Chapter 3: Questions at the Palace Banquet, Sacrificial Incense Offerings

The Ling family members did not begin to move until much later. The young ladies got out of the carriage and helped each other into the palace gate.

Ling Xiao looked up at the palace, its tall and majestic buildings displaying the splendor of a prosperous era.

The women of the Ling family were dazzled, and the eldest daughter, Ling Hua, couldn't wait to step into the palace.

Conversely, Ling Xin's fingers trembled nervously.

Will this demon be able to pass through the palace gates?

The imperial palace in the capital is the most important place, and there have been no reports of demons harming people there, so it must be protected.

If a demon were to disguise itself as a member of the Ling family and reveal its true form in full view of everyone, the Ling family would be finished.

As a daughter of the Ling family, she herself will not have a good end!

The quick-witted girl quickly figured out the reasoning, and Ling Xin's face turned deathly pale, almost like a dead person.

Suddenly, she gritted her teeth, strode forward, and took Ling Xiao's hand. Whether it was out of fear or something else, the icy touch in her hand sent a chill down Ling Xin's spine.

Ling Xiao, who had been attacked, looked up with a bewildered expression, her little face showing a cute and confused look.

"Holding my hand will help cover us up."

After Ling Xin finished speaking, she lowered her head and dared not linger. She pulled Ling Xiao forward and bumped into the young lady Ling Hua, causing her to stumble.

After passing through the palace gate, everything was fine. Ling Xiaosong and Ling Xin had just grabbed each other's hands.

He said in a strange, soft voice, "People can be really strange sometimes."

The system had no idea what was wrong with her; it just rolled over like a dead fish and ignored her completely.

The palace banquet officially began, with the powerful nobles and the emperor exchanging pleasantries and engaging in lively conversation.

As minor officials, the Ling family members were seated near the palace gate; if they didn't take the initiative, they wouldn't get anything.

Everyone had their own thoughts and were looking for opportunities, except for Ling Xin and Ling Xiao who remained in their seats.

Ling Xiao watched the song and dance with great interest, even mimicking the movements with her hands and feet, while the others just smiled knowingly.

The adorable little girl stretched out her tiny hands and waved them, her clumsy movements were incredibly cute.

The system was already screaming in terror, "What are you doing! Stop it..."

Threads of hair, barely visible to the naked eye, extended outwards, like a spider's web, densely covering the entire hall.

Seeing that the little system was about to burst into tears, Ling Xiao stopped, since he had already done what he needed to do.

Ling Xiao replied half-heartedly, "Relax, relax~ I'm just trying to become the most favored concubine."

"If you want to be the most favored concubine, go seduce the emperor! Spreading your hair all over the palace, are you trying to film a horror movie?"

It's no longer the elite system it once was; it takes so long to shout a single sentence to make your throat crack.

Ling Xiao twirled a strand of hair between her fingers, her eyelashes lowered. "Shut up, and watch how I become the most favored concubine in the harem."

The last note rises sharply upwards, like the tail of a scorpion carrying a sharp, venomous poison!

The emperor stood up on the high platform and raised his cup, instantly silencing the lively banquet.

"My beloved ministers, since my ascension to the throne... Today's victory over the Southern Barbarians is a great joy. We just held a ceremony to worship our ancestors, and the incense smoke rose straight up. I believe our ancestors were moved by this..."

The officials below the stage were also trembling with emotion, each one raising their sleeves to wipe away tears, clearly showing their deep feelings.

With the ministers all cooperating so well, and Li Yue speaking with great enthusiasm, the atmosphere between the emperor and his ministers reached a climax.

Some people, fearing it wasn't lively enough, had the captured Human Khan dressed in red.

With a thick layer of powder on his face and blush applied like a monkey's bottom, he made his entrance like a dwarf clown telling jokes in the palace.

Li Yue burst into laughter upon seeing this, pointing at Zhuo Qi, the Minister of the Court of State Ceremonial, and said, "You mischievous devil!"

Even so, it was clear to everyone that the emperor didn't care. Zhuo Qi shrugged and said, "To receive a smile from His Majesty is a great honor for this barbarian."

As the Southern Barbarian Khan began to dance, the atmosphere reached its peak, and Ling Xin gradually relaxed, reaching out to pour herself a glass of plain wine.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the demon leave his seat.

Oh my god!

At the magnificent banquet filled with singing and dancing, the little girl's figure walking to the center initially went unnoticed.

However, some people noticed that when the palace maids tried to pull her down, she would fall to the side without even touching the hem of her clothes.

Slowly, Ling Xiao finally reached the center of the banquet.

Li Yue wasn't blind. When he saw a little girl standing in front of him, he didn't even frown. Instead, he laughed heartily.

"Whose young lady is this? What brings her here?"

Others also noticed the little girl below the Emperor's high platform.

The light red top paired with the moon-white skirt is made of fabric not used by palace servants, so it must belong to a young lady from some wealthy family.

However, he didn't wear many accessories, and they weren't very valuable, so his family must not be very wealthy.

The people looked at each other in bewilderment, wondering which family had dared to be so bold.

Ling Xiao tilted her head slightly. In Li Yue's vision, her large eyes were completely black. She looked at him and suddenly uttered a sentence.

"You said you offered sacrifices to your ancestors, but why didn't I receive any incense?"

These words shocked the entire audience.

Minister Xu, a veteran official who had served two dynasties, was so angry that his beard trembled. He pointed at Ling Xiao and roared:

"This disrespectful brat dares to utter words that blaspheme against the royal ancestors; his crime is unforgivable!"

He strode forward, and seeing that unstoppable momentum, no one doubted how Minister Xu intended to uphold the dignity of the nation.

Not only will the girl suffer, but her family will likely face condemnation as well.

Minister Xu took the lead in making the first move, and the others were eager to try as well. The guards standing around with their swords all drew their swords.

No one noticed how terrified the lowly official and his family were, who were near the palace gate.

"Alright, she's just a little girl."

Suddenly a calm voice came, and Minister Xu's beard stopped trembling. His expression quickly returned to calm, and he stopped walking as if nothing had happened.

Everyone looked up at the high platform, where the young emperor stood up and first patted the hand of the empress beside him, whose face showed anger.
