Chapter 42 Remaining Untainted by Mud (18)

Song Qi disliked this feeling very much.

The next morning, the wind was still strong outside, and Song Qi went to see Yatta as usual.

Yata is not doing well. She had a fever again last night and has been in a daze ever since.

The medicine couldn't be forced down my throat.

Yata's face flushed red, her brows furrowed, and she looked very uncomfortable.

Song Qi held Yata's hand, looked at her, and lowered his voice: "We'll be out soon, just hang in there a little longer."

Yata did not respond.

"System, what is Yatta's fate?" Song Qi asked.

The system remained silent for a moment.

"The current plot has deviated by 80% for some reason. According to Yata's original ending, she would poison you, and then the emperor would banish her to the cold palace, where she would die of illness."

"Will she die now?" Song Qi frowned.

The system fell silent again.

Song Qi sighed, somewhat annoyed.

"Your Highness, please go back first. We don't want to pass on your illness to you. If anything happens, someone will inform you," said the palace maid beside her.

Song Qi nodded, let go of Yata's hand, and walked out.

She hated this feeling of being unable to do anything.

"Empress, will you die?" Song Qi thought of Meng Yilan.

"Yes, she will be killed in the chaos when Prince Rui rebels."

Song Qi smirked and said, "Heh."

I'm even more irritable now.

Song Qi went to Meng Yilan's palace.

Meng Yilan was embroidering when she saw Song Qi come in. She waved and smiled brightly, "I'm embroidering a purse. What kind do you like?"

"Whatever you want, I'll accept anything you embroider." Song Qi sat down next to Meng Yilan.

Meng Yilan glanced at Song Qi, a hint of shyness in her eyes: "Well, then I'll do it the way I like. Don't mind it later."

"Hmm." Song Qi nodded, picked up her cup, and said in a low voice, "Yata... doesn't look too good."

Meng Yilan's hand froze. She looked up at Song Qi, a hint of panic in her eyes: "It's just a cold, isn't it?"

“Yeah, it’s just a cold.” Song Qi rubbed his temples. “He had a fever last night and hasn’t woken up yet.”

"Don't worry, nothing will happen."

Song Qi remained silent.

Meng Yilan lowered her head and touched the cloth in her hand that was embroidered with a leaf.

Song Qi sat there all morning, occasionally glancing at Meng Yilan, who was quietly busy with her embroidery.

He met Meng Yilan's worried eyes and looked away.

"Would you like to learn martial arts with me?" Song Qi asked.

"Huh?" Meng Yilan looked at Song Qi, completely bewildered as to how the topic had suddenly shifted to this.

"Isn't the palace unsafe lately?"

“But isn’t martial arts training supposed to start from childhood? It’s no use learning now.” Meng Yilan looked at Song Qi. “Besides, you know I’m a pampered person and can’t handle any hardship.”

Song Qi frowned: "Then you should exercise with me recently. You can't fight, but it would be best if you could run faster."

"It's no use. No matter how fast I run, you people who know light-footed skills will still catch me, won't you?"

Song Qi: ...

There was no way to refute it.

Seeing Song Qi frown, Meng Yilan smiled and said, "It's alright. Everyone has their own fate. If it's not my turn to die, I won't die."

Song Qi frowned even more deeply. This was the kind of thing she hated to hear most: "If you encounter danger, I hope you won't give up the struggle."

Meng Yilan paused, her hand gripping the purse. She looked up at Song Qi, and after a long while, nodded casually: "If we could live, who wouldn't want to?"

The two had lunch and were planning to rest for a while.

Yata's maid stumbled in, looking flustered.

"Your Highness, the princess... the princess..."

Before the man could finish speaking, Song Qi rushed out, using his lightness skill to fly directly through the palace.

When she arrived, Yatta was sitting on the bed, looking quite well.

Some people nearby had already started crying.

The atmosphere in the room was very oppressive.

"What are you crying about?" Song Qi looked at the people crying beside him and suddenly got angry: "If you want to cry, go outside and cry."

This was the first time she had lost her temper since arriving here.

Everyone froze, forcefully suppressing their sobs, and left the room.

Yata smiled at Song Qi: "Why are you so angry today?"

"Did you take your medicine? I can be even more temperamental."

"I'm not drinking anymore, it's too bitter." Yata looked at Song Qi and coughed twice more.

Song Qi frowned: "You can leave in one more day."

“Yes, that’s good.” Yata smiled and glanced outside the door. “I thought I would be stuck here for a long time, but it turns out it’s only been a few months.”

“Yata.” Song Qi frowned.

Yata took a deep breath: "I know that feeling myself, and I know I'm pretty much at that point."

"Thank you."

She wanted to lie down on the bed: "I'm so tired. Ugh, I've always wanted to beat you up, but it seems like I won't have the chance now."

Song Qi looked at her with a dark expression.

Yata slowly lay down and reached out to hold Song Qi's hand. She was speaking with increasing difficulty: "If possible, I hope my knife can be buried with me. There's no need to be sad for me. Shao Jie, please don't cry. You're not good-looking to begin with, and you'll look even uglier when you cry."

"Finally, Shao Jie, be careful... of that empress," Yata said.

The word "Empress" was written with great force.

Yata's voice faded as she looked at Song Qi's face, and finally she slowly closed her eyes.

Meng Yilan stood at the door, her face ashen.

She heard Yata's last words as soon as she arrived.

Meng Yilan clenched her fists tightly, her mind blank.

She couldn't see Song Qi's face, but she could see her gripping Yata's hand slowly tightening.

The palace maids started crying again.

And the crying around them grew louder and louder.

Meng Yilan stood still, motionless.

Song Qi let go of Yata's hand and tucked it into the blanket. She got up and looked back at Meng Yilan.

Meng Yilan opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but her throat felt blocked, and she couldn't say anything.

Song Qi's expression was calm. She walked over and pulled Meng Yilan outside.

Some palace maids who wanted to follow were frightened into staying put by Song Qi's words, "Don't follow us."

Song Qi's mind was also in turmoil; she felt that Meng Yilan shouldn't have done such a thing.

Although she knew very well that there were many two-faced people in the harem, she still refused to believe it.

She felt conflicted.

Meng Yilan stumbled a few steps as Song Qi pulled her along, and was eventually led to a deserted corner of the palace.

“General…” Meng Yilan called out timidly, her eyes filled with helplessness. She tugged at Song Qi’s sleeve tightly.

“I believe whatever you say.” Song Qi looked at her.

Meng Yilan was stunned for a moment, looking at Song Qi in disbelief.

"I..." Meng Yilan was about to speak when her expression turned extremely ugly.

She took a deep breath.

"It wasn't me, it really wasn't me." Meng Yilan spoke each word with great effort, and after she finished speaking, her face turned pale and she fainted.

She was still gripping Song Qi's sleeve tightly, so tightly that her fingertips turned white.

Song Qi caught her and held her in his arms.

Song Qi's system was as quiet as a chicken, and for some reason, he didn't find this situation strange at all.

The plot going wrong? I expected it.

However, Meng Yilan's system had already crashed.

"Are you crazy?"

Meng Yilan remained silent.

"What on earth is wrong with this world? You've completed so many missions, and now you're being given a chance to turn things around, and you're not taking it? Is it because the current punishment is too lenient?"

Meng Yilan remained silent.

"Do you think playing dead will work?"

When Song Qi brought Meng Yilan back, they tried not to attract too much attention along the way.

She placed Meng Yilan on the bed and then summoned the imperial physician, who said she was simply overworked.

Meng Yilan's face was terribly pale, and she didn't wake up until evening.

The room was dark because there were no candles lit.

Meng Yilan raised her hand and grabbed Song Qi's sleeve: "I..."

“I did cause trouble for Yata, but I didn’t kill her.” After Meng Yilan finished speaking, she heard a cold laugh from the system.

"Hmm." Song Qi rubbed his temples. "Are you feeling better now?"

Meng Yilan was taken aback for a moment: "It's alright."

Why did you suddenly faint?

Meng Yilan opened her mouth, then suddenly fell silent. After a long pause, she finally spoke: "Overworked."

Song Qi glanced at her and said, "Then you should get some rest from now on."

Meng Yilan slowly moved closer to Song Qi, hugged her waist from behind, and leaned against her back.

After a while, she quietly suppressed her sobs.

Song Qi didn't move, just waited for her to finish crying.

Are you hungry?

"A little."

"I'll have someone serve the food." Song Qi pulled Meng Yilan's hand away and wiped her face with a handkerchief.

Meng Yilan's eyes remained fixed on Song Qi until she was hidden behind the screen.

"Host, I suggest you follow the plot carefully."

"But I don't want to."

"She's just a string of code. Why waste our time on a string of code?"

Meng Yilan pursed her lips: "Really? But I feel like she's a person."

"Wake up! Didn't you perform perfectly before?" The system still didn't understand where the problem lay.

Song Qi returned and glanced at Meng Yilan, who was sitting on the bed in a daze: "I asked the kitchen to make something light."

"Hmm." Meng Yilan nodded, snapping out of her reverie.

"I asked Consort Sun for help this afternoon."
