Chapter 111 Angels in White

Jiang Hua opened her eyes and saw a snow-white ceiling. She stared blankly for five minutes before slowly sitting up. She looked around: white walls, white curtains, white sheets and duvet cover. Then she looked at herself—blue and white stripes. Jiang Hua touched her sleeves, muttering, "I...how did I get to a hospital?"

"You're awake!" A young girl in a pristine white nurse's uniform walked in from the ward door carrying a white enamel tray. She placed the tray on the bedside table next to Jiang Hua's bed and said, "You've just woken up, don't run around. Lie down for a while longer." Then she took a thermometer from the tray, shook it, checked the reading, and handed it to Jiang Hua: "Here, take your temperature again. You take it first, I'll be right back."

The nurse helped Jiang Hua put the thermometer under her armpit, then picked up the tray and left the ward.

Jiang Hua had just regained consciousness, her mind still foggy. The thermometer had been tucked under her arm for quite some time before she finally realized what was happening.

"Ah! Right! I think I had a fever before, and then I fainted in the school clinic. Um... I think Ji Kexin brought me to the hospital?" Jiang Hua suddenly thought of Ji Kexin, but couldn't find her anywhere in the ward. "Where's Ji Kexin? Where did she go?"

Just as Jiang Hua was wondering why Ji Kexin wasn't here, the nurse came in again carrying that snow-white enamel tray.

"Please take out the thermometer, let me see it," the nurse said gently to Jiang Hua on the hospital bed, putting down the tray.

"Okay." Jiang Hua obediently reached into her collar, took out the thermometer tucked under her armpit, and handed it to the nurse.

"37.5 degrees Celsius, okay, the fever has completely subsided." The nurse seemed much relieved after looking at the thermometer reading and said to Jiang Hua in a cheerful mood. Then she put the thermometer back on the tray and handed Jiang Hua a disposable cup.

“When you came yesterday, your fever was already 39.7 degrees Celsius, which scared your friend. They gave you a fever-reducing injection, did physical cooling, and you even had an IV drip all night. Finally, your fever has subsided. I heard from your friend that you haven't eaten anything since yesterday morning. Here's a glass of glucose, please drink it first.”

Jiang Hua took the disposable cup from the nurse and felt a little emotional: she really is an angel in white! Just as she brought the disposable cup to her lips, she saw the nurse bend down again and busy doing something on the enamel tray on the bedside table.

"Thank you, nurse." Jiang Hua sipped her glucose from her cup, watching the nurse's busy figure with a puzzled look. Then she saw the nurse straighten up, holding the IV bottle and needle. "Uh!!!"

"Nurse, I...I already have a fever, why...why do I need an injection?" Jiang Hua stammered when she saw that she needed an injection.

"This is an IV drip, not a shot, it won't hurt. You just had a fever, you're still weak, and there's still some inflammation that hasn't cleared up, so you must finish the drip." The nurse said as she hung the IV bag on a hook above the bed specifically for IV bags. Then she inserted one end of the IV tubing into the bag, picked up the other end of the IV set, removed the plastic tubing from the pillow, and flicked the needle until a few drops of fluid appeared. Then she took Jiang Hua's hand and began wiping it with alcohol.

Jiang Hua hesitated a little, trying to pull her hand away, but the nurse held it firmly. Seeing how determined the nurse was to give her the injection, and how gentle she seemed, Jiang Hua gave up resisting.

Just as the nurse was disinfecting Jiang Hua's hand and inserting the IV, Ji Kexin walked into the ward carrying a plastic bag. Upon entering, she saw the nurse wiping Jiang Hua's hand with alcohol, Jiang Hua's eyes closed and her lips bitten, looking like she was trying hard to hold back her laughter. Ji Kexin couldn't help but burst out laughing.

As soon as Jiang Hua saw Ji Kexin return, she exclaimed, "Kexin, you're finally back! Where have you been? I missed you so much! Ah!" Seeing Jiang Hua distracted, the nurse jabbed the needle into her vein, causing Jiang Hua to cry out in pain. Although it didn't hurt much, Jiang Hua, who was always afraid of needles, exaggerated her cry. The nurse, unfazed, smiled, picked up her tray, nodded to Ji Kexin, and left the ward.

Ji Kexin walked to Jiang Hua's bedside, put the plastic bag on the bedside table next to Jiang Hua's bed, and then started taking things out one box at a time.

"You haven't eaten anything since yesterday, but the doctor said you're fine and will be almost recovered after you wake up. I was worried you'd be hungry when you wake up, so I went to buy you something to eat."

"Then why did you buy all the things you like to eat..." Jiang Hua muttered as she looked at the takeout containers that Ji Kexin took out of the plastic bag.

"..." Ji Kexin was speechless for a moment. "...That's not what I like to eat. I just wanted to help you recover from your illness." Ji Kexin forced an explanation.

"Okay, okay, I was just kidding. Thanks this time, Kexin. Oh, right, I want to log into the game. I made an appointment with Gu Yiming, and I can't stand him up."

“No, I asked the doctor, and he said you’re still quite weak. You need to rest for a while before you can use the computer,” Ji Kexin said, setting out the lunchbox and sitting down beside Jiang Hua’s bed.

"Then I'll call Gu Yiming and tell him." Jiang Hua picked up her phone, only to find it was dead. "Kexin, can I borrow your phone for a moment? I need to call Gu Yiming; my phone is dead."

"Okay, sure." Ji Kexin lowered her head and started rummaging through her handbag. After a while, she looked up and said awkwardly to Jiang Hua, "Jiang Hua, I don't think I brought my phone."

"What should we do then?" Jiang Hua was speechless and a little anxious.

"Don't worry, I'll go borrow a phone from a nurse. You should eat something." Ji Kexin said, then turned and left the ward. Jiang Hua breathed a sigh of relief, gratefully watching Ji Kexin's departing figure. It's so good to have a friend like that.

After arriving at the hospital, Gu Yiming looked up Jiang Hua's room number at the service desk and then rushed to Jiang Hua's room, his face full of anxiety.

When he arrived at Jiang Hua's hospital room, the scene before him was that Jiang Hua was wearing a hospital gown, her usually lively and adorable face pale, an IV drip in her left hand, and a disposable cup in her right hand, sipping something. Gu Yiming felt as if his heart had been squeezed tightly by two hands, a sharp pain shooting through his chest. Without a word, he rushed into the room and embraced Jiang Hua on the bed.
