Chapter 28 Stockpiling Winter Food

The two set off up the mountain before dawn, intending to pick wild vegetables and see if they could find any chestnuts. They didn't plan to compete with the villagers for them.

After all, there's enough food for two people, and leaving some for the villagers will ensure they don't go hungry.

They walked to the small river they had discovered and began their fishing plan.

If I can catch a lot of fish and shrimp, I plan to eat them myself, sell them in the city when I have time, and take them back to my family to improve their lives.

They put a lot of fish food into the water, and the fish swam over in droves. The two of them started using a net to scoop them up and put them in a bucket.

If the buckets are not enough, just store them in the space. Don't catch the small fish, release them back into the wild.

After finishing the harvest, the two of them prepared to eat some grilled lamb skewers, and drink some cola and beer, since they hadn't had such delicious food for a long time during the autumn harvest.

Just as I was about to leave, I saw a pheasant fly to the tree. Using a fishing net, I caught it when no one was looking and put it into my space.

The two of them went to what was originally a cave in high spirits and started eating skewers and drinking beer that had been soaking in the stream water from the space they had just acquired. The chilled taste made them feel really good.

"Honey, we have so many fish in our space, what should we do with them? Should we sell them on the black market?"

"Let's wait until we finish what we need to do on the mountain, and go there before the New Year. We can get a good price for it."

After eating, the two of them went to the place where there were wild fruits and vegetables last time and picked them like crazy. When they got deeper into the area, they saw a lot of hazelnuts and chestnuts. Tingting excitedly hugged a big tree.

"We've struck it rich, honey! So many chestnuts and hazelnuts!"

"Wife, hurry up and come down. I'll fight it up here, and you can just put it in your space. If we have to pick it up ourselves, who knows how long it will take."

The two of them began to continuously collect the items into the space, and by the time they were almost finished, it was nearly dark.

He filled the basket to the brim, then filled eight large bags, took out a pheasant, and headed home.

It was dark and we didn't see anyone. When we got home, our family left us dinner. When my sister-in-law saw the big pheasant, she happily put it away.

As they boiled water to prepare the chestnuts, the family took the bag and, seeing how many chestnuts were inside, the children burst out laughing.

"The elder sister-in-law said to the two of them, 'We also went up the mountain today, but we didn't find this much stuff. You two are really lucky.'"

"That's right, sister-in-law. When she saw two trees, she was determined to pick them. We picked them all day, and when we came back, we saw a big pheasant, haha."

"Jianjun and I are going again tomorrow. I feel like we're lucky, haha. Okay, let's clean up these chestnuts at home tomorrow."

"Have your dad, Jianhua, and Jianguo go and get some sand to preserve the chestnuts so they can last until next spring."

The next day, the two continued to pick chestnuts and hazelnuts in the mountains. They bought up all the wild vegetables, hazelnuts, chestnuts, and wild fruits in the area.

They encountered three large wild boars, killed them, and stored them in their spatial storage. They also discovered a number of rabbits and pheasants. Their luck was truly remarkable.

Back home, the two took five rabbits, three pheasants, and chestnuts and wild vegetables with them.

The whole family was used to it and was storing chestnuts, layering chestnuts with sand, so that they would taste sweet the following year.

The second son took the bag back and dumped the contents in the yard, thinking it was just wild vegetables, chestnuts, and wild fruits. He was so shocked by the sight of so many rabbits and chickens that he was speechless.

The eldest son's wife turned around and asked, "Third son, what have you been doing? So many rabbits!"

"We were lucky enough to run into a rabbit nest and wipe them all out. Then, while looking for wild vegetables, we caught three chickens," Guo Jianjun said, unwittingly showing off his skills once again.

Grandma Guo realized what was happening and asked everyone to boil water so that they could pickle the meat after cleaning it up, so that they would have meat to eat in winter and during the New Year.

Dinner at home was stewed chicken with chestnuts. We started stewing it while everyone was asleep, and also made porridge with small chestnuts. Everyone ate until they were so full they could barely swallow their tongues.

At the dinner table, he instructed his children, "No one is allowed to tell anyone that we're eating meat at home. If anyone does, your parents will tie you up and beat you."

"It's fine if you catch one to eat, but it won't do if you catch this many." The children nodded. Kids these days are sensible at a young age and understand what they should and shouldn't do.
