Xu Jie was completely drunk. Seeing Lucy now wearing a wool coat and with curly, fluffy hair, she was completely different from her innocent appearance during her student days.
His question immediately threw Lucy into a panic.
The only option now is to find a way to get Xu Jie away first.
If the soft approach doesn't work, try the hard one.
Her eyes darted around, and she reached out to pinch his ear tightly, yelling:
"You think I'm being too nice to you? We just got married and you're already asking for a divorce, and you even said you need the police to help you. No wonder they don't have time to deal with you."
While twisting his ear and pulling him out, he apologized and saluted the police.
"Comrade, I'm sorry, he's had too much to drink. I'll take him home."
The unsuspecting police officers thought it was a real argument between a couple that had come to the police station, and were about to wave them away so they wouldn't interfere with their work.
Lin Chen, standing to the side, grabbed Xu Jie:
"Brother, the friend you mentioned who committed a crime, is that your wife?"
Upon hearing the word 'crime,' the police became more alert.
What exactly is going on with you guys?
Lucy glared at Lin Chen, then grinned at the police officer: "It's really nothing, my husband must have been drunk and was just making things up."
Lin Chen let out a sneer:
"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. Why are you so nervous?"
At this moment, Jiang Ning, having completed the formalities, came out of the interrogation room and was startled to see Lin Chen, Xu Jie, and Lucy entangled together.
"Ah Chen, what's going on?" She went over and took Lin Chen's arm.
When Lin Chen saw her, he was pleasantly surprised and grabbed her to check her over from head to toe.
"Honey, you've explained things clearly. That's great."
My eyes welled up with tears because I was so excited.
Jiang Ning pointed to Xu Jie, who was being supported by Lucy and was swaying precariously, meaning to first explain what had happened between them.
Lin Chen hurriedly explained, "I was drinking with this Comrade Xu Jie just now. He said he wanted to report a friend who committed a crime, but his wife showed up just in time and tried to pull him away."
Don't you think this is a bit of a cover-up?
After listening, Jiang Ning glanced at Lucy, who was trying to appear calm, and felt a surge of anger inside.
Just as she guessed, it was indeed her. She had a strong motive for the crime and had not been exposed before because her husband had helped cover for her.
"Officer, you must not overlook any clues, investigate them thoroughly!" Jiang Ning said with a smile.
The policeman had just interrogated her and had a good impression of her.
Out of caution, he kept both Xu Jie and Lucy behind.
Lucy was so frightened that her legs went weak, and under Xu Jie's heavy body, the two of them fell to the ground together, looking utterly disheveled.
"Let's go."
Lin Chen held Jiang Ning's hand and walked out happily, when Tongtong jumped out from the side.
"Mother."
Her small hand squeezed past Lin Chen's large hand and took his.
Jiang Ning asked in surprise, "Why did you come here?"
He caught a glimpse of Gao Baoliang out of the corner of his eye.
She immediately guessed that Lin Chen, with his unshaven beard, must have been waiting for her at the police station all night without sleeping, and had even called Gao Baoliang back.
After exchanging a few words, the group ran into Xu Yan again.
She was worried about Jiang Ning and took leave to come and help clear things up for her. Seeing that she was alright, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Jiang Ning thanked her repeatedly, introduced her to Lin Chen and Gao Baoliang, exchanged a few pleasantries, and then advised her to go back to work.
"Sister Xu, when you get back to the company, please tell Jack that I will be going back to work tomorrow."
Xu Yan nodded and waved to her with a smile.
When Jiang Ning returned home, Jiao Jiao immediately clung to her, refusing to let go, as if afraid that she would be taken away again.
"It's okay, Mom just went to help the police catch the bad guys."
Jiang Ning smiled and comforted her.
Jiaojiao tilted her head, her eyes clear: "Did they catch the bad guy?"
"Gotcha!"
"Then I'm relieved."
Jiaojiao jumped off her and went to play with Tongtong.
Gao Baoliang knew Jiang Ning was alright, so he ate a quick bite of food and went out.
I'm not selling clothes today, so I'll just go check out the courtyard house. The renovation should be in the painting stage, and he wants to thoroughly inspect the previous stage.
Of course, he's been looking at houses lately too.
He really liked the courtyard house at No. 88, but finding one that was similar was quite difficult.
There are very few courtyard houses with independent property rights like these.
As he was strolling through an alley, he spotted a familiar figure at the street corner in the distance.
Meng Jiao had long, elegant hair styled with curls across her forehead. She wore a woolen suit and a camel-colored coat with a fur collar, making her look fashionable and elegant.
On a street filled with people wearing red floral cotton-padded jackets, her attire vividly demonstrated the wealth gap of that era.
She gracefully removed her gloves, picked up the book in her hand, and smiled brightly at the man beside her, seemingly discussing the contents of the book with him.
And that man was her childhood sweetheart, Li Jiabao.
He always knew that the two of them met often, but seeing them laughing and talking together still made his heart ache.
He instinctively ducked behind a wall, clutching his aching and throbbing chest as he breathed heavily.
He couldn't help but feel sorry for himself.
When you run into your partner, instead of greeting them, you avoid them.
Damn it, all those years as a criminal investigator were for nothing, what's there to be afraid of with your own girlfriend!
He ran his fingers through his buzz cut, came out from around the corner, and was about to go over and say hello to them when he saw the two men crouch down, get into a car, and drive away.
He ran a few steps to catch up, but all he saw was a trail of dust.
He then realized that he and Meng Jiao hadn't seen each other for two weeks. They had planned to climb the Great Wall last week, but she said she had an interview and couldn't go.
