Chapter 12 Black Market

On a winter morning, when it gets light late, the two walked quickly until they were far away from others, where they began to put on makeup.

His face was smeared with dirt from the ground, making it black, and he wore ripped clothes and covered his hair.

Tingting took the bicycle out of her spatial storage. It would have taken a long time to walk to this deserted place, so the two of them put the bicycle away when they were almost at their destination and it was almost dawn.

Upon arriving in the county town, all they saw were single-story houses, with no tall buildings. The two walked to the roadside and observed the pedestrians, who were all thin and hurrying to work.

Unable to find the entrance to the black market, the two decided to move forward and look for individual households further away from the crowds.

The two walked separately to reduce their visibility, both pretending to be suffering from leg problems and hard labor, their faces pale and haggard.

The couple sold grain separately from these households to speed things up, and they agreed to meet in this alley.

Tingting saw a woman dressed without pudding and went up to her, asking in a different accent, "Sister, do you need any food? I have potatoes, cornmeal, sweet potatoes, eggs, rice, and wheat flour."

The woman looked on in surprise: "You really have grain? How much is your rice?"

Tingting said, "1.5 yuan, that's so expensive!" She exclaimed in surprise, "Sister, look at this rice, it's all polished rice."

"Don't even mention whether anyone is selling grain now. Even if there were no food shortages, you wouldn't be able to find such good grain. I don't know when I'll be able to come back again."

"You're right. I'll take all your grains and the eggs you mentioned, including the coarse grains. Come inside."

Seeing Tingting's hesitant look, she said, "Don't be afraid, I'll go get you the money right now. If you stand here, these things will immediately notice you." Tingting nodded and followed her into the house.

This one big customer bought everything she was carrying, which adds up to about 200 yuan.

After selling this one item, she went to a few more courtyards and made over 800 yuan. Then she decided to stop selling. Afraid that someone would notice, she went into a secluded corner, changed her clothes, washed her face, and went to the agreed-upon alley to wait for her husband.

Jianjun, carrying a lot of things, had no space to hide, and was followed by a dark-skinned, thin man with his head down.

He chased after Jianjun and patted him, startling Jianjun so much that his throat almost popped out. "What's wrong with you?" Jianjun asked him.

"I've been watching you for a while now. You're carrying so many big things on your back and so many things in your hands. Is it all food?"

"I don't mean anything by it, I just want to ask if you're selling. I want to buy some grain. We have a lot of children at home, and we're not getting enough to eat every month. Soon we won't be able to eat at all."

“I’m bringing this to my relatives in the countryside. I don’t sell it. Things are alright in our rural area. We have grain stored at home, but if I give it to you, I’ll have to go home and get it for them.”

“Young man, you’re helping me by selling to me, saving my whole family. You have so much grain at home, you can go back and get more. I’ll give you the money. My home is just up ahead.”

Jianjun thought he should go back with him and run away as soon as possible if he lost his fishing gear.

When they arrived at the destination, Jianjun put the things on the ground. The man was overjoyed to see that there was rice inside. "Young man, I'll take all of these things."

“I want all these coarse grains. This place is my home. If you have anything else to sell in the future, come to me. I sold more than 300 of these things in total, and none of them had coupons.”

Jianjun left from here and hurriedly started walking, running into the alley. Tingting saw Jianjun and breathed a sigh of relief.

“Honey, I sold over 1000. How much did you sell? I sold over 300. Yours isn’t good either. Hurry up and go into your space to wash up and change your clothes.”

"You have no idea how dangerous today was. I was being watched as soon as I arrived. I was carrying too much stuff, and I was careless."
