Chapter 76 Awakening of Revenge

Chapter 76 Awakening of Revenge

Ruan Xingchen huddled in the corner of her bedroom, her arms tightly wrapped around her knees, her fingertips digging into her flesh, yet she felt no pain. Her eyes were red and swollen, tears still clung to her eyelashes, and her lips were bloody from her own bite.

This was the scene Mo Xiaohan saw when he pushed the door open - she was like a bird drenched by a rainstorm, her feathers wet and sticking to her body, her eyes terrifyingly empty.

He walked over, knelt on one knee in front of her, and lifted her chin forcefully, forcing her to look at him: "Look at me."

She struggled, but he held her tightly.

"Have you cried enough?" He locked his gaze with her. "Will crying bring your mother back to life?"

Ruan Xingchen's pupils shrank slightly, and her pale lips trembled: "Then what can I do? Continue to be your 'Mrs. Mo'? Let my mother in heaven watch her daughter become an executioner?!"

Mo Xiaohan's thumb brushed across the corner of her red and swollen eye: "No. What you have to do is let her watch--"

"Her daughter avenged her with her own hands."

"Victor showed you the blood-stained scarf and sang the praises of your mother's 'selflessness' not because he respected her." His voice was as cold as a knife dipped in ice, yet it could cut through people's hearts more deeply than a knife. "It was because he knew that destroying a person's faith was more cruel than killing her."

Ruan Xingchen's breathing stagnated slightly, and his chest felt like it was blocked by something, causing him to feel stuffy and painful.

"He took advantage of your guilt and self-blame to make you doubt yourself—" Mo Xiaohan's thumb brushed across the corner of her eye again, suppressing the tears that were just welling up. "This is his purpose."

Ruan Xingchen's fingertips trembled, but she still turned her face away stubbornly: "So what? Mom is dead... and I'm standing by you. The blood on my hands can't be washed clean!"

Mo Xiaohan's voice softened: "How many people has Doctor Ruan saved?"

Ruan Xingchen was stunned: "...a lot."

"She saved children from war, saved dying soldiers, saved sick refugees—" He leaned forward, his eyes closing in, "Then has she ever saved a bad person?"

She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

"Yes." Mo Xiaohan answered for her, "Because she only sees the 'injured', not 'good or evil'."

"She believed in saving lives all her life, and her scalpel saved countless lives," his voice was calm and almost cruel, with a cruel clarity, "but her faith is worthless in front of Victor."

Ruan Xingchen's breathing suddenly stopped, and tears fell on the back of his hand like beads with broken strings, burning hot.

"And my bullets can make Victor pay with his life—" He leaned close to her, his nose almost touching her forehead, his voice filled with cruel determination: "I will make Victor bleed as much as your mother saved. But you're collapsing now, which is exactly what he wants."

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her in. She clutched his shirt tightly and buried her face in his chest, her tears instantly soaking his shirt.

Mo Xiaohan tightened his arms, rested his chin on the top of her head, sighed silently, and gently stroked her back with his fingertips.

After a long moment, she finally spoke, her voice as light as a feather: "...I hate him."

Mo Xiaohan lowered his head and kissed the top of her head: "I know."

"I want to watch him die."

"Yes."

Ruan Xingchen looked up at him, the fragility in her eyes gradually replaced by a kind of firm edge. Mo Xiaohan's fingertips stroked the corners of her eyes and wiped away the tears.

"Hate me?" he whispered. "Hate me for bringing you into this world?"

Ruan Xingchen looked into his abyssal eyes, where there was no judgment, no mercy, only the purest darkness - like a mirror, reflecting her true appearance at the moment.

"No." She suddenly grabbed his wrist with surprising strength. "What I hate is..."

Tears fell on their clasped hands, hot as molten lead.

"I actually started to enjoy this position."

Mo Xiaohan chuckled softly and clasped the back of her head with his palm: "Then enjoy it to the end."

His kiss fell, forceful yet gentle, as if to devour all her anxiety and guilt. Ruan Xingchen's fingertips dug into his back, as if grasping at the only piece of driftwood in the abyss.

Late at night, Ruan Xingchen leaned in Mo Xiaohan's arms, stroking the silver ring on his left ring finger.

"Are you still sad?" he asked in a low voice.

She shook her head and looked up at him. "Victor... won't give up, right?"

Mo Xiaohan raised his hand and gently rubbed her cheek with his fingertips, with a touch of soothing warmth: "Poisonous snakes never bite just once."

Ruan Xingchen was silent for a moment, then raised her hand to hook it around his neck and pull him closer: "Then let him try--" She took the initiative to kiss him, and when their lips and teeth touched, she mumbled, "Can you bite it or not?"

The moonlight outside the window shines through the gauze curtains, casting mottled light and shadows on the overlapping figures of the two people. The air is filled with hidden passion and determination.
