Grandma Guo and her family were picking wild vegetables and getting ready to eat when they heard someone knocking on the door.
"Who is it? Dongzi, go open the door and see who it is?"
"Okay, Mother, I'll go now."
When Guo Dongzi opened the door, he saw a lot of people standing at the door and was stunned for a moment.
So many years have passed, of course I wouldn't recognize him.
"Who are you?"
"Big brother, don't you recognize me?"
"Brother, is that you? You've all gotten so old, I can't even recognize you. Why didn't you write a letter to let me know when it was sent?"
"I didn't know when I could come back, and I wasn't sure. This time I had the time, so I came back."
"Dongzi, I asked you to open the door, why is it taking so long?"
"Mother, look who's here! Take a good look."
Grandma Guo's eyesight was already a bit blurry. She walked over and looked closely before asking, somewhat uncertainly, "Is it your brother who's back?"
"Mother, it's me. I've come back to see you."
Jianjun's father knelt on the ground, tears streaming down his face.
"Mother, I'm back, I'm finally back."
Grandma Guo was so surprised by this that she almost fainted. Jianjun saw that she was about to collapse.
I rushed over and caught him. If he had fallen to the ground, at his age, it would have been a real problem.
Grandma Guo finally got up after a while, pointed at Jianjun's father, and said, "You're back, you're back! That's great! I've been hoping for you to come back and visit for so many years."
"Your father and I are getting old. We don't even know if we'll still be around when we meet again."
"Mother, where's Father? I don't see him, and where's Second Brother?"
“They’ve already separated the family, but your dad still comes back from working. Dongzi, go and call them over.”
“My son, come up here and let me see you. So many years have passed, and you have grown old.”
"Mom, I'm not old anymore, I already have a grandson. Oh, by the way, let me tell you, this is my wife."
“These are my three sons. I also have a daughter who is pregnant and can’t travel by car for long periods of time, so she couldn’t come.”
"Some of my grandchildren are already married and couldn't come over, but they're all doing very well now."
"I was thinking that now that we have time, we must come back to see you and Dad."
“Oh, I’m sorry for what I did to you back then. You were so young and you had to find your own way to survive.”
"Mom, I know. There was no other way at the time. I'm a parent myself, so I know."
"Didn't you say the third brother was back? Where is he? Let me see him."
"Father, it's me, I'm back, it's me."
Soon everyone arrived, embraced each other, and wept bitterly. So many years, really decades, had passed before they were finally reunited.
"Thank goodness, thank goodness, everyone's here, as long as my family is here, that's all that matters."
"We have to thank you for bringing us all these things during those three years when we were out of food."
"Even the bark was broken. If it weren't for the things that our third son's family mailed to us, we don't know what would have happened."
“You have no idea what the village was like back then, and we didn’t know how much longer it would take. We were eating the grain you sent us sparingly.”
"It's all in the past now. You must have had a tough time back then, still thinking of us. We, as your parents, couldn't help you at all."
“Oh, Dad, what are you saying? Although we had a hard time back then, we relied on the mountains for our livelihood.”
"In addition, Jianjun was also capable, so even though there were many people in his family at the time, he wasn't too sad."
"Well, everything's fine now. Life's better, I don't want to think about the past anymore."
"Yes, that's right. I'll make you something nice to eat now. You all wait here. I need to cook a meal for our third son myself."
"For decades, he hasn't been able to eat the food I cook."
Upon hearing this, Old Man Guo and the others burst into tears again, and it took them half an hour to calm down.
"Alright, alright, if she keeps crying, she won't get any food today."
"Grandma, we also brought a lot of things, including cured meat and sausages. Let's cook some for dinner tonight."
"Yeah, okay."
While Grandma Guo was cooking, she was thinking that there wasn't much good food at home and she didn't know what to make.
But when they saw that Jianjun and the others had also brought a lot of cured meat, they sighed repeatedly.
She said she was coming to see them, but they were actually taking advantage of her visit. However, she is happy that they are doing well now.
Jianjun's family also ate well, and the food at Guo's eldest and second eldest brothers' families wasn't bad either, though they didn't put much meat on their plates.
Looking at my uncle's children, they kept staring at the meat but didn't pick it up. They were all very polite, and these children are well-behaved.
Jianjun started serving food to the children, and after seeing their parents nod, the children began to eat quickly.
They've never eaten so much meat even during Chinese New Year; it smells delicious.
Grandma Guo and Grandpa Guo were also heartbroken, as their son had come home, but they had no good way to entertain him.
It was the child who brought the things himself, and seeing his grandson so eager for them, I felt sad.
Jianjun and the others didn't say anything more and finished their meal in silence.
