When Kyle and Kanna came out of the Room of Requirement, it was almost time for the afternoon class, so they did not go back to the common room, but went directly to the basement classroom.
There were two consecutive Potions classes in the afternoon, and it was also their first class with Slughorn.
When they arrived at the corridor outside the dungeon, there were already quite a few people in the classroom, including Qiu. She and several Ravenclaw students were sitting at the table closest to the podium.
Kyle and Connor walked into the classroom.
Slughorn's personality is completely different from Snape's. Before this year, there was never any sunlight here, and the lighting depended entirely on the few torches that were lit in the classroom all year round.
In addition, the surrounding furnishings were full of weird smells, with various frog and mouse entrails, leech slime and other things everywhere, which did not look like a classroom at all. Instead, it looked more like a shop in Knockturn Alley that sold black magic items and illegal potions.
But Slughorn was different; he didn't like those dark decorations.
The torches on the wall were removed and all the bottles and jars were put away (perhaps taken away by Snape). Instead, there were various cauldrons emitting white smoke and steam.
The curtains were drawn for the first time, and Slughorn seemed to have cast a spell on the window to make it look like the ceiling of the Great Hall. For the first time, Kyle saw the bright sunshine outside in the dungeon.
This feeling is quite fresh.
"Look, that's the resuscitation potion." At this time, Kanna whispered beside her.
The resuscitation potion was the kind of magic potion she invented for the Extraordinary Pharmacist Association assessment. Its effect was similar to that of the sobering potion, both of which could keep people refreshed, but there were some differences.
If the sobering potion is a stimulant, then the recovery potion is coffee. Although it cannot suppress fatigue, it can keep people clear-headed throughout the day. I guess each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
What Kanna didn't expect was that her potion had not yet been officially announced, but it actually appeared in the Potions classroom.
"It seems that Professor Slughorn does have some connections." Kyle whispered.
The two of them went to the crucible where the resuscitation potion was and sat down. As soon as they got close, Kyle smelled a faint mint scent, like a cool breeze gently patting his cheeks, very comfortable.
"Okay, students." Slughorn stood on the podium, his fat figure looming in the steam.
"Before class, I have prepared several special potions to broaden your horizons. Please don't misunderstand me. This is not to make things difficult for you. It is purely out of my personal preference... I think these magical potions may spark your interest in this course."
"Well, let's start with this." He pointed to the nearest cauldron. "Does anyone know what this is?"
There was a light blue potion in the crucible, but it was emitting white smoke.
"I know, it's the Bafe brain stimulant!" Qiu was the first to raise his hand.
"Very good," said Slughorn cheerfully, "It is Buffy's Brain-Stimulus, one of the most popular potions among the graduates, but I must say that it is illegal to use it in the exams, and it will invalidate your grades.
"But if you are studying normally, it is okay to drink a little."
"What about this?" He pointed in another direction.
The potion in the crucible this time was not as good-looking as the previous Bafei brain-stimulating agent. It was grayish white and sticky, and looked like cement.
No one in the classroom raised their hand.
Professor Slughorn looked a little disappointed, but just as he was about to give his answer.
"It's the invisibility potion." Kanna raised her hand.
"Absolutely." Slughorn was a little surprised and pleasantly surprised at the same time.
"Yes, the invisibility potion. Just apply it on the body and it will make people disappear... But to be honest, I will probably never use this."
"Why?" asked a Hufflepuff boy puzzledly. He was closest to the crucible and was lying on it, carefully examining the sticky substance inside.
"Does anyone know?" Slughorn asked with a smile, but his eyes were on Connor.
"I guess it's because of the properties of the invisibility potion. It must stick tightly to the body. Once it falls off, it will lose its effect. And the troll's snot is the best adhesive."
Troll's snot?
Ugh! The Hufflepuff boy took two steps back and then covered his mouth and retched.
Other people around also stepped back.
"Don't get so excited, it's just a potion ingredient." Slughorn said, "You have to know that in times of war, this potion is the most precious thing. It can even save your life."
Despite this, no one wanted to get closer, especially those sitting next to the crucible. When they thought of the smell of troll snot in the air, they were eager to move to a seat farther away.
But it was class time now, and Slughorn would definitely disagree.
In addition to these, there are also stimulant potions in the classroom that can increase people's strength, and dandelion potions that can make you fly after drinking them.
Moreover, both potions were recognized, one of them was Kanna, and the other was a Ravenclaw boy.
"Okay, I admit that I underestimated you. Seventh graders do have a richer understanding of potions."
Slughorn walked slowly to the last cauldron, where Kyle and Connor were.
"But I must say that you definitely don't know what this last potion is."
A smug look appeared on his face. "Although this may be a little unfair, this is a brand new potion that has not yet been announced. It was invented by the youngest member of the Extraordinary Pharmacist Guild in history."
Kyle glanced at Kanna subconsciously, but was glared back at.
“Of course, some people who have paid attention to the Extraordinary Pharmacists Association may be wondering why they didn’t see the list of new members, right?
Slughorn continued, "That's because the list won't be announced until after Christmas, but fortunately, one of the wizards in charge of the assessment this year is my student. So after the assessment, he couldn't wait to share the first-hand information with me."
There was a burst of discussion around, and everyone was surprised at Professor Slughorn's well-informed information, which made him even more proud.
"Professor..." At this time, Kyle suddenly said casually: "What if anyone knows what this potion is?"
"Then I'll give him a hundred points," Slughorn said casually, obviously not thinking there was such a possibility.
"Well," he cleared his throat, "allow me to introduce to you all this, this is..."
"Resuscitation potion," a familiar voice whispered, interrupting Slughorn.
He opened his mouth and turned to look at Kanna in disbelief.
"You...how could you possibly know...wait." He seemed to have thought of something, "You are?"
"Connor Prince," Connor said.
"Prince...Prince..." Slughorn whispered, and then he showed an unconcealable surprise on his face, "Oh, that's right, it's Prince... You must be the girl who took the Extraordinary Pharmacist Association exam last month, right!"
There was discussion again, and this time it was louder, and everyone looked at Kanna.
"I did take the test, and the resuscitation potion was also my work." Kanna nodded, "But I don't know if I passed it."
"I assure you, there will be no problem. Don't forget that I have inside information." Slughorn blinked, "Oh, remember to keep it confidential for me. According to the regulations, this is not allowed to be disclosed."
Then he looked at Kyle and complained, "You did this on purpose, didn't you? Are you waiting to see me make a fool of myself?"
"I'm sorry, Professor. I thought you knew," Kyle said. "Didn't you look at the list? Connor's name was on it."
"I should have looked that up," said Slughorn, somewhat annoyed; he preferred to get to know everyone in class rather than going through lists.
He just didn't expect that this habit would make him look so embarrassed today.
But Slughorn wasn't really angry. Compared to knowing that Connor Prince was in his class, this little embarrassment was nothing.
"Well, it's time to fulfill my promise," said Slughorn. "Hufflepuff will get 100 points... well, let's add 50 points first. I forgot that I'm no longer the head of the house and don't have the authority to get a large amount of extra points. But don't worry, I'll go find Dumbledore."
Kanna shook her head, indicating that she didn't care. In fact, in her opinion, getting an extra 50 points was already good enough, after all, Kyle had no good intentions.
Slughorn said, "And your potion is also very good. I now add a little bit of it to my breakfast every day. It helps me better prepare for each class during the day."
"Thank you for your comments, Professor."
Connor was very happy to be recognized by Slughorn, a well-known potion master.
"Well, today is full of surprises." Slughorn waved his wand, and all the cauldrons on the table disappeared. "But we should start class now. Turn to page 22 of your Advanced Potion Making."
Hearing this, everyone who was still unsatisfied could only take out their textbooks.
"Professor, you haven't told us what's in here yet." A Ravenclaw boy asked, pointing to a small black crucible on the podium.
The liquid in the crucible looked like molten gold, or like golden fish, tumbling and jumping inside, but not a drop spilled outside.
"Ah, you've found it at last," said Slughorn, smiling. "It's a most curious little potion. I thought one of you might know what it is."
"It's the Felicis, sir," said Qiu, somewhat excitedly.
"Also called the Lucky Potion!" added someone next to her.
"Yes, five points for Ravenclaw," said Slughorn. "I have to say, teaching seventh-year students is easy. It seems that Severus' advanced class is really strict."
Then, just as Kyle had expected, Slughorn gave out Felicis Felix as a prize for this class.
The whole classroom was in an uproar, as no one seemed to have expected that the new Potions professor would be so generous.
That's the Felicis, can it be given away just like that? On the podium, Slughorn looked at the scene in front of him that was exactly the same as that in the sixth grade, and nodded with satisfaction.
As an old professor, he knows very well that the biggest difficulty he faces now is how to gain recognition from students.
And this is his solution. With just a small bottle of Fuling potion, the problem is solved perfectly. It is very cost-effective.
Of course, it is not possible to do this for every grade. Even if his family is wealthy, he cannot afford seven bottles of Fuling potion.
It is mainly for sixth and seventh graders. As for students below fifth grade who are not in advanced classes, he has other methods.
"I repeat," Slughorn said, raising his voice to drown out the chatter below, "the one who does the best will win this vial of Felicis.
"Where were we before... Oh, turn back to page twenty-two. You have over an hour to brew your portion of Polyjuice Potion.
"Yes, part of it. You will find that this is not a potion that can be completed in a short time. The increasingly complicated process and the longer time are the biggest differences in the seventh grade potions class.
“Correspondingly, the difficulty of making potions will also increase, because if there is any mistake in the process, all previous efforts will be wasted.
"Good luck to you."
No one could refuse a small bottle of luck potion. As soon as Slughorn finished speaking, everyone started flipping through their copies of Advanced Potion-Making frantically.
Slughorn had prepared all the necessary materials in advance and placed them in the storage cabinet at the door, including lacewings that had been boiled twenty-one days in advance.
This thing does not require any technical skills. Even a second or third grade student can complete it. It just requires patience. Slughorn feels that there is no need to waste any more time.
Everyone stood up to get what they needed, but since there weren't many people who had attended Snape's advanced class, it wasn't as crowded when getting the materials as it was before the fifth grade.
By the time Kyle got the sap grass picked during the full moon, someone was already processing the ear grass.
Everyone was working hard on the work in their hands, but couldn't help but care about the progress of others, fearing that they would fall behind.
The only person in the classroom who didn't move was probably Kanna. Her eyes were always on the crucible in front of her.
Kyle added three portions of liquid grass into the crucible, and also added two bundles of ear grass. When the potion in the crucible gradually turned into a light yellow color, he immediately took out his wand and stirred the potion three times clockwise.
The potion turned light pink, which was also the best state.
Now that he's here, Kyle doesn't have to keep an eye on it.
He put down his wand and calmly dealt with the leeches on the table. Kanna was even faster than him.
"Kyle." Connor asked in a low voice, "What do you think Professor Slughorn's criteria will be, this class? Or after the potion is finished?"
"It should be all done." Kyle said after thinking for a while.
Judging from the time, they could only produce lacewings in this class, which was only a part of the compound decoction and could hardly be used as a criterion for evaluation.
After dealing with the leeches, Kyle added two spoonfuls of lacewings into the mortar and began to grind them finely. This was also the most time-consuming part. The finer the lacewings were ground, the more stable the effect of the medicine would be.
Sixty minutes later, the potion in the crucible had turned into a tea-brown color. Kyle quickly adjusted the fire to the minimum and added four portions of leeches and the previously ground lacewing powder.
"Bang!"
Just then, a loud noise suddenly came to my ears.
Kyle's first reaction was that someone's cauldron exploded, and that was indeed the case. A Ravenclaw boy seemed to regard them as a strong enemy and had been observing the situation here.
This also caused him to neglect his crucible and forget to turn the fire to low before adding the lacewing powder.
When the boiling sap grass meets the lacewing powder, it is like pouring flour into fire, and it explodes on the spot.
"Armor protects you!"
Kanna's voice came to his ears, and the splashing potion was blocked less than five inches in front of Kyle.
"Thank you." Kyle said, he really didn't react.
"You're welcome." Kanna shook her head. "I smelled a faint burning smell just now, and I guessed that someone's cauldron was about to explode. Fortunately, I was in time."
But others were not so lucky. The splashing potion was like a rain in the classroom, scalding everyone and making them scream.
Even Slughorn was no exception. Kyle saw two drops of potion fall on his bald head.
"Before adding the lacewing powder, you have to lower the flame. Why would anyone make such a low-level mistake?" He covered his head and waved his wand, and the potions disappeared instantly.
"Five points from Ravenclaw," he said.
The Ravenclaw boy looked a little depressed. He really didn't want to miss the lucky potion.
"Well, considering that this is your first mistake..." Slughorn sighed, "It will take a few days before the final potion is completed. After class, I will allow you to use this classroom for another hour. Remember, only one hour."
"Thank you, Professor." The boy said happily and then ran quickly to the locker.
The lacewing solution needs to be boiled for another 20 hours before proceeding to the next step. Slughorn should have made special adjustments to it, as tomorrow morning happens to be a Potions class.
If this Ravenclaw boy is fast enough, he should still be able to catch up with the others.
Half an hour later, the bell rang.
Slughorn moved slowly between the tables, examining each cauldron in turn.
After checking each one, he would tap the table with his wand, and a thin circle of lines would appear around the crucible.
This is to prevent someone from having bad intentions and sneaking into the classroom to destroy other people's potions when there are no classes.
There was no such step originally, but ever since he witnessed the strong tension between Gryffindor and Slytherin two days ago, he felt that he needed to do so.
Although it is a bit troublesome, it is better than wasting two classes.
