Chapter 53

The two kissed on the hill, when no one else was around.

It wasn't until Gao Zhuo accidentally turned a corner and appeared not far away, exclaiming in surprise, that everyone else came over.

As for the parties involved, Zhou Zuizui and Shen Nan were kissing, so engrossed in their own world that they didn't realize they were putting on an intimate act in front of everyone.

After a while, Shen Nan lightly pecked the corner of her mouth, turned around with Zhou Zuizui in his arms, and looked at the few little brats not far away. The warning in his eyes was very obvious.

Gao Zhuo instinctively shivered and grabbed the child, running away in a flash.

From that day onward, new rumors began circulating within the team about the captain and his wife.

Previously, everyone thought Captain Shen had a bad relationship with his wife. He never appeared in public with her, never showed affection for her, and his wife even refused to eat with them. Perhaps she disliked or looked down on Captain Shen. After this incident, everyone repeatedly denied this rumor.

Several teammates who witnessed Captain Shen and his wife's intimacy commented that their captain and wife have a great relationship! If they weren't still out in the world, they might have already gotten intimate.

Of course, no one knows whether this rumor is true or not, and Zhou Zuizui naturally didn't know about such a rumor.

...

The two hugged for a long time, and after being exposed to the cold evening wind, Shen Nan's body heat gradually dissipated.

Zhou Zuizui's face turned as red as if it were about to bleed. She reached out and pushed his shoulder, biting her lower lip: "Shall we go back now?"

Shen Nan glanced at her, smiled, and teased, "Shy?"

Zhou Zuizui glanced at him: "No."

She would never admit that she was shy.

Shen Nan raised an eyebrow, but didn't expose her. After calming down for a while, he licked his lips before taking Zhou Zuizui's hand and going back together.

Back at the hotel, everyone behaved normally, showing no signs of discomfort or unease, and simply invited the two of them over to eat.

"Captain, come quick, this side is ready."

Shen Nan scoffed and raised an eyebrow: "Okay, I'll be right there."

He led Zhou Zuizui over, looked at the barbecue in front of him, and nodded in satisfaction: "Looks good."

Zhou Zuizui was also overjoyed, looking at the barbecue vendors in front of her: "Let me try some."

"Sister-in-law, please eat."

Shen Nan held a skewer to her lips, and Zhou Zuizui took a bite. It was incredibly delicious. Her eyes lit up, and she looked at the people in front of her who were waiting for praise. She nodded hurriedly and said, "It's delicious! How come your cooking is so good?"

The group smiled sheepishly and said, "After all, we often have field training and such. We may not have other skills, but we have to practice these things, otherwise we'll go hungry if we don't have anything to eat in the wild."

That's true. They often have outdoor training, and everyone is quite good at wilderness survival skills. Outdoor training is inherently monotonous, and everyone can only console themselves with what they eat at noon and in the evening. So over time, everyone has become quite good at barbecuing and cooking in the wild.

Zhou Zuizui chuckled, gestured with the beer bottle on the side to the group, and said with a slight smile, "You've all worked hard."

These words were spoken with utmost sincerity. She genuinely felt that everyone had worked hard, not just for today, but also for many other things.

The group was taken aback, looked at her, and smiled wryly, saying, "It's only right!"

With that, they all downed a can of beer in one gulp. No one could match their loyalty and courage.

It was precisely because of this that the people in the Shennan team grew to like Zhou Zuizui even more. In fact, many military wives are very kind, but they had always thought that a great beauty like Zhou Zuizui might have a slight disdain or look down on them.

After spending time together, everyone realized that there was absolutely no such thing.

She didn't look down on anyone; instead, she showed them even more admiration and support.

For them, that's enough.

Zhou Zuizui took a walk around and found that the outdoor hot pot was all set up, as well as barbecue, and someone even had a beggar's chicken. Suddenly, the place was full of delicious food, and the aroma made people really want to eat it.

The aroma was so enticing, it made one's stomach rumble.

A group of people sat together, forming a large circle as they ate the food in front of them, completely satisfied.

Zhou Zuizui sat with Shen Nan, looking at the soldiers across from them who were enjoying their meal, and felt a strange sense of emotion.

I hope they can always be this happy. I hope every mission they undertake is safe and sound. I hope there will be many more times like this, so they can have lively picnics and camping trips together, and eat together again.

Shen Nan could sense her emotional change, so he reached out and rubbed her head: "Eat your food, what are you thinking about?"

Zhou Zuizui smiled and shook her head, saying softly, "It's nothing, I'm full, I'm going to take some photos."

She wanted to take photos of soldiers in a more relatable, everyday way.

Shen Nan paused, then looked up at her: "Okay, go ahead."

"Uh-huh."

Zhou Zuizui took several photos with the camera on the side, capturing everyone's appearance before stopping.

After dinner, the tents were set up early.

Those who want to rest can rest first, and those who don't can sit outside and look at the stars. Zhou Zuizui looked at Chen Jing and the others and was extremely surprised: "When did you bring a guitar?"

Shen Nan chuckled: "They took it this morning. We were walking ahead, so you didn't notice."

Zhou Zuizui: "…………"

She genuinely didn't notice.

“Some of them like music,” Shen Nan explained to her. “And they’re preparing a program for you when you leave in a few days.”

Upon hearing this, Zhou Zuizui's eyes lit up, and she looked at Shen Nan: "When we leave... we're going to have a farewell party, right?"

“There’s a smaller one,” Shen Nan said in a low voice. “I was originally planning to give you a surprise, but I’m telling you first.”

Zhou Zuizui laughed and clung to Shen Nan's arm, acting coquettishly: "Then do you want to go on stage and perform?"

"No," Shen Nan refused firmly, "I can't sing."

Zhou Zuizui smiled, her eyes crinkling, and whispered in his ear, "Aren't you going to go even if your wife asks you to?"

Shen Nan paused, squinted at Zhou Zuizui for a long time, and then whispered in her ear, "It's okay to sing it only for my wife."

Zhou Zuizui, flustered by his flirting, coughed lightly, her face flushed, and feigned modesty: "Never mind, it's okay if I don't go up and perform." She said, "Just watch everyone else."

"Um."

The two sat not far away, watching the breeze and listening to the laughter and conversation of the group across from them. They felt a sense of ease and comfort in this kind of life. It was a rare kind of comfort.

This group of people has no ulterior motives, only honesty. What they present to you is nothing but sincere sincerity. This kind of thing is so precious and so touching.

That night, everyone stayed up very late before finally tidying up and going to sleep.

Because it was in the wilderness, they still had people on night watch. A dozen soldiers took turns to take good care of these guests who had come from afar.

Their photographer offered to join the vigil, but was sent back.

In Shen Nan's words, this was an easy thing for them, allowing everyone to sleep peacefully.

Lying in the tent, Zhou Zuizui listened to the wind outside and turned to look at the people who had arrived late: "Is everything arranged?"

Shen Nan hummed in response, his voice deep and dark: "Why aren't you asleep yet?"

"Wait for you."

Shen Nan laughed, leaned down and kissed her, saying, "Don't mess with me... these people have sharp ears."

Although he really wanted to do something with his wife, Shen Nan was shameless enough not to care if others heard anything. But Zhou Zuizui was different; she was actually quite shy, and she still had a week of training with the team afterward. For her sake, Shen Nan couldn't do anything tonight.

Thinking of this, Shen Nan sighed softly.

If I had known... I should have set up their tent a hundred meters away, so they could come and go as they pleased.

Zhou Zuizui gave him a speechless look and bit Chen Nan's lip: "I didn't mean to do anything."

Shen Nan glanced at her: "Is that so?"

Zhou Zuizui chuckled and kicked him, saying, "I'm going to sleep."

"Go to sleep." Shen Nan didn't tease her anymore, but lowered his head and kissed her eyes to coax her, "I'll wake you up to watch the sunrise tomorrow morning."

"Um."

Zhou Zuizui closed her eyes, feeling the warmth emanating from the person beside her, and soon fell asleep. Shen Nan watched her until she was asleep before getting up and leaving.

Gao Zhuo glanced at the person who came out, raised his eyebrows, and asked in a low voice, "Captain, aren't you going to sleep?"

Shen Nan glanced at him and said, "You go to sleep first, I'll keep watch over things here."

"That's not a good idea." Gao Zhuo thought for a moment, then sent the other two to sleep, and said in a low voice, "Go to sleep first, and we'll wake you up when the captain and I get sleepy."

"Okay," Chen Ruifeng said, "Remember to call us."

"rest assured."

The wind grew stronger, and the night grew deeper.

The only downside to being on the mountaintop is the strong wind.

Gao Zhuo and Shen Nan sat together gazing at the starry sky. After a while, Gao Zhuo suddenly said, "Captain Shen."

"Hmm?" Shen Nan plucked a blade of grass and put it in his mouth, responding casually.

Gao Zhuo remained silent for a while before finally asking, "When you saw Bai Feiyang... is he still emotionally unstable?"

Shen Nan paused, his mouth, which was holding a foxtail grass, stopped moving. After a moment of silence, he said, "No."

Gao Zhuo clicked his tongue, propped his wrist up, glanced at him, and said speechlessly, "Don't think I don't know what you're thinking. I'm too embarrassed to ask since they're all here."

Gao Zhuo has been a comrade-in-arms of Shen Nan for many years, and the two have fought side by side many times. Although Gao Zhuo may seem naive and innocent, he is quite capable when it comes to his duties.

He wasn't actually very close to Shen Nan before, even though they were on the same team. But with so many people on a team, it's impossible for everyone to be familiar with everyone. Back then, Shen Nan and Xu Feiyang were the most spirited and outstanding.

The two were the most compatible partners in the team, and many of their missions back then were accomplished by the two of them. They were both daring and highly skilled, especially Xu Feiyang. Although he wasn't as good as Shen Nan in other aspects, his marksmanship was extremely accurate. He said that if he could hit someone's little finger, he definitely wouldn't let the ring finger get away with it; that was roughly the level of skill he possessed.

When they first joined that special training team, the two had an excellent rapport and worked together to accomplish many impossible tasks.

But a few years ago, during a special mission, only five people went: Shen Nan, Gao Zhuo, Xu Feiyang, and two other comrades.

That mission was so difficult that it was impossible to complete smoothly. In the end, the failure was indeed due to a erroneous message being transmitted from their undercover agents. It was a trap set by the other side.

Gao Zhuo still remembers that scene.

Two other comrades sacrificed their lives, and Shen Nan and Gao Zhuo successfully escaped the trap, but Xu Feiyang did not. At that time, Shen Nan rushed back to save people without regard for his own safety, but in the end... Xu Feiyang shouted at Shen Nan, telling him to shoot him and kill him.

He didn't want to be tortured, and he didn't want to be captured by the enemy.

His hands, feet, and other parts of his body were all bound, making suicide impossible. He was crying and begging Shen Nan to kill him; they didn't want to be humiliated and would rather die a glorious death than fall into the hands of others.

The situation was too urgent. If Shen Nan didn't fire, other comrades would. Even if they were crying, they had to fire the shot.

They had a helicopter rescue at that time. Gao Zhuo was almost at the top, holding onto the rope, while Shen Nan was still at the bottom, holding the gun in his hand, but he hadn't pulled it down yet.

Until Xu Feiyang shouted, "Shen Nan, I beg you, I'll exchange one of the conditions you promised me for this: please shoot me dead."

The condition was an agreement that Shen Nan would do whatever Xu Feiyang asked him to do if he lost a competition.

Shen Nan couldn't pull the trigger until he saw the other side desperately beating and torturing Xu Feiyang, even using some low-level methods to torture him. But before Shen Nan could pull the trigger, Xu Feiyang died.

Xu Feiyang is dead.

After the two of them returned to the team for a while, Shen Nan remained silent for a long time. When the mission was launched for the second time, Shen Nan led his men to the mission in person and thoroughly avenged Xu Feiyang. When they returned, no one noticed anything unusual.

However, Gao Zhuo, who had worked with him on missions, knew that he hadn't recovered from that experience.

Later, Shen Nan applied to go to the frontier, and Gao Zhuo went with him. During the two years on the frontier, Shen Nan became increasingly taciturn and rarely spoke.

He seemed to be atoning for his sins, or perhaps letting go of something in his heart. When he returned two years later, Gao Zhuo himself thought he had let go. It wasn't until recently, when Shen Nan directly brought two talents selected from the training program to their team, that he realized that he hadn't.

Bai Feiyang in the team has the same name as Xu Feiyang, and even their hobbies are very similar. Shen Nan pays more attention to this comrade-in-arms than others. Although he seems to be the strictest with Bai Feiyang, Gao Zhuo knows that he is doing it for Bai Feiyang's own good.

He is nurturing Bai Feiyang to become even more outstanding and excellent.

Bai Feiyang is stubborn, as is Shen Nan. Sometimes when they're on the team, it's like they're at odds.

No matter what Shen Nan does, it's all for Bai Feiyang's good.

…………

Shen Nan remained silent for a long time.

Just when Gao Zhuo thought he wouldn't speak, he finally said, "I think about it occasionally."

Shen Nan didn't fire that shot back then, but he still can't get over it.

His former comrade-in-arms, if it weren't for the problems that arose back then, Xu Feiyang wouldn't have ended up in the back. If it weren't for the fact that he was working alongside Shen Nan, Xu Feiyang wouldn't have fallen into the hands of those people. Shen Nan would think it was his own fault.

Even though everyone told him that Xu Feiyang was going back to tell him that if the two of them hadn't cooperated, he might be the one dead now, or both of them might be trapped there, in Shen Nan's heart, it would take time to overcome this hurdle.

Gao Zhuo paused for a moment, then patted him on the shoulder and said, "You've done enough over the years. The Fei Yang incident wasn't a mistake on your part."

Shen Nan understood this principle, but ultimately he had his own psychological barriers.

However, Shen Nan rarely showed it in normal times, and he also knew that Xu Feiyang's matter was not his problem.

The two lay half-reclined on the ground for a while. After a moment of enjoying the breeze, Gao Zhuo asked, "Do his parents still contact you?"

"Occasionally."

"Have you given money to his sister many times?"

Xu Feiyang has a younger sister, and Shen Nan had been sponsoring her schooling for many years.

Shen Nan's Adam's apple bobbed, and he said in a low voice, "I send them a sum of money every month, not specifically for his sister."

It was for those two elderly people.

Gao Zhuo said "Oh," and looked at Shen Nan: "Captain Shen, you're really not being fair. Why didn't you ask me to do this kind of good deed? Do you think I'm broke?" He snorted and said: "Next time, let's go see him together."

The anniversary of Xu Feiyang's death is approaching.

Shen Nan nodded, his throat a little dry: "Okay."

He gazed at the stars in the night sky, lost in his own world, not knowing what he was thinking.

Gao Zhuo lay quietly beside him.

Everything will pass; everything will disappear with the passage of time.

The next day, the group got up to watch the sunrise and took a stroll on the neighboring mountain before returning to their unit to rest, completely satisfied.

On Sunday night, everyone was able to rest early since they didn't have to train.

Zhou Zuizui could sense from the morning that Shen Nan was not in a good mood, but she didn't ask. She just sat quietly next to Shen Nan and kept him company.

After returning to the team, Shen Nan went to the office, while Zhou Zuizui pondered for a moment before lying down in her room to rest. When Zhou Zuizui returned, Shen Nan was already covered in sweat.

Zhou Zuizui was taken aback and looked at him in surprise: "Where did you go? Did you go for a run?"

Shen Nan hummed in agreement, then suddenly lowered his head and kissed her, his lips entwining with hers in a tender, lingering kiss.

Zhou Zuizui was stunned for a moment, but she didn't push him away and responded to his kiss.

After a while, the two separated, panting. Zhou Zuizui couldn't stand it anymore and pushed his shoulder: "Go take a shower first."

"Want to go together?"

Before Zhou Zuizui could agree, Shen Nan carried her into the bathroom.

The sounds of water and heavy breathing in the bathroom were mixed together, making them difficult to hear clearly.

After a long while, when Zhou Zuizui came out of the bathroom, she didn't want to move a single finger. She suspected that Shen Nan had taken some kind of drug today!

Shen Nan lowered his head and kissed her reddened eyes, gently coaxing, "Are you feeling unwell?"

Zhou Zuizui glared at him: "What do you think? I already said I didn't want it, why did you come back?"

Her voice was hoarse.

Shen Nan kissed the corner of her lips and whispered, "I'm sorry."

"Are you acting strange today?" Zhou Zuizui was silent for a moment, then looked up at him: "You're not in a good mood."

So she let Shen Nan go just now, even though it was a bit excessive... but she quite enjoyed it. Of course, it can't be like this every day. Zhou Zuizui can accept it once in a while, but if it's like this every day, she might die young.

Shen Nan paused slightly, stared at her for a long time before finally humming in agreement: "A little."

Can you tell me?

Shen Nan paused for a moment, then carried the person to the bed. "Yes."

He recalled it for a moment, and after recounting it, Shen Nan realized that after so many years, he could calmly describe the entire situation back then. What Gao Zhuo didn't know was that Xu Feiyang had indeed saved him.

Xu Feiyang had already gone out, and Shen Nan was a little behind. But later Xu Feiyang said that his marksmanship was better than Shen Nan's, and told Shen Nan to run ahead, while he followed.

Then, that problem arose.

...

After listening, no one spoke in the bedroom for a long time.

Zhou Zuizui didn't know what to say. Although she felt that Shen Nan was very violent when she first saw him, he was also considerate to some extent.

In short, she didn't know how to put it. She didn't remember the events of two years ago very clearly, but after observing for a week, she found that Shen Nan was indeed quite nice to Bai Feiyang.

She pursed her lips and remained silent for a while before reaching out to hug Shen Nan and patting his back to comfort him: "It's all over now."

Shen Nan hummed in agreement: "I know."

"So, are you being nice to Bai Feiyang now because you feel guilty?"

Shen Nan chuckled, glanced at her, and said, "No, I can tell who's who." He lowered his voice and said, "The reason I'm good to Bai Feiyang is because he is indeed a promising talent. He's unruly and will not be able to control his personality if he isn't properly trained."

He said, "Your marksmanship is excellent. With proper training, you'll become absolutely outstanding."

It's not that they paid more attention just because their names are similar. From the first day the captain told him, Shen Nan could tell them apart very clearly.

Zhou Zuizui nodded, seemingly understanding but not quite.

She suddenly looked at Shen Nan, blinked, and asked, "You mean... if your comrade hadn't gotten into trouble, would your position as his wife have nothing to do with me?" She smiled teasingly, deliberately trying to amuse Shen Nan: "Just tell me honestly, do you two have any homoerotic feelings for each other?"

Shen Nan: "…………"

He stared at Zhou Zuizui in astonishment, then, unable to contain himself any longer, reached out and pinched her cheek, gritting his teeth as he said, "Do I need to prove my loyalty to you again?"

Zhou Zuizui snuggled into his arms and exclaimed, "No, no, I was just joking."

She smiled, hugged Shen Nan, and whispered, "You've done enough over the years. Besides, when you go on missions, you help each other out. You're comrades-in-arms, so teamwork is normal. It's not that he's lagging behind because of you."

She comforted Shen Nan, saying, "So much time has passed, it's time to move on."

"Hmm." Shen Nan patted her head, indicating that he understood.

The two embraced and remained silent for a while, then Shen Nan suddenly warned through gritted teeth again: "Don't overthink it! We just have a very straightforward camaraderie!"

Zhou Zuizui couldn't help but burst out laughing as she listened.

Captain Shen... he's really hilarious.
