Chapter 70 Undercurrents
The evening at the manor was immersed in warm orange glow, and the sunset spread over the rose bushes, dyeing the petals even more intensely.
Ruan Xingchen sat on the swing with a copy of "International Medical Journal" spread out on his knees, but he didn't turn a page for a long time.
Mo Xiaohan walked behind her and gently combed her long hair with his fingers: "What are you thinking about?"
Ruan Xingchen looked up at him with a complicated expression: "That Victor Berg...are you doubting him?"
Mo Xiaohan paused: "Why do you ask?"
"Intuition." She closed the magazine. "You've looked at his profile seventeen times in the past two days."
Mo Xiaohan chuckled, leaned over and placed a kiss on the top of her head: "My stars are becoming more and more sensitive."
Ruan Xingchen grabbed his tie and tugged gently: "Don't change the subject."
Mo Xiaohan lowered his head, his nose almost touching hers.
"If one day..." His voice was soft, but every word was clear, "someone wants to use you to deal with me, what will you do?"
Ruan Xingchen looked at him quietly for two seconds, then suddenly smiled, her eyes gleaming wildly and fiercely. She pulled out the Walther PPK hidden in her sleeve and pressed the muzzle to his temple.
"I'll pull the trigger first."
Mo Xiaohan's eyes suddenly darkened, he grabbed her neck and kissed her fiercely.
The setting sun lengthened the shadows of the two people, overlapping them in the rose bushes, like a fiery and lingering totem.
Three days later, in The Pavilion Ballroom at the Rosewood Bangkok.
Mo Xiaohan had no intention of attending the Berg Pharmaceuticals charity dinner. However, the European investigation into Victor Berg's background had been difficult to make. Rather than repeatedly speculating, he decided to use this dinner as an opportunity to directly test the waters.
At this moment, Mo Xiaohan was dressed in a black custom-made suit, his black diamond cufflinks exuding a cool metallic texture, and the ring on his left ring finger was faintly visible under the light. Ruan Xingchen, holding his arm, was wearing a dark red velvet dress, her lips were blood red, and the black diamond necklace around her neck echoed his cuffs.
The waiter bowed and led the way, his tone respectful: "Mr. Mo, Mrs. Mo, Mr. Berg has been waiting for a long time."
Ruan Xingchen tightened her fingertips slightly. Mo Xiaohan's eyes fell on her clenched hands, and his thumb stroked the back of her hand soothingly.
"Don't be afraid." His voice was so low that only she could hear it.
Ruan Xingchen raised his eyes, a faint smile on his lips: "With you here, have I ever been afraid?"
Victor Berg stood in the center of the banquet hall, his gray-blue eyes like two pieces of cold glass under the light. He wore a dark gray three-piece suit, platinum cufflinks engraved with snake patterns, and held a glass of amber whiskey between his fingers. His posture was as elegant as that of an ancient European aristocrat.
"Mr. Mo." He smiled and nodded, his English voice low and pleasant with a German accent, but his eyes fell on Ruan Xingchen. "Is this the legendary Miss Ruan?"
Ruan Xingchen didn't wait for him to reach out his hand. She naturally moved half an inch closer to Mo Xiaohan, her red lips raised slightly: "I'm more used to people calling me 'Mrs. Mo'."
Victor raised his eyebrows and smiled even more deeply: "Excuse me, Mrs. Mo."
His gaze lingered on the black diamond on her neck for a moment, then slid to the silver ring on her ring finger, which was a pair with Mo Xiaohan's.
"It's a very special ring." He said meaningfully, "Like... a custom-made keepsake?"
Ruan Xingchen chuckled, his fingertips carelessly stroking the ring surface: "It's a gift from an important person, so it's naturally special."
Mo Xiaohan's eyes darkened slightly, and he quietly put his arm around her waist and pulled her to his side.
Victor seemed not to notice his vigilance and raised his glass, "To Mr. and Mrs. Mo."
The wine swayed in the glass, reflecting the cold light that flashed in his eyes.
Halfway through the dinner, Ruan Xingchen went to the terrace to get some fresh air. The cool night breeze brushed against her cheeks. Just as she leaned onto the railing, she heard footsteps behind her.
"A rose is more interesting with thorns."
Victor's voice sounded behind him, still holding the glass of whiskey in his hand. The distance was just right and polite, but with a hint of aggressiveness.
Ruan Xingchen didn't look back, tapping the railing lightly with his fingertips: "Mr. Berg also studies plants?"
"I just have an appreciation for beautiful things." He walked to her side, his gray-blue eyes almost transparent in the moonlight, "especially... a rose that has been carefully nurtured, yet still retains its wild nature."
Ruan Xingchen glanced at him sideways, a smile on the corner of his lips, but his eyes were as cold as ice: "Then you should know that touching other people's roses will cost you a price."
Victor chuckled, suddenly leaned over, and whispered in her ear, "What if Rose is willing?"
Before Ruan Xingchen could answer, a bony hand had already grabbed Victor's shoulder with such force that it almost crushed his bones.
Mo Xiaohan's voice was as cold as frost: "What are you talking about so happily?"
Victor stepped back calmly and raised his glass to indicate, “Just praising Mrs. Mo’s beauty.”
Mo Xiaohan didn't respond, but put his arm around Ruan Xingchen's waist and turned to leave.
Behind him, Victor's eyes were glued to Ruan Xingchen's back like a poisonous snake.
On the way back in the car, Mo Xiaohan tapped his knees with his fingertips, his eyes deep.
Ruan Xingchen leaned on his shoulder and played with his silver ring: "He is not simple."
"Yeah." Mo Xiaohan pinched her fingers, "Stay away from him."
Ruan Xingchen raised his eyes: "Are you afraid that I will be deceived by him?"
Mo Xiaohan looked down at her, then suddenly leaned in and kissed her. This kiss was filled with strong possessiveness, and he didn't pull away until she gasped and pushed him away. His nose still pressed against hers, his eyes brimming with passion.
"No one can take you away." He brushed his thumb across the corner of her wet lips, his voice low and firm, "Unless I die."
Ruan Xingchen chuckled and pointed his fingertips at his chest: "Then you must live well."
Outside the car window, the neon lights of Bangkok blurred into a bloody red.
And in the dark, the poisonous snake has already set its sights on its prey.
