Chapter 786 A Siege with No Way Out

Gu Siting looked at Ling Yan who was speaking, and after a long silence, he said.

"You can leave now."

Ling Yan left the study, and her legs went weak the moment she stepped out the door.

When Madam Gu learned that Gu Siting had returned, she rushed home and saw Ling Yan standing at the door of the study, her face pale.

"What’s wrong with you?"

Ling Yan snapped out of her daze and shook her head.

"It's nothing, I'm just feeling a little unwell. I'll be fine after resting in my room."

After saying that, he leaned against the wall and left the study.

Madam Gu watched her retreating figure until she pushed open the study door and went inside.

Inside the study, Gu Siting was carefully wiping the porcelain cup he had brought back, unaware that someone had entered.

Madam Gu stood in front of the desk for a while before speaking.

"Kuroda said those were things Vivi left in Shengxi City?"

Gu Siting gently put it down. "It was a birthday present she prepared for me that year."

Madam Gu sat down and asked.

"Mrs. Ling said that you proposed to dissolve your engagement with Ling Yan?"

"Yes," Gu Siting admitted.

Madam Gu sighed and said.

"Si Ting, why do you always act so self-centeredly? You treated Weiwei like this before, and you're treating Ling Yan like this now. You were the one who agreed to get engaged to her, and now you're the one who wants to break off the engagement."

“You’re right. Even if she received Weiwei’s heart, she’s not herself, and she doesn’t resemble her at all,” Gu Siting said calmly.

Madam Gu was somewhat angry at her son's stubbornness and arrogance. "When you agreed to the engagement, I reminded you, but you insisted on getting engaged. Now you want to break off the engagement. How come you can never learn to think about others?"

Gu Siting gently stroked the porcelain cup, his tone indifferent.

"You don't like her either, so this is just right."

“Si Ting, this isn’t her problem, it’s yours.” Madam Gu sighed heavily and said, “Back then, because of your father’s situation, you distanced yourself from Weiwei and got together with Ling Yan. You didn’t think about Weiwei, nor did you think about Ling Yan. You only thought about yourself from beginning to end.”

"Is that so?" Gu Siting laughed self-deprecatingly, without refuting Madam Gu's accusations.

“Back then, Weiwei knew nothing, yet you distanced yourself from her. She never understood, kept coming to ask me, and tried every possible way to talk to you clearly, but you refused to see her, and you even got together with Ling Yan,” Madam Gu said.

Gu Siting stroked the porcelain cup in his hands and said dejectedly.

"Mother, do you know how painful it is for me to try so hard to forget her and let her go, but I still can't let her go?"

She knew nothing, while he knew everything.

He couldn't hate her, nor could he love her; day by day, he felt like he was falling into a walled city with no way out.

Madam Gu fell silent in surprise. She felt sorry for Weiwei at that time, but forgot that he was the one who suffered the most.

"Don't you have any feelings for Ling Yan at all?"

If there's no affection involved, what about Ling Yan's child from back then?

"No," Gu Siting answered without the slightest hesitation.

He tried very hard to forget Weiwei and fall in love with Lingyan, but he failed.

"If the person who gave you the Nine-Eyed Dzi Bead hadn't appeared, and Weiwei was long gone, what would you have done?" Madam Gu asked.

Gu Siting raised his eyes and looked steadily at Madam Gu, "He will appear, and Weiwei will definitely come back."

"..." Madam Gu remained silent.

She also hoped that his wish would come true, that Vivi would come back and save him from this quagmire of despair.

However, he never expected that finding her would plunge him into another abyss of despair from which he could never escape.
