Li Ying's hair was disheveled and her face was pale; she had clearly been in low spirits all day.
Gao Qiang wasn't much better off. The usually spirited man looked like he'd just been released from a concentration camp, unkempt and haggard.
When Wang Xiufen saw them like this, she quickly went over and helped them up.
"What's going on? Get up and talk to me."
She simply couldn't understand what the couple could possibly need from her.
Jiang Ning and Lin Chen exchanged a glance, both knowing perfectly well that the couple had definitely gone to the county police station to see Gao Xiaolan.
If she could pay 20,000 yuan in compensation, she could save a few years in prison, so Gao Xiaolan would definitely not give up seeking her parents' help.
Unexpectedly, Gao Qiang spoke up:
"Jiang Zhiqing, you're close to that Song Jia, could you ask her to let Xiao Lan go?"
Jiang Ning sneered inwardly. Where did these words come from?
It's true that she and Song Jia are very familiar, but what does it mean to tell her to let Xiao Lan go?
Throughout this whole affair, Song Jia was the victim. They showed no remorse towards her, instead using the word "let her go."
Were these two people misled by Gao Xiaolan, or did they really think that way?
"Captain Gao, Song Jia and I are indeed very familiar with each other, but I really can't do anything about this. Arson is a criminal case, and it was the printing factory that reported it. No one can change that. If you have money to compensate the printing factory for its losses, you can reduce her prison sentence by a few years."
Jiang Ning sat in the chair, calmly saying these very cruel things to them.
Li Ying hurriedly stepped forward and grabbed Jiang Ning's arm, her expression panicked as she said:
“Jiang Ning, Xiao Lan only did this wrong thing because she was dissatisfied with Song Jia. She was confused for a moment! Song Jia has always been at odds with her. Just because her husband is the deputy factory director, she threatened Xiao Lan that she wouldn’t be able to pass her internship. Don’t you think she also bears some responsibility?”
Jiang Ning now knows how Gao Xiaolan has been gossiping about Song Jia; she probably doesn't have any nice things to say about her behind her back either.
She gently shook off Li Ying's hand and chuckled.
"Is that what she told you about Song Jia? Did she even say that I slapped her? Originally, when you came to my door asking to borrow money, I was willing to consider lending you some. I didn't expect that you would come to my door and talk badly about Song Jia after only hearing her side of the story."
I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do to help.
She refused outright.
Seeing that Li Ying was about to continue harassing him, Lin Chen quickly stood next to Jiang Ning and protected her behind him.
Wang Xiufen quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
“Li Ying, we will definitely help Xiao Lan in any way we can after she got into trouble, but you can’t force her to do something she doesn’t want to do.”
Xiaolan just turned eighteen, right? Maybe we can talk to the police and try to reduce her sentence.
Hearing this, Li Ying grasped at a straw and looked at Jiang Ning again.
“Jiang Zhiqing, I was too anxious just now. Xiaolan is indeed a very difficult child to manage. She even argued with us last time.”
I didn't want to get involved, but she's a piece of my own flesh and blood, and I can't just stand by and watch her die.
After hearing what she said, Zhao Ergou looked at her with disdain.
Upon seeing this, Gao Qiang roared at him:
"What kind of face is that? I didn't ask you for anything!"
Zhao Ergou jumped up and spat at him:
"What, you're making things difficult for Jiang Ning because your daughter made a mistake? You always find fault with others when something goes wrong, instead of looking for the reasons within yourself."
The others sitting in the chairs admired Zhao Ergou immensely. They dared not utter such words to a criminal, yet Zhao Ergou spoke them so fluently.
Gao Qiang was furious and dragged Li Ying outside.
“Come on, I told you I wouldn’t come, but you insisted on coming here to be humiliated.”
Lin Tao from next door, how could he let such a good opportunity pass by? He ran over with a concerned look on his face, pretending to be angry, and said:
"Honestly, you guys not only refuse to help, but also make sarcastic remarks. Captain Gao has always been incredibly kind to you, but when things come to a head, this is the kind of face you show."
Lin Chen clenched his fist and walked towards him.
"Lin Tao, what's it to you? Come here. Do you think you didn't teach him a lesson hard enough last time?"
Lin Tao was so frightened that he quickly ran away.
Before long, he called a lot of people to come and watch.
Some people are saying that Jiang Ning had received a lot of help from Gao Qiang in the past, but now that he needs her, she hasn't shown any appreciation.
Gao Qiang and Li Ying felt that they had someone backing them up, and they seemed to be trying to morally blackmail Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning lowered her eyes and thought for a few seconds, then put on a smile for Li Ying:
“Since you think highly of me, I’ll give you two choices.”
Li Ying thought there was hope and listened attentively.
"I just got a folk remedy that can cure Xiaolong's illness and guarantee that he will be as smart and quick-witted as before. I'll give you two choices: do you want this folk remedy, or do you want me to plead for Xiaolan?"
After Jiang Ning finished speaking, she waited quietly for her answer.
Li Ying looked troubled. She and her husband dreamed of Xiaolong getting better, and they wanted to try this folk remedy regardless of whether it worked or not.
But what about Xiaolan...?
"Jiang Zhiqing, give me the folk remedy. You don't need to trouble Xiaolan. She brought it on herself, so she deserves a lesson."
As if afraid that Jiang Ning would change her mind, Li Ying quickly answered after making up her mind.
Gao Qiang glared at her, "Aren't you going to care about Xiao Lan?"
"What can we do then? Don't you want Xiaolong to get better?"
After arguing for a while, the couple finally agreed to use a folk remedy.
A collective sigh rippled through the crowd. Gao Xiaolan, sitting in the police station, never dreamed that her fate would be so easily decided by her parents.
Soon, Gao Xiaolan was sentenced to five years in prison.
