Chapter 32 Remaining Untainted by Mud (8)

Song Qi fell asleep quickly after that, but Meng Yilan didn't sleep much after that. Or she would be startled awake by some noises outside the window when she was about to fall asleep.

There was nothing to it, just rumors.

Hearing the steady breathing beside her, Meng Yilan moved a little closer to Song Qi.

I definitely feel safer when I'm closer.

When Song Qi woke up in the morning, he saw Meng Yilan's face with sleep marks, and the two were very close to each other.

She stared at it for a while, feeling somewhat helpless, then poked Meng Yilan's cheek. Seeing her unconsciously hum in response, she couldn't help but chuckle softly.

Song Qi carefully got out of bed, dressed, tidied up, and left the room.

Just then, a palace maid came in to wake Meng Yilan up. She was a little surprised to see Song Qi up so early.

When Meng Yilan got up, Song Qi had already tidied everything up and was sitting at the table waiting for Meng Yilan to have breakfast.

Meng Yilan was almost in a detached state. Although her every move remained dignified, her eyes were obviously lifeless and her expression was somewhat blank.

Song Qi couldn't help but chuckle again. The other person paused for a moment, glanced at her with a somewhat confused look, and tilted their head at just the right moment.

She regained some of her senses when she sat down to eat breakfast.

"Didn't you sleep well last night?" Song Qi asked.

Meng Yilan yawned and nodded: "I always feel like there's someone swaying outside the window."

"Wasn't I right next to you?"

"So I eventually fell asleep, though I didn't sleep for very long," Meng Yilan said, sipping her porridge.

"I'll go see the Emperor after I finish eating."

Meng Yilan looked up at Song Qi and frowned: "So fast?"

"Yes, some things are better said sooner rather than later." Song Qi nodded.

Meng Yilan sighed softly, "I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight."

"Your Majesty is welcome to sleep on the floor at my place."

Meng Yilan gave Song Qi a reproachful look: "Sleeping on the floor? That's going too far."

"If anyone comes, it will be convenient for Your Highness to hide under the bed."

Meng Yilan blinked: "What you said actually makes some sense."

The palace maids watching: ...

Song Qi smiled, and after finishing his meal, he bid farewell to Meng Yilan and went directly to the Imperial Study.

Surprisingly, the people here trusted her quite a bit and let her in directly. Once inside, no one was watching her, but she could still feel several pairs of eyes watching from the shadows.

When Zhao Zhi finished court, he saw Song Qi sitting there dignifiedly. He pursed his lips and asked, "Why did you come here?"

“Someone went to Fengyi Palace last night, and I stayed there too. Do you think they wanted to kill me, or the Empress?” Song Qi asked.

Zhao Zhi frowned: "Did you catch him?"

“If I get caught, I won’t be alone anymore,” Song Qi said, looking at Zhao Zhi.

Zhao Zhi's expression turned somewhat grim: "It's most likely aimed at you."

"Then only one person went. That's too disrespectful to me." Song Qi took a sip of tea.

"You let him get away with just one person." Zhao Zhi raised his eyelids, looking at Song Qi with a hint of sarcasm.

Song Qi: ...

The system almost laughed; this was the first time in so long that it had seen Song Qi get roasted.

Song Qi had no intention of arguing: "Does Your Majesty have anyone you suspect?"

"What do you think?" Zhao Zhi leaned back in his chair.

"Those two people?" Song Qi didn't say who, but Zhao Zhi knew what she meant.

"That's right, it's been four years, it really should be dealt with. I have to thank them for reminding me this time." Zhao Zhi sneered.

Song Qi raised an eyebrow: "It's good that Your Majesty has such thoughts. I reckon that someone will try to harm me again in the near future, so I'll trouble Your Majesty to send two people to protect Her Majesty the Empress."

"Are you two on good terms?" Zhao Zhi asked Song Qi with some doubt.

"It's alright, why does Your Majesty ask this?"

"It's nothing," Zhao Zhi shook his head, not wanting to say more.

Song Qi didn't intend to ask any more questions. In her opinion, although she didn't understand why Meng Yilan was so kind and friendly to her, she didn't care what she did as long as the other party didn't cross her line.

"By the way, the people from Dacheng sent over a ferret this time. Do you want it? I heard you were quite interested in that tiger last time."

Although Song Qi didn't understand what her interest in tigers had to do with ferrets, she was... quite interested.

"Then Your Majesty, please have someone send it to my palace."

"Okay." Zhao Zhi nodded.

Song Qi bid farewell to Zhao Zhi and returned to her palace. She found that she had spent less time here than she had spent in Fengyi Palace, making everything feel somewhat unfamiliar.

The trees she had bald have been replaced with good ones.

The young eunuch guarding the trees noticed Song Qi's pained expression.

These trees were just replanted; I hope they won't have to be replaced again.

Not long after returning to the palace, Zhao Zhi's rewards arrived, including the ferret and countless jewels.

Standing before Song Qi, Eunuch Yang smiled and said, "The jewelry and other valuables that Da Cheng sent over this time are basically all here. I hope Your Highness likes them."

"Hmm." Song Qi glanced around, but his gaze finally settled on the ferret.

It was held in someone's arms and looked exceptionally well-behaved.

Song Qi stretched out his hand.

"Your Highness, please be careful..." a palace servant reminded her.

As if sensing something, the ferret looked up at Song Qi, and the next second it broke free from the palace servant holding it and pounced on Song Qi.

The scene instantly descended into chaos.

Song Qi remained calm. She grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, pulled it into her arms, and stroked its fur.

The ferret initially tried to resist, but after being petted a few more times by Song Qi, it nestled in her arms, as quiet as a chicken.

The people next to him breathed a sigh of relief.

The palace servant who tamed the animal looked at Song Qi with some surprise. This ferret was very wild and usually wouldn't let anyone touch it except him. He didn't expect it to become obedient so quickly in her hands. He thought that this was General Shao and felt that anything was possible.

"Put everything in the storeroom after you've checked it out," Song Qi said, casually taking a collar from the plate and putting it on the ferret's neck. It looked a bit ugly, so he put it back.

Da Cheng's aesthetic sense is truly unacceptable.

Song Qi carried the ferret back to her room.
