Chapter 21 Wild Animals

Before dawn, before anyone in the family had woken up, the two of them started walking up the mountain.

Thinking they could go early and pick more, the two of them started packing chestnuts and wild fruits into their space when they arrived at the place from yesterday.

Seeing the familiar wild vegetables, they continued to put them into the space. Picking these things was satisfying, and the more they did it, the more energetic they became. After a simple meal, the two of them continued their work for the day.

The two were busy when they heard a noise. Tingting saw two silly roe deer watching them from not far away, motionless. The two exchanged a glance.

They walked straight over with knives in hand. The two didn't run away; they just waited where they were. When the two arrived, they finished them off and put them into their spatial storage.

"Honey, shall we take this back? We've had quite a haul this time."

"Let's put them in the space first and take these chestnuts and wild vegetables home. After all, we didn't bring anything with us right now, so it's hard to explain how we caught the prey. We'll talk about it after we move them out."

After finishing their work, the two sat on the ground to rest for a while. Tingting took out a steaming bowl of spicy hot pot and drinks, and started eating heartily.

In this era, being able to eat spicy hot pot after a long day of work brings a sense of happiness that nothing can replace, making them feel hopeful about life.

After finishing their meal, the two of them used a lighter to clean up all the fruit peels, eggshells, and cola bottles they usually ate in the space while no one was around. After finishing, they saw that it was still early and decided to continue walking inside.

After finishing these tasks, the two of them realized they had nothing else to do and thought they might pick up some more items if they came across them.

As the two walked, they saw what looked like a bird's nest in a tree nearby.

Jianjun climbed up the tree and took down all the bird eggs. "Tingting, look! There are so many bird eggs on this tree!"

“Let’s find more. If we can find more, we’ll put some in our space and take some home for our parents and the kids.”

The two of them searched around and counted them on the ground. There were at least a hundred or so. They put 50 into their storage space and the rest into their baskets to take home.

We've had a very fruitful trip this time. Since it's still early, let's go further in and collect as many things as possible. We'll have to weed the fields in a couple of days, so we won't have much time then.

Tingting was filled with a sense of novelty about all of this. After all, in modern times, the two of them had never experienced going up a mountain. Now, she felt happy and fulfilled to have so many things.

They walked quite a distance and came across a small river. "Honey, there's a river here!" Tingting said to Jianjun.

In this dry season, it's astonishing that a small river has gone undiscovered. Is it because it's too deep and far away, and no one dares to venture deep into it?

Jianjun said to Tingting, "Do you think anyone would dare to venture so deep into these mountains and forests? Not to mention the possibility of animals appearing, there's no way to escape if danger arises."

"We both need to be careful. The presence of water means that animals will come to drink. It's best to be cautious."

Tingting nodded, "Honey, look, I want to go downstairs and see if there are any fish. Haha, I've never cooked a fish before."

"Alright, let's go down and take a look. If there's any danger, we'll quickly return to the space."

Tingting took out the water that the two of them usually used from her space, poured out all the wastewater, cleaned the bucket with the stream water, and then filled it with a lot more stream water and put it into her space.

They took out fishing nets and bait for fishing, and the two began preparing to catch fish.

The two of them put in a lot of effort and scooped out 10 large buckets full of fish and shrimp. They didn't expect that even with so much stuff in there, hardly anyone came.

"Honey, look what's crawling! Oh my god, it's a snake!" Jianjun used all his strength to kill the snake.

The two of them had made quite a haul today. They put their belongings back into their spatial storage and prepared to head back.

We started our journey home along a side path and encountered a rabbit by the roadside. "Honey, how about we hunt this rabbit?" I said. "Do you think we have any equipment? This rabbit runs so fast. Let's hurry home."

Tingting felt it was a pity, but thought she was already very lucky to have met the roe deer and the fish today.

That's the good thing about Northeast China: abundant wild resources. But it's not like you'll never go hungry, because nobody dares to venture deep into the mountains.

After all, wild animals aren't vegetarians. Without tools to subdue prey, and unlike Tingting and Jianjun, they don't have space to hide, making it very difficult for them to get meat.

Every household goes to collect resources on the outskirts of the mountain, so by the time it gets to you, there's not much left.

People are afraid of encountering danger when going up the mountain. If the men in the family encounter danger while going up the mountain, the family will lose its ability to work, and what awaits the widow and her children is a real disaster.
