Caught off guard, Jin Mudan bumped her forehead on the corner of the table, instantly swelling up into a large bump.
"Princess!"
The palace maids and guards outside rushed in.
"I'm fine."
But she couldn't help feeling a little wronged. Although Mo Lingchen didn't know she was Jin Mudan, being treated so roughly and feeling a clear pain in her forehead were her true feelings.
"The prince consort has gone too far! How dare he lay a hand on the princess?"
"This old servant will go to the palace to inform Consort Jing and ask Her Highness to make a decision for you."
Chu Qinghe's wet nurse couldn't bear to look at her anymore; seeing the bump on her forehead, she felt extremely distressed.
"Nanny, don't go."
"My mother has been troubled by many things lately, so please don't bother her with this trivial matter."
"The prince consort did not do it on purpose; I, the princess, fell by accident."
The wet nurse was still dissatisfied: "Even if the princess fell on her own, the prince consort cannot ignore it."
"Does the princess just allow her servants to sow discord like this?" Mo Lingchen's cold voice rang out from the doorway.
The wet nurse trembled with fright. The eldest son of the Prime Minister's family was not someone a servant could casually talk about.
Jin Mudan didn't expect Mo Lingchen to return, especially with a medicine box in his hand.
"Get out of here," the man commanded.
The servants dared not disobey. Mo Lingchen personally applied the medicine to her, then carried the woman back to the bedroom.
As Jin Mudan watched him about to leave, she grabbed the man's sleeve and pleaded pitifully, "Can you stay with me tonight?"
"Um."
The man nodded indifferently, then added, "I'll go get you some candied fruit."
Jin Mudan's face turned pale; the candied fruit had been soaked in a deadly poison.
Chu Qinghe loved sweets, so Mo Lingchen would personally coax her into eating a candied fruit every night, thus poisoning her over a long period of time.
She clung to the man's sleeve, refusing to let go: "I don't want to eat tonight."
"obedient."
Mo Lingchen pushed away her hand that was tightly gripping his sleeve and left indifferently.
When the man returned, he had a delicate little jar in his hand, from which he poured out a crystal-clear, brightly colored candied fruit.
He personally fed the candied fruit to the woman's lips, and Jin Mudan's face turned pale again.
She can't eat anymore; it will hasten her death.
Jiaojiao said that if Mo Lingchen continued to poison her, she might not even live for three months.
She didn't want to die so soon; she hadn't lived enough!
Jin Mudan turned her face away, clearly refusing: "I don't want to eat."
"I don't want to eat it anymore."
Mo Lingchen's expression remained unchanged, but his voice softened considerably: "Why are you suddenly acting like a child?"
"Isn't this your favorite candied fruit? And you said you can't sleep without something sweet at night?"
"I don't want to eat."
The man didn't give up: "Do you want me to feed you?"
As he spoke, he actually put the candied fruit in his own mouth and then brought it to her lips.
Startled, Jin Mudan slapped the candied fruit out of his mouth, her face contorted with rage. She growled, "Are you insane? You'd rather die than poison me?"
Mo Lingchen's face turned pale, and he stared at her in astonishment, thinking he had misheard.
"What did you say?"
"Who's talking nonsense to you?"
Jin Mudan simply laid her cards on the table, lest he stop feeding her candied fruit and switch to other methods of poisoning, making it impossible to guard against.
"When Su Yujiao was treating my gynecological disease, she diagnosed that I was poisoned and there was no cure."
She said this was my karma.
"After thinking about it, I realized the problem can only be with this candied fruit."
“I know you hate me, and you’ve always wanted to kill me to avenge Jin Mudan.”
Mo Lingchen's face turned pale, and he felt a moment of panic. He didn't know how to face the situation next.
Poisoning the princess is a crime punishable by the extermination of nine generations of one's family!
He had planned to destroy all the candied fruit in a few days.
Anyway, Chu Qinghe was beyond redemption by then, and no one could trace it back to him!
The man's expression suddenly changed: "I will take full responsibility for my actions. Whether you want to kill me or torture me is entirely up to you, Princess."
Jin Mudan sat on the bed looking at him, her tone calm: "I won't kill you, because even if I did, it wouldn't change my incurable fate."
"I just want you to stop poisoning me in the future."
"I don't blame you, and I won't implicate your family, nor will I let anyone know that you poisoned me."
"I just hope that in the next six months, you can spend more time with me and be an ordinary couple with me."
Mo Lingchen suddenly looked up, staring at her in astonishment, his gaze complex.
He had considered many possibilities, but he never imagined she would react this way or say these things.
How is that possible?
Why would she do this?
He was about to kill her, and she... didn't blame him?
Is she playing some kind of trick?
But... is it necessary?
She was a princess, high and mighty; to kill him was just a matter of a word from her.
He simply couldn't understand what she was thinking!
What exactly do you want?
"This isn't like you!"
"Not just you, no one would be so calm in the face of something like this."
Jin Mudan smiled helplessly: "What else can we do but be calm?"
"If I kill you, will I live?"
"There's nothing I can change now except accept it."
"Now that you've accepted it, do something you want to do."
"All I want now is to be with you, to be a loving couple."
Mo Lingchen kept his eyes fixed on hers, and her gaze was sincere and gentle, without a trace of pretense.
