the grain, and I have to stay and help them."

Jin Lu looked at the yellowing rice in the distance and said, "I'll talk to my parents later."

In fact, the godmother and godfather were not in a hurry to leave, because they had brought two tents, just enough for the whole family to stay in. Grandma said that she couldn't bear to leave Ouyang Zishan, she was a filial child and thought about her grandmother in everything.

Wang Yao hadn't expected Ouyang Zishan to change so much, it had already exceeded her initial expectations. Although she was no longer a family, she still preferred to sleep with her grandmother. Her godparents slept on the second floor, and the three boys slept in the tent outside.

Harvesting rice is a very troublesome task. Under the leadership of Xiaowei, the family worked for two days before they harvested all the rice.

After observing her for a few days, Ouyang Zishan not only learned to care for others, but also to exchange her labor for rewards. Her godfather followed her to the mountains to pick mushrooms, and she insisted on picking more so she could sell some to buy some chickens. Her godmother helped with the cooking while the three boys fished in the fields.

The godfather followed Ouyang Zishan as they went to the town to sell the freshly picked mushrooms. Almost everyone there knew Ouyang Zishan, and many of the locals called her a beautiful girl. The godfather followed her and asked, "Why don't you buy them here like they do?"

“Oh, there’s an auntie who particularly likes mushrooms from the mountains,” she explained, “and she pays the highest price for them.”

The godfather smiled slightly. Ouyang Zishan, who used to only know how to spend money, now knows how to make money.

She bought some money, first bought two chicks, and then went to buy a few pairs of gloves.

"Who are the gloves for?" asked godfather.

"It's for grandma," she said. "Grandma's eyesight is bad, and she always pricks her hands when she picks up firewood."

"What about Xiao Wei?"

"What he has are some that grandma made for him using some old sweaters."

The two of them walked back and passed by the school on the way. Ouyang Zishan introduced the two ping-pong tables to his godfather: "I designed them. They are very sturdy."

The godfather touched her head and said, this child has finally grown up and can do these meaningful things on her own.

"Godfather," she pointed to the vegetable and fruit garden in the distance, "The food here is all green organic food, very delicious."

"Really? When you get back, Godfather will also plan a vegetable garden for you to grow."

"That would be wonderful."

Perhaps for him, this kind of pastoral life is what he once longed for. Without any external interference, he can just do his own research, plant crops and watch the clouds when he has nothing to do.

The two of them returned home just in time for lunch. Ouyang Zishan placed the remaining mushrooms, which did not look very good, on the Boji Mountain and left them to be exposed to the sun.

The three brothers also had a bountiful harvest and cooked a large table of fish. Grandma said that the fish in the fields were a gift from God and therefore the most delicious, so she asked them to eat more.

A few days later, the rice was dried and all the farm work was done. Wang Yao told her grandmother that she was going back, so her grandmother made Ouyang Zishan her favorite scrambled eggs.

Godmother said that they had no way to help grandma's family, so they could only thank them in the most vulgar way by giving them some money. If they were willing, the money was enough for them to buy a house in town and enjoy life there peacefully.

But the grandmother was unwilling to do so. She said that she had lived here since she married Xiaowei's grandfather and she did not want to leave. She only hoped that the money would allow Xiaowei to go to a good university and eventually bring his father home.

On the day she left, all her friends came to see her off. Although she didn't know when she would see them again, she was still looking forward to reminiscing about these beautiful times with them.

Xia Yue was one of the kids who liked the place. He felt like they knew nothing and lived the same old life every day. "Ouyang, how did you become friends with them?"

"Why can't we be friends with them?" Ouyang Zishan asked him, "What do you think constitutes friendship?"

"They don't understand you at all. They can do nothing but help you with your work."

"I don't want to hear you evaluate them like this." Ouyang Zishan walked in front with some anger.

Jin Lu said to his brother, "Don't mess with her. After all, she's only been living here for a few months."

"I'm just telling the truth," Xia Yue pouted, "Why is she angry?"

In fact, Ouyang Zishan could also feel that the moment she left the mountain village, she had severed her relationship with it. She and her friends here would only become memories of the past, and would no longer be good friends like before.

The godmother walked beside her, holding her shoulders and said, "Child, you always have to grow up. When you grow up, the world around you will change. But no matter how the outside world changes, your family will never change."

"Thank you, godmother."

The godfather stood by his two sons and told them, "Mom and sister are the ones we need to care for and protect, not our enemies. So instead of making them unhappy, we might as well change our mindset and accept all their little tempers."
