Chapter 107 Prenatal Checkup
Royal Maternity Hospital, Bangkok.
In the prenatal examination room, Ruan Xingchen was lying on the examination bed, Mo Xiaohan's palm was always against her lower back, and the silver ring conveyed a reassuring warmth through the thin fabric.
The probe of the three-dimensional color ultrasound machine slid across her bulging belly. The image of the fetus on the screen was stretching its body comfortably, and its little hands and feet moved from time to time, as if saying hello to mom and dad.
The six-month fetal anomaly screening was crucial for the entire pregnancy, and even though the Mo family had a medical team and a private hospital, they couldn't afford to be careless. Having arranged security in advance, they still came to this prestigious obstetrics hospital with a century-old history.
"The fetal development indicators are perfect," said Dr. Pirawi, an obstetrician wearing gold-rimmed glasses, gently gesturing at the ultrasound screen. "But just to be completely sure, I recommend a more detailed genetic screening. After all, your previous traumatic history could have affected the embryo."
Mo Xiaohan frowned: "What screening?"
"We need to draw amniotic fluid, and the entire process must be sterile. Only patients are allowed in." Pilawi gestured to the sterile room next door. "Family members, please rest in the waiting area. It will take no more than half an hour."
Mo Xiaohan narrowed his eyes and his fingers subconsciously stroked the holster.
Ruan Xingchen gently squeezed his palm: "It's okay, just a routine check."
"I'm at the door." He was silent for a moment, and finally leaned over and kissed her between the eyebrows. "Call me if you feel any discomfort."
The shielded door of the sterile operating room slowly closed.
Ruan Xingchen was lying on the examination bed when he suddenly smelled a sweet fragrance in the air, like a mixture of jasmine and ether.
Her eyes vigilantly swept across the glass of the fire hydrant in the corner, where she saw Dr. Pilawi's trembling hands, his fingertips quietly touching the PPK pistol inside her skirt.
As the doctor took out the special puncture needle, Ruan Xingchen suddenly said, "Isn't this the hospital's injection? I remember... the Royal Hospital uniformly uses equipment imported from Germany."
Dr. Pilawi paused, sweat forming on his forehead. "This is the most... newly introduced..."
"Is that so?" She suddenly turned over and got out of bed, her pregnant belly making her movements a little slow. "Who do you belong to?"
Dr. Pilawi's face suddenly changed and he pressed the alarm. Two Naga warriors disguised as nurses rushed out from behind the isolation curtain.
"Excuse me, Mrs. Mo." He slipped a syringe from his sleeve and stabbed it straight into her neck. "Mr. Berg wants to invite you to Switzerland to do—"
"Bang!"
The sound of gunfire ripped through the silence.
Ruan Xingchen had pulled out a miniature pistol from under her skirt at some point, and the bullet pierced Piravi's forehead accurately, and blood splattered on the sterile curtain.
Taking advantage of the momentary delay between the two assassins due to the gunfire, Ruan Xingchen prepared to evade the instrument panel. However, one assassin recovered first, rushed over, and slammed into her stomach. The fetus seemed startled and began to twist restlessly.
Ruan Xingchen felt a surge of turmoil in her abdomen, as if a powerful force was trying to pull the fetus out of her body. But she couldn't afford to delay for a moment. She endured the excruciating pain and fired another shot, the bullet accurately piercing the assassin's throat.
"Be good, baby..." Ruan Xingchen gritted her teeth and whispered to comfort him, with cold sweat on her forehead, "Mommy is fighting... Don't be afraid..." At the same time, she used the corpse as a shield to block another assassin, and raised her knee to hit his lower abdomen.
"Ugh!" The moment the other person screamed and doubled over, she gasped and pressed against his temples. "Tell me, what does Victor want to take me to Switzerland for?"
There was a loud noise of a door being broken outside. A cruel look flashed in the assassin's eyes and he wanted to grab the gun and fight back. Ruan Xingchen pulled the trigger without hesitation and hit his shoulders. Blood splattered and the assassin knelt on the ground with a groan.
Mo Xiaohan had been closely monitoring the movements inside the prenatal examination room from the entrance when his encrypted communicator suddenly transmitted an urgent message. The signal would interfere with the delicate examination equipment, and since the hospital had already prepared security measures before arriving, he paused for a moment before walking to the end of the corridor to answer the call. Unexpectedly, within a few minutes, gunshots rang out in the examination room.
"Seal off the hospital immediately! Don't let a single cockroach out!"
He jumped up instantly, gave orders into the communicator, and rushed to the examination room with his gun drawn.
Mo Xiaohan shot open the explosion-proof lock and kicked open the door of the shielded room. The scene in front of him made his pupils shrink suddenly. Ruan Xingchen was holding the instrument table with one hand and pointing the gun at the assassin on the ground with the other hand. Her chest was heaving violently and the hem of her skirt was stained red with blood.
When the assassin saw Mo Xiaohan, he immediately grinned and bit the poison sac hidden in his teeth. His pupils dilated in an instant and he became silent.
"Xingxing!" He rushed over to support her body which was about to fall to the ground. His palm touched something warm, wet and sticky. Blood was constantly flowing out from between her legs.
"Xiaohan... the baby is bleeding..." Ruan Xingchen grabbed his collar with a pale face, "Victor wants to take me to Switzerland..."
The hospital was completely sealed off, with Mo family guards controlling the entire building and all exits. Mo Xiaohan rushed to the operating room, carrying the bloodied Ruan Xingchen. His fingertips trembled lightly on her cold face, "Hold on... Xingxing..."
The chief obstetrician looked at the monitor with a serious expression: "The mother is bleeding heavily... The fetal heart rate has dropped sharply. The situation is very grim. The pregnancy may need to be terminated..."
"I just want my lady to be safe." Mo Xiaohan's voice was firm and decisive, without the slightest hesitation, "I just want her to be protected at all times."
Before the operating room door closed, Ruan Xingchen murmured weakly: "Xiaohan... as long as there is a glimmer of hope... save the child..."
The lights in the operating room were blindingly red.
Mo Xiaohan stood outside the operating room, his body stained with Ruan Xingchen's blood. His cold voice was filled with suppressed rage: "How did Victor's bastard get in?!"
"He bribed his wife's prenatal doctor and Abhisit, the chief guard assigned to the hospital..." A-Tai trembled as he reported the results of the investigation. "But... Abhisit just committed suicide in the bathroom... His family in Nonthaburi Province is under our control..."
"Take his entire family to the water dungeon." Mo Xiaohan's voice was filled with murderous intent. "Since he dared to die, let his family pay for the punishment he didn't suffer."
In the operating room, Ruan Xingchen vaguely heard the mournful cry of the fetal heart monitor in the severe pain. She felt the little life in her belly receding like the tide, as if someone was dragging her into the cold deep sea.
"Hold on... baby..." she murmured, stroking her belly, "I'm sorry... Mommy didn't protect you well..."
"Blood pressure dropping! Prepare for a blood transfusion!"
"The fetal heart rate weakened—"
In a daze, she seemed to hear Mo Xiaohan say, "He will be the most noble child in this land. I want everyone to kneel before our baby's throne."
Then, she heard him chuckle and recite the names "Mo Jinchen" and "Ruan Zhaoxi"...
"Baby..." Ruan Xingchen gathered up the last bit of his strength and touched his abdomen, "Hold on... Don't leave mommy and daddy..."
The monitor suddenly began to sound a rapidly recovering heartbeat, and darkness had completely swallowed up her consciousness.
The lights in the operating room were still on, and the blood-red light stung Mo Xiaohan's eyes.
He stood frozen outside the door, like a statue in ice and snow. The warm blood from Ruan Xingchen in his palm was slowly cooling and solidifying, just like his heart, which was now freezing inch by inch.
His star, in a place he thought was safe, right under his nose, was once again dragged into mortal danger.
Mo Xiaohan had never felt so terrified. He had traversed the battlefields of his life, treading blood and blood. He had never frowned at the sight of bullets and gunfire, and he had faced the brink of life and death with composure. But at this moment, he dreaded the news the doctor would bring when the operating room door opened. He dreaded the moment the red light went out, and the complete collapse of his world. He dreaded losing his star, along with their child, who had never seen the light of day...
That tightly closed door separated his entire world, and for the first time, it made him feel more desperate than the abyss under the gunpoint.
