Chapter 102 Action
Su Xia is a man of action who was brought up, reckless and optimistic.
It’s all thanks to Su Xiaojuan’s cultivation.
When she was five years old, Su Xiaojuan was too busy in the factory to take care of her.
For a while, Su Xia was nicknamed by the little boys in the kindergarten. They surrounded her and called her fat woman and little fat pig every day. Little Su Xia was depressed for most of the week. When her favorite chicken wings were placed on the table, she swallowed her saliva with greed but resisted the urge to reach out for them. She bit her thumb and cried.
Children of this age already have a vague sense of shame.
No matter what her mother asked, Su Xia pursed her lips tightly, with her big red eyes, and said nothing, not eating a single bite of food.
Su Xiaojuan was anxious, so she took the child to the pediatric department of the hospital to register, visited the kindergarten teacher at her home, and talked to all her friends who had children, asking them one by one what to do.
He even put aside past grudges and called his grandmother, whom he hadn't contacted for many years.
That year, Su Xiaojuan's career was just taking off. She didn't want to get married and didn't even consider it. The mother and daughter dressed up smartly every day, lived in a nice house, drove a nice car, and sent Su Xia to an international kindergarten.
There was prejudice against women like Su Xiaojuan in her hometown. Her fellow villagers exaggerated her good life and somehow the rumor spread that Su Xiaojuan was doing shady business in the city.
Regardless of whether it was true or not, Su Xia's grandmother felt ashamed and even more disgusted with her daughter. She was in a bad mood as soon as she answered the phone.
"I thought you had suddenly come to your senses and were ready to come back to admit your mistakes and fulfill your filial duties. For so many years, your father and I have been living on coarse food, and you got so anxious when the little girl missed a few bites of meat. How come you never thought of you, your mother?"
"Juanzi, you're amazing! I told others that my daughter blocked me and wouldn't let me see her photos or send her messages, but no one believed me."
Grandma's voice on the other end was resentful, yet leisurely, as if she was basking in the sun at her doorstep. "The last time I saw that girl of yours, it was your aunt's sister who came to pay New Year's greetings. She has your circle of friends."
"They said she doesn't eat, but I don't see that at all. What girl would eat a whole plate of pork ribs by herself? She's harder to feed than other boys. Her little hands are as fat as a pig. She should eat less and lose some weight."
Su Xiaojuan's temples throbbed. "Whose five-year-old is losing weight? Growing up means you get hungry easily."
"Yoyo, you're the only one who's given birth to a child, right?"
Grandma was disdainful. "Girls want to be pretty. They just grow up and suddenly become interested in beauty. They know to eat less without anyone telling them. You stopped eating when you were a child too."
"If you insist on asking me what folk remedies I have, then I can only tell you that children should not be spoiled when it comes to eating. If you are really worried about this and can't sleep, then just be hard-hearted and give them a couple of spankings and scoldings, and everything will be fine."
The phone was on loudspeaker, and Su Xia was standing by the door frame holding the little rabbit doll, not daring to say a word.
The old lady on the other end of the phone was a stranger; she was simply frightened by the serious look on my mother's face.
She mustered up the courage to speak, "Mom, I..."
Su Xiaojuan hasn't fought with her yet.
Normally, she would cry for a long time if she fell down. Being hit must hurt so much. She was willing to say anything as long as they didn't hit her.
Before she could finish her sentence, Su Xiaojuan hugged her, held her tightly on her legs, and rested her head on her chubby little shoulder.
The existence of her daughter seemed to give Su Xiaojuan infinite strength.
She took a deep breath and spoke calmly, "When I was little, I didn't eat because you wouldn't let me. All the good meat and vegetables went to Lijun, and when it was my turn, I was left with only fish tails and chicken racks. If I ate a few more bites, you would knock on my bowl and laugh at me."
"Now I accept all the hardships I have to endure, just so my daughter can live comfortably, without having to look at anyone's face or please anyone, and can eat as much as she wants and grow as tall as she wants."
"You said she was fat because you were also a skinny girl who grew up in poverty. It's not enough that you've tortured me, but you can't even stand a child this old. You're jealous."
Grandma was blocked by her string of words, and her voice became more and more shrill, "...To say such things to your own mother, do you still have any shame?"
"I think what they say is right. You've been doing some shady things in the city, and you've let your heart run wild! Go to the countryside and ask if there's any daughter who's made a mistake like you, and whose family is as magnanimous as your father and I. If they want to talk to their parents, they have to come back and kowtow first."
The old lady spoke with a rural accent, and little Su Xia didn't understand everything, but she knew that her grandmother made her mother sad.
She raised her hand and gently touched Su Xiaojuan's hair.
Su Xiaojuan turned down the volume on her phone.
Several generations have passed, and even across classes and twenty years, the situation the girls face is surprisingly similar.
Her chest heaved violently, and for a moment she seemed to empathize with the daughter in her arms and had a plan on how to deal with this matter.
"My face is on my own body, I don't need you to give it to me. Just think of me asking you today because I'm so anxious."
"You and my father are generous, but it's a pity that you didn't give me the gift of generosity. I have always held grudges since I was a child and I don't have the slightest bit of magnanimity."
She cut the Gordian knot and said, "From now on, if you two have any problems, or if Lijun has any problems, you must kowtow to me before asking for help. If it's someone's problem, then kowtow. Otherwise, don't contact me."
The person on the other end kept saying "you" for a long time but didn't say a complete sentence, so Su Xiaojuan hung up the phone first.
She turned her head and met her daughter's confused eyes. She said firmly, "Someone said you're fat?"
Xiao Suxia nodded.
Su Xiaojuan asked again, "Are they very thin themselves?"
Su Xia thought for a moment and gestured with her hands at the arms of the boys. "So thin, so thin, as thin as a bamboo pole."
Su Xiaojuan raised her eyebrows, "Do you think that looks good?"
Su Xia shook her head, "It doesn't look good."
"That's it. I don't even need to see you to know that you are much prettier than them. Is there any girl in Jiangcheng who is more lovely than you?"
Su Xiaojuan held her round shoulders and squeezed them gently twice. "They say you are fat because they are thin and weak, and they always want to bully you. They are afraid that you will become too strong and stronger than them in the future."
What about being a quiet lady, or having an easy time getting married in the future? Su Xiaojuan doesn't believe in that at all.
She stretched out her hands and placed them in front of Su Xia.
"If you think that if you listen to them and don't eat, you'll be as skinny as a chicken in the future and no one can beat you, and you'll be happy when they occasionally praise you for being beautiful and cute, grab my left hand."
"If you want to be stronger than them all, no one dares to bully you, go wherever you want, protect whoever you want, hold your mother's right hand."
The afternoon sun was warm and the clock in the restaurant was ticking.
Su Xia bit her lip and thought for a while. Without much hesitation, she stretched out a sweaty little hand and held Su Xiaojuan's right hand.
That day's lunch ended with Su Xia sitting back in the children's chair with a proud look on his face, eating a full bowl of chicken wings and two grilled lamb chops.
