Chapter Eighteen Twins
Whether it was truly as she thought, fate had changed, and so had her birth. Originally scheduled for February 24th, it had been delayed, keeping Su Xiangdong on edge. The doctor said she could give birth at any moment, making him uneasy even while at work.
On February 28th, she suddenly started bleeding in the evening. Her aunt quickly sent someone to inform Su Xiangdong, but she wasn't in a hurry. She washed her hair at home before being taken to the hospital.
There was no epidural during this period, and cesarean sections were very rare. She was carrying twins, which increased the risk of a difficult delivery. Su Xiangdong had already made arrangements beforehand, managing to bring the head of obstetrics back after work.
"Don't worry," the doctor said with a smile after the examination. "The baby's position is normal, and her pelvis is in excellent condition. I won't leave tonight, but I estimate she won't give birth until tomorrow morning at the earliest."
"Pain all night?" Su Xiangdong's eyes widened; he simply couldn't believe it. "Isn't there any way to get it to go faster?"
The head nurse and the nurse both laughed. "Station Chief Su, this is the first time I've seen you dote on your wife like this. But there's nothing we can do; that's how it is when women give birth."
Su Xiangdong's brows were furrowed in worry; even the doctors couldn't help him, and he felt helpless. He stayed with his wife all night, watching her toss and turn in agony, tears streaming down her face as she suffered the most.
"I'll only have this one child, and I won't have any more."
Shu Yao's contractions subsided, and she took a deep breath. Her aunt had gone back to make soup and cook for her, leaving just the two of them alone.
"Don't you feel regretful?"
"Is there anything you regret?" He realized what she meant after a moment's thought. His gaze fell on her stomach, and he gently touched it.
"Sweetie, come out quickly, don't bother Mommy. Daddy will come with you, make you something delicious, and take you to play."
He answered her with these words: "These two in your belly are my own children. I'm not just saying it; I truly believe it." He took care of her from the very beginning of her pregnancy, and later interacted with the babies, doing prenatal education. He genuinely felt that these were his children.
After a restless night, he was wheeled into the delivery room just before dawn. He waited anxiously outside until the nurse came out carrying the baby.
"The family members in bed three are twins, a boy and a girl."
He and his aunt rushed forward, and his aunt and cousin, who had come to help, each took one of the children. He then anxiously asked, "Where's my wife?"
"Mother and baby are safe and sound, they'll be out soon, don't worry."
"Thank you, thank you."
Auntie was happily watching the babies. After taking care of Mom for so long, she was overjoyed to see the two darlings. The nurse just said the girl weighed 4.9 pounds and the boy 4.6 pounds, both very healthy.
Shu Yao breathed a sigh of relief upon learning her child's weight; it was more than a pound heavier than in her previous life. The doctor said the child's swallowing and sucking functions were normal, and his cardiopulmonary function was also well-developed. Although the weight wasn't high, it wasn't low either. Newborns at this age don't usually weigh very much; around five pounds is considered excellent.
"Both you and the baby are doing very well. Station Chief Su is quite good at taking care of people," the director said with a smile, having successfully delivered the placenta and preparing to wheel her back to her ward. Normally, she would have just smiled and let it go, but today she actually spoke up.
"Yes, he's fine."
"The young couple has a really good relationship."
Seeing her safe and sound, Su Xiangdong finally breathed a sigh of relief. She fell asleep in the ward, exhausted, and he then took a look at the two babies. The little ones were still small and hadn't fully developed yet, but he thought they were incredibly cute and adorable.
I learned from my aunt how to change diapers and feed the babies. The two little ones were very well-behaved; Shuyao woke up from a nap when it was almost dark, and she wasn't disturbed at all.
"Awake?" Su Xiangdong came over and helped her up. "I made chicken soup, scallion pancakes, and noodles. If you want noodles, I'll make them for you right now. There's a stove downstairs."
"Hmm, I want to eat noodles."
"Okay, you wait."
Auntie San came in after washing the diapers and overheard their conversation. "You stay with her, I'll go cook."
He first served her a bowl of chicken soup with some chicken thigh meat in it. Then she ate most of a bowl of noodles, and he cleaned up the rest.
She was able to go home the day after giving birth naturally. Her aunt had made the house warm and cozy. Everyone congratulated them on their return.
"Twins, a boy and a girl, what a blessing! But premature babies need to be raised very well."
"Yes. It looks so small, I don't even dare to hold it."
Su Xiangdong beamed, his face radiating the joy of becoming a father for the first time. Seeing him so happy, Sun Yaozu, hiding behind the doorway, was completely bewildered. It was only five days since their last meeting, and they were twins again, a boy and a girl. Why was he so happy? What was going on?
Could these two children really be Su Xiangdong's?
