Chapter 330: The Lighthouse Moves (Part 2)

Charles looked at the trembling man before him, his face so dark it seemed to drip water, and coldly questioned, "Why are you so flustered? What happened?"

Just then, Jingnan's voice came from the communications room: "That large life energy that came out of Ningchuan City is heading towards our Lighthouse. Although we don't know its purpose or intentions, I think we need to make preparations as soon as possible."

Upon hearing the sound, Charles walked right past the communications department employee kneeling on the ground and strode towards the huge floor-to-ceiling window.

He stood there, gazing silently out the window.

The outside world was pitch black, with only endless darkness and silence.

However, Charles's gaze was so deep that it seemed to pierce through the darkness and see the giant rushing towards him.

After a long silence, Charles finally spoke slowly: "That guy wants to absorb the life essence of everyone on our lighthouse!"

His words were like a bombshell, plunging the entire room into a deathly silence.

All eyes turned to him.

This includes the communications department employees who are currently working in front of the machines.

Jingnan asked, "Do you know what it is?"

Charles took a deep breath and slowly said, "That old bastard Morgan told me something before he died. There is something terrifying beneath the whirlpool in Ningchuan City. Once that thing is revived, it will bring a devastating disaster. Even the Lighthouse might not be able to stop it!"

Jingnan frowned, looked at Charles, and asked, "What is it?"

Charles left the French windows and casually sat down in Jingnan's chair. Leaning back, he crossed his legs, hummed softly, and said, "Morgan said it was a giant that was dug out from deep underground by a group of fanatical scientists before the collapse of civilization. It is said to be the oldest known life form on Earth, and some even say it is Earth's...god."

"A god?" Jing Nan scoffed, "I think it's a demon god!"

Charles sneered and continued, "None of that matters. The most important thing is that the giant wasn't inanimate; it had been in a dormant state all along... Back then, in order to find the origin of life and the secret of immortality from that giant, humanity conducted numerous experiments. Among them, the Soul-Eating Beast was a product of those experiments!"

Upon hearing this, Jingnan frowned.

When Vatican stood behind Charles and heard this, the half of his face that was exposed changed slightly.

The look in his eyes toward Charles held a strange glint.

Charles looked out the window, a hint of coldness flashing in his eyes, and continued, "Just like Captain Mark back then..."

Then, he looked at Jingnan, a slight smile playing on his lips, and emphasized, "Mark, the captain of the hunting team that you were all willing to follow to the death should have become the city lord. You shouldn't have forgotten that, right?"

Upon hearing this, Jing Nan paused for a moment, then looked at the smile on Charles's face, his expression growing increasingly cold and stern. He questioned, "Since you know all this, why did you still conduct that kind of experiment?"

Charles seemed to sense something was amiss behind him, but he didn't turn around to look, and remained silent without answering.

However, Vatican, who was standing behind him, had already turned around and looked at the crowd of onlookers in the communications room, and shouted sternly, "Everyone out!"

As Charles's close attendant, Vatican holds the highest legal authority over the Lighthouse.

Her authority was no less than Charles'.

Normally, her words also represent the authority of the Lighthouse Lord.

No one dared to disobey her orders.

Because those who disobeyed have long since vanished without a trace.

No sooner had Vatican's voice rang out than the members of the Communications Department's Lighthouse, who had been staring wide-eyed at the spectacle, fled as if their lives depended on it.

They dared not linger for even the slightest moment.

Charles was neither surprised nor angry by Jingnan's words. Instead, he asked with unusual calm, "You knew all along?"

"If you don't want others to know, then don't do it in the first place. That's the lesson my father taught us from a young age!"

Jing Nan said coldly, a hint of disappointment flashing in his eyes.

Charles sat up straight, placed his hands on the armrests, clenched them gently, and stared intently at Jingnan.

After a long while, he slowly loosened his clenched hands, and finally sighed softly, his tone tinged with helplessness, saying, "Everything I've done is for the lighthouse, for the future of humanity, so that everyone can leave the lighthouse and return to the ground."

After hearing this, Jing Nan snorted coldly, not entirely believing his explanation.

More precisely, she never trusted Charles.

"Are you saving the lighthouse or destroying it by doing this?"

Jing Nan said coldly.

Charles stood up and walked to the French windows, his gaze once again falling on the cold darkness outside, and his shadow cast on the glass.

His voice was deep and firm, tinged with a hint of helplessness and determination, as he said, "The victor is king, the loser is villain; merit and demerit, right and wrong, will be judged by posterity!"

His silhouette, at this moment, appeared somewhat lonely and desolate, evoking pity in one's heart.

Jingnan stood aside, quietly watching Charles.

She tried to open her mouth, but ultimately chose to remain silent.

“Vatican…”

Charles suddenly turned around, his eyes sharp as knives, and called out in a deep voice.

"City Lord!"

Vatican's heart tightened, and he quickly stepped forward, respectfully responding, then awaiting Charles's next instructions.

"Notify the Lighthouse City Defense Force to activate the Lighthouse's backup power. This time, we will take the initiative..."

Charles's tone was unusually stern, and every word struck Jingnan's heart like a heavy hammer.

Jingnan stared wide-eyed at Charles in disbelief, exclaiming in a trembling voice, "Are you crazy?"

The lighthouse's backup power source can only be activated in the most extreme and critical situations.

Today, the lighthouse is still thousands of miles away from Ningchuan City.

If the lighthouse were to rashly use its backup power source, even if it were to reach its destination, the energy stored in the lighthouse would be completely depleted.

At that time, this last refuge of humanity will lose its ability to float in the air and fall into an unprecedented crisis.

It could even lead to the complete extinction of the last humans on Earth.

"You want to take everyone with you to die?"

Jingnan questioned in a cold voice.
