Chapter 28 Something destined to fail
Li Yansheng must have been really busy, as he received several phone calls during the short drive. They were probably calls from Hong Kong. He spoke Cantonese, with a few English words sprinkled in from time to time.
The voice of the man was very pleasant to hear in Cantonese, with a slow and steady rhythm. Perhaps out of consideration for the other people in the car, the voice was kept low.
Lin Shutang couldn't help but look at the man in the back seat through the rearview mirror.
He lowered his head to look through the documents while making a phone call: "Send it to me tonight... I can... revise it..."
Lin Shutang didn't understand Cantonese, so she could only make out the general idea of what Li Yansheng was saying, mostly about work. She didn't really care.
After the call ended, the conversation between his assistant and him made Lin Shutang tighten his crossed fingers on his knees.
The assistant asked, "Boss, headquarters asked when it will be finished?"
He said, "Two weeks."
Lin Shutang didn't know if his translation was accurate. If it was, did that mean he might leave in two weeks?
Her lips moved as if she was about to speak, but she was afraid that asking would seem too eager, so she said nothing. After all, they had almost no interactions at all, so asking would seem strange.
Unconsciously, Lin Shutang lost his mind while looking at the man in the rearview mirror. It was not until Li Yansheng's assistant reminded him that he came to his senses at the entrance of the community.
"Ms. Lin, we're here." The iron door was still only half open, and the car stopped in front of the door.
"Oh, okay, thank you!" She put her hand on the door handle. "That's all. I can walk the rest of the way in by myself."
After saying that, without waiting for the other party to say anything else, he opened the door and got out of the car.
Lin Shutang didn't think Li Yansheng hadn't noticed that she was seducing him that day. But afterward, he hadn't made any clear response, neither rejection nor acceptance, not even a glance.
This vague feeling made Lin Shutang puzzled. So, she was gambling, gambling on whether he would open the door and get out of the car, gambling on whether he would offer to take her in.
It’s not that I think I’m important enough for him to care about me, I just want to infer Li Yansheng’s attitude through this incident.
The high beams were on directly facing the gate, but until Lin Shutang stepped over the threshold of the iron gate, the people in the car never spoke again, let alone opened the door and got out.
The slender figure disappeared into the darkness, and the assistant asked, "Boss, are we going back to Luyuan now?"
Li Yansheng said nothing, opened the car door, and got out to light a cigarette. He glanced through the window at the gift bag on the passenger seat, his eyes darkening in the dark night.
"Boss, do you need to send it up to Miss Lin?"
"Need not."
Li Yansheng stood there with one hand in his trouser pocket, his gaze fixed in a certain direction. He took the cake box but not the gift bag. At this moment, she was very clear about the distinction.
The assistant was puzzled. It was pitch black and he didn't know what was good about it.
Not until he followed his boss's gaze did he see the lights on the third floor come on.
Then he was surprised: "Boss, that's not..."
Isn't that Miss Lin's home? So, the boss was just making sure Miss Lin got home safely? Fan Sizhu was confused again. Miss Lin seemed to be interested in the boss, but was the boss interested in her intentionally or not?
Li Yansheng didn't respond. He finished his cigarette, turned around and got into the car: "Let's go back to Luyuan."
These two short words woke Fan Sizhu up.
Yes, even the properties the boss bought casually were all worth hundreds of millions like Luyuan. Compared with the old and dilapidated house that Miss Lin rented, there was a huge difference.
Even if they really meant that, what could they do? The Li family would not agree, and the two of them were destined not to be together.
Furthermore, putting aside their family background, the boss is already 33 years old, and Miss Lin is 23, a full ten-year age difference. As the saying goes, there's a generation gap every three years, and with three generations already between them, the chances of them staying together are slim. The boss doesn't have a history of keeping mistresses, so Miss Lin's efforts must have been in vain.
Li Yansheng is an extremely clear-headed person. He will never waste time doing things that are destined to be fruitless.
