Chapter 6 The Starlight That Can't Be Taken Away
——He wanted to go with her, but this world never allows light and darkness to go together.
The gauze on Mo Xiaohan's left eye was finally removed. Dr. Ruan said that in a few days, he would be able to fully recover his vision.
Ruan Xingchen stood on tiptoe in front of him, holding his face with her small hands, looking carefully into his eyes, and suddenly laughed: "Brother Xiaohan's eyes are so beautiful! Like stars at night!"
Mo Xiaohan was stunned.
In the slums, no one ever complimented his eyes. They would simply avoid his gaze in disgust, calling him a "whore's bastard" and saying he had the eyes of a wolf cub who would kill someone sooner or later.
But at this moment, Ruan Xingchen held his face and smiled brightly, as if there were really stars in his eyes.
He subconsciously raised his hand and touched his left eye. The wound had healed, leaving only a faint scar.
"Really!" Ruan Xingchen nodded vigorously.
Mo Xiaohan pursed his lips and said nothing, but the tips of his ears turned red.
But as the wound healed, another kind of pain spread in my heart - the medical team's evacuation notice was issued on a rainy night.
Late at night, Mo Xiaohan was awakened by whispers outside the tent.
He quietly rolled out of bed and slid close to the crack in the canvas like a wild cat. In the moonlight, Dr. Ruan was arguing in low voices with Captain Li of the medical team.
"The embassy documents have arrived. We must evacuate in three days." The medical team leader lowered his voice. "The child has no identification, so we can't take him with us."
"But if we leave him here, he won't live more than three months!" Dr. Ruan's voice trembled. "You know what the slums are like!"
"But he's a child of the Mohist family!" The captain suddenly emphasized, "Do you think we secretly took him in without being discovered? The Mohist family has been eyeing this place for a long time!"
Mo Xiaohan's breathing stagnated.
Mohism.
The surname he had only heard in his mother's drunken sobs - the controller of the largest underground force in Southeast Asia, and he was the most unbearable stain on that family.
An illegitimate child born to a prostitute is worse than a stray dog.
Inside the tent, Ruan Xingchen turned over and called out in a daze, "Brother Xiaohan..."
Mo Xiaohan quickly returned to bed, closed his eyes, and pretended to sleep. The little girl's warm hands groped for the edge of his clothes, like grabbing the only driftwood.
In the darkness, he clenched the candy wrapper boat hidden under his pillow.
The next morning, Ruan Xingchen rarely nags him to get up.
She sat on the edge of the bed, her face tense, holding a crumpled flyer in her hand. Mo Xiaohan squinted his eyes and saw clearly the notice of the medical team's evacuation printed on it.
"Brother Xiaohan." She suddenly spoke in a muffled voice, "Is your father... a very bad person?"
Mo Xiaohan's muscles tensed instantly.
"Mom cried last night." Ruan Xingchen lowered her head and rubbed the ground with her toes. "She said...she said she really wanted to take you away, but she couldn't."
There were footsteps outside the tent, and Dr. Ruan came in with a bowl of hot porridge. Seeing the expressions of the two people, he instantly understood something.
"Xingxing, can you go and help Captain Uncle sort out the medicines first?" she whispered to her daughter.
Ruan Xingchen blinked, as if he noticed that the atmosphere was wrong, but he still nodded obediently and secretly handed Mo Xiaohan a piece of fruit candy before leaving.
The tent became quiet.
Doctor Ruan walked up to Mo Xiaohan and squatted down to look him in the eye: "Xiaohan, the medical team will be returning home the day after tomorrow."
Mo Xiaohan's fingers squeezed the candy tightly, and the candy wrapper made a slight rustling sound.
"I've discussed this with the consulate and want to take you away under the guise of medical assistance, but your identity is somewhat special..." She paused, her voice lowering. "You know who your father is, right?"
Mo Xiaohan nodded expressionlessly.
Of course he knows.
The night before his mother died, she grabbed his hand and laughed crazily: "You have his blood in you! That beast! He clearly promised... promised..."
What did you promise?
Take them home? Acknowledge his identity?
In the end, it all turned into the hissing sound of cigarette butts burning my skin, and my mother's last words before she breathed her last—
"Run... Never let them find you..."
Doctor Ruan took a deep breath and said, "A few days ago, someone came to the medical station to ask about you." Her voice was very soft. "They said... the Mo family is cleaning their blood vessels."
Mo Xiaohan sneered.
Cleansing the blood? It should be cleaning the stains, right?
How can a bastard born from a prostitute be worthy of tarnishing the noble Mohist bloodline?
"Mom!" Ruan Xingchen suddenly ran into the tent and grabbed her mother's hand. "Let's take Brother Xiaohan away secretly! Hide him in the suitcase!"
Doctor Ruan smiled bitterly and shook her head: "The border inspection is too strict, and..." She looked at Mo Xiaohan, "If he goes with us, it will harm him."
Mo Xiaohan understood what she meant.
The Mo family's influence is spread throughout Southeast Asia. Once discovered, not only will he die, but Ruan Xingchen and her daughter will also be implicated.
"I'm sorry." Dr. Ruan's voice was filled with guilt. "I tried everything, but..."
Mo Xiaohan interrupted her: "No need."
His voice was cold, like ice in deep winter.
Dr. Ruan was silent for a moment, then finally sighed, took out a piece of paper from her pocket, and put it in his hand: "This is my address and phone number in China. If..." She paused, "If one day you can leave here, remember to come find us."
Mo Xiaohan looked down at the note, on which was neatly written a line of Chinese characters and a phone number.
He slowly folded the note and put it in his pocket.
