Chapter 15 Cutting the Pork

The whole family took the wild boar inside and decided to store it separately. First, they cut off the head, then cut the boar in half, cut off the pork tenderloin, and then cut off the pork ribs and meat separately.

They removed all the lard to render lard, and everyone worked enthusiastically, because at this time, they dared not even dream of eating pork.

Fortunately, in the cold Northeast, this natural refrigerator prevents the meat from spoiling, allowing us to properly get through the winter and celebrate the New Year.

"Eldest brother, put these pork pieces in our cellar. Second brother, put the fat I removed into the basket. Grandma Guo, please make the arrangements."

"Mother, we know," said Guo's eldest sister-in-law, while Guo's second sister-in-law lit firewood and set up a pot to boil water at the stove.

Prepare to clean the lard. After washing, put the lard in a pot to render. After rendering, take it out, change the water, and continue rendering.

Candles were lit at home, and the pork was cooked while everyone was asleep in the dark. When it got light, the aroma of the pork was so strong that it couldn't be masked.

After rendering the lard and preparing to let it cool, two large pots full of cracklings were ready. All the children in the family were drooling. There was no pork available in the city now, and they dared not even think about eating pork.

The lard was stored in the cellar; there was enough to last a year. The adults and children of the family sat together and enjoyed a delicious meal, while Old Man Guo watched over everyone.

He whispered, "This pork is all thanks to the third son and his wife. None of the kids in the family are allowed to tell anyone. It's a matter of our family's safety. Anyone who dares to say a word won't be coming home."

Everyone nodded. "Don't worry, we'll keep an eye on these kids."

After everyone finished speaking, they began to eat heartily. After finishing, they opened all the windows and doors in the room, and a gust of cold wind made everyone shiver.

It was almost dawn, and I needed to get rid of the smell in the house quickly; the pork smelled so good.

After finishing all that, the Guo family prepared to take a nice nap while they still had food in their stomachs. Around noon, everyone except Tingting and Jianjun went to the toilet.

After all, people who are often hungry can't handle eating meat all of a sudden, which makes one feel a little sad.

In a house quite far from here, Old Mrs. Sun, lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), smelled the air and said to her husband, "Why do I smell pork?"

The old man said speechlessly, "They still eat pork now? These days, it's good enough to have enough to eat. Go to sleep and stop dreaming, you can have anything in your dreams."

After saying that, Grandma Sun lay on the kang and nodded: "Let's eat less, and let our grandson and son eat more. Drink more water when you have nothing to do."

The Guo family sat together: "Father, Mother, do you think we should send some pork to our little sister? I'm worried about how she's doing."

When the old lady heard Tingting say this, she lowered her head and shed tears. They were all her own flesh and blood; how could she not care?

“Last year, we had just returned from the collective farm and were barely able to make ends meet. We had no choice but to marry her off to reduce the number of mouths to feed. We also got our grain and made it through the autumn harvest.”

“Mother, to be honest, my brothers and I are also worried about our little sister, but we can’t explain sending pork. How about Tingting and I go to the city to see if we can exchange it for some grain, and also get some brown sugar and other things for our little sister?” Jianjun said.

“Oh, this is too risky. You two go and see if you can get some grain in return. Don’t take any risks. I just want everyone in the family to be safe and sound.”

"Mother, don't worry. I saved that little brother last time, and I'm confident we can do it this time when I go to exchange grain."

“I’ll give you another fifty yuan to buy more grain, if you can,” Aunt Guo said, looking at him.
