Chapter 39 The God of Rain

The enormous bronze triangular cauldron was filled with precious spices by spirited Taoist priests, and the strong aroma wafted all around.

Ling Xiao's small figure appeared below the high platform, while Li Yue followed a step behind, solemn and respectful.

Under the watchful eyes of millions, the goddess appeared as a wisp of smoke, ascending to the ten-zhang-high platform in the blink of an eye.

The early winter sunlight, like a golden veil, hazily enveloped her.

Her outstretched arms fluttered in the wind, making a rustling sound.

A jade-colored talisman appeared in the void, radiating light as the goddess recited unintelligible scriptures. The light grew brighter and brighter, and the recitation became louder and louder.

—Good stuff! The Taoist priest carrying the spices had bloodshot eyes and tried his best to memorize the scriptures.

Until the sound could be heard even in the seemingly endless crowd, the jade edict disintegrated, forming a beam of light that was neither real nor illusory, reaching straight to heaven and earth.

The clouds changed drastically, covering the entire sky in an instant, and a faint rumble of thunder could be heard.

The god of rain is coming soon—everyone thought to themselves.

Countless people held their breath, and the entire place was completely silent. Anyone who dared to make a sound would be met with disgusted looks from those around them.

How glorious it is to witness a miracle!

A fierce wind howled, the sky and earth changed color, and lightning flashed back and forth.

Li Yue strained to raise his head, refusing to back down even as the wind whipped his face like knives. He wanted to watch the goddess "Auntie" do something blasphemous that mortals should not do.

A thick bolt of lightning struck straight down from the platform, moving with incredible speed and unstoppable force. The bright, crackling lightning made no doubt about its power.

"Goddess, run!" Ling Xinteng stood up abruptly, her soft voice turning shrill.

A series of gasps erupted from the crowd.

The lightning illuminated the goddess's small, delicate face, which was calm as still water, with a hint of mockery in her eyes.

Li Yue caught that look in his eyes and felt much more at ease.

Sure enough, the fierce lightning only grazed the goddess's fluttering sleeves, revealing her slender arm, before striking her feet and creating a large crater.

The white smoke from the lightning strike on the stone drifted away, like miasma in the mountains, blurring the goddess's expression.

The audience relaxed simultaneously, letting out a loud sigh of relief. Ling Xin fell to the ground, covering her mouth and weeping.

The next second, the small figure on the altar burst into unrestrained laughter. Lightning seemed to be enraged, striking one after another, the bursts of light illuminating the dark sky.

And so—they all saw that not a single bolt of lightning dared, or could, strike the goddess.

"Is that rain god no match for the goddess?" someone muttered quietly, snapping out of their reverie.

"Of course, doesn't this look like Wang Er from the village entrance, who can't win against the village chief? He throws a tantrum to his face, but doesn't even dare to touch the village chief."

Someone gave an example, and explained it very logically.

As if it had heard the blasphemous words, lightning struck the crowd with a thunderous roar.

More than a dozen silver lightning bolts fell indiscriminately.

Li Yue's position, perhaps due to its proximity to the altar, incurred the wrath of the petty Rain God, as two bolts of lightning struck from the southeast.

"Protect His Majesty"

Yan Pei shouted as he bravely tried to stand in front of the emperor, his heart pounding like a drum.

Many more who witnessed the lightning strike were terrified, unable to escape and with no time to cry out.

Li Yue stood calmly and composedly, even though the flash of lightning had already illuminated his face and pain would strike in the next second.

Auntie wouldn't stand by and watch the God of Rain attack them.

That's so embarrassing.

Sure enough, the skin felt a slight tingling heat; the lightning had dissipated before it even touched the skin.

The lightning became more and more frequent, eventually forming streaks of lightning that fell one after another, as if foreshadowing the furious mood of their master.

Without exception, the young goddess dealt with it lightly.

"Knowing it's useless, you still attack. Si Yu, has your brain been eaten by a dog?"

The clear, childlike voice echoed throughout the region, its mockery deeply hurtful.

Just then, the God of Rain in the sky finally couldn't help but show himself, revealing a pair of huge hands from the thick, blanket-like dark clouds, and shoved them to the sides.

First came the eyes, as big as copper bells, then the nose and ears, and soon they were fully revealed.

There stood a giant, towering like the heavens, with black hair standing on end, each strand hard and bristling, his face contorted with rage, and holding a thunder hammer.

"Goddess of Mount Tai, I have been lenient with you in every way out of respect for the Lord of Mount Tai, and I believe I have not done anything disrespectful. Why do you always humiliate me!"

The sound shook the heavens, and a wave of sound crashed down. Li Yue felt a sharp pain in his ears, and his head spun and he was in great pain.

Looking down, the onlookers were also shocked by the sound, and one by one they used whatever they could find, such as clothes or cotton, to cover their ears.

The Goddess of Mount Tai, looking displeased, directly produced a talisman, saying, "What are you yelling about? You think you're so loud? You have no compassion whatsoever! Bah! Shrink to a smaller size!"

The talisman glowed, and the body of the rain god shrank at a visible speed.

The giant in mid-air struggled desperately under orders, first taking out his lightning hammer to try to shatter the talisman, but to no avail.

Then they took out all sorts of treasures, but none of them were of any use.

In just ten breaths, the giant had shrunk to the size of a normal person, becoming merely a strong man.

"Goddess..." Ling Xin looked at this scene in a daze, calling out in a groan-like voice. The overwhelming emotions in her heart made her tremble and feel hot all over.

Li Yue glanced back at her, unable to bear looking directly at her.

"Although my aunt is willful, she is truly capable. I think that was one of the reasons why the Lord of Mount Tai took her as his disciple in the first place."

How could the Goddess of Mount Tai be someone who has only a name without substance!
