Chapter 125 Living Treasure
After washing the dishes, Lin Heng had no sense of being a guest at all. He collapsed on the sofa in the living room very naturally, took out his mobile phone and started typing. He was probably reporting his itinerary to his friends, with a smug smile on his face.
My mother came out after cleaning the kitchen. Seeing his arrogant look, she didn't say anything. Instead, she brought a plate of washed fruit and placed it in front of him: "Xiao Heng, have some fruit."
"Thank you, Auntie! You are so kind!"
Lin Heng immediately put down his phone, smiling sweetly, picked up a grape and put it in his mouth, not forgetting to praise, "Mmm! So sweet! Auntie, the fruits you buy are better than those sold outside!"
My mother couldn't help but smile again when he praised her, then shook her head and went to do other things.
I have come to realize that this kid Lin Heng is simply a killer of middle-aged and elderly women (and my dad).
Lin Yan looked at his brother who had taken the initiative and gave me a helpless look, which probably meant: See, I told you that he can quickly adapt to the environment wherever he goes.
I held back my laughter and mouthed back: It’s up to you.
Sleeping at night became a problem.
There are only two bedrooms in my house. Usually my parents have one and I have another. When Lin Yan comes, he naturally sleeps with me.
Now there is Lin Heng...
I was just wondering whether to let him sleep on the sofa or on the floor when Lin Heng spoke first. He blinked and looked at my parents: "Uncle and aunt, I can sleep on the sofa! I sleep quietly and don't take up space!"
It sounds like we'd really let him sleep on the sofa.
"How can that be!" My dad was the first to object. "You're a guest, how can I let you sleep on the sofa? So, let Xiao Rui and Lin Yan squeeze in, and you sleep in Xiao Rui's room!"
I:"……"
Dad, you are really good at making arrangements.
Lin Yan didn't have any objection, he was happy to squeeze in with me anyway.
Lin Heng, on the other hand, rolled his eyes and immediately said, "No, no, no! Uncle, I don't dare disturb my brother and sister-in-law's world of two! How about this, I see the sofa in the living room is quite wide, I can sleep on it! Really! I used to sleep in a sleeping bag when I went camping, but this sofa is much more comfortable than a sleeping bag!"
He was firm in his attitude and repeatedly said that he just liked sleeping on the sofa and was comfortable.
Finally we couldn't persuade him and had to agree.
My mother brought clean bedding and pillows and made the sofa soft and comfortable.
Lin Heng looked at the arranged "bed" and was quite satisfied. He said with a smile: "Very good! This is my temporary palace!"
Before going to bed, this kid actually took out the gifts he brought for us from his huge suitcase.
The one for my dad was a tea set that looked very valuable, and the one for my mom was a soft silk scarf in an elegant color.
What was given to Lin Yan and me were two of the latest game consoles, in limited edition colors.
"I saw it while passing by the mall and bought it because I thought it suited you guys."
He said it lightly, but it was obvious that he had put a lot of thought into it.
My parents kept declining, saying it was too expensive.
Lin Heng said sweetly: "Uncle and aunt, this is a little gift from me. If you don't accept it, you are looking down on a junior like me!"
Well, now that things have come to this, I can only accept it.
My father touched the exquisite tea set and couldn't let it go. He looked at Lin Heng with even more satisfaction.
My mother put on a scarf, looked in the mirror, and there was a smile in her eyes.
I was also very touched. This kid looks carefree, but he is actually very thoughtful.
After washing up, everyone went back to their rooms.
Lin Yan and I squeezed into my not-so-big bed.
"Your brother... is such a funny guy." I nestled in Lin Yan's arms and couldn't help but sigh.
Lin Yan chuckled softly, tightening his arms. "Now you know how 'lively' my childhood was, right? The house was always buzzing with chatter."
"I can see that," I poked his chest with a smile, "but it's good too. The house is a little more lively and vibrant. Mom and Dad look especially happy today."
"Well," Lin Yan's voice softened, "He does have this ability."
"Go to sleep," Lin Yan kissed my forehead, "That kid will definitely make trouble tomorrow, so you need to stay alert to 'deal' with him."
Sure enough, Lin Yan was right.
Early the next morning, just as it was getting light, I was awakened by the noise in the living room.
It seemed to be the sound of a video game console, accompanied by Lin Heng's suppressed exclamation of excitement.
I woke Lin Yan up in a daze: "...your brother... is here so early?"
Lin Yan frowned and opened his eyes. He listened to the noise outside and sighed helplessly: "He is just like this, as energetic as a husky."
We got up and went out to take a look, wow!
Lin Heng was already sitting on the sofa in high spirits, holding his game console and playing with great concentration!
When he saw us coming out, he greeted us without even looking up: "Good morning, brother and sister-in-law! This game is so fun!"
My mother poked her head out of the kitchen and said with a smile, "Xiaoheng got up really early. Breakfast will be ready soon."
After breakfast, Lin Heng became even more restless and clamored to take us out to play, saying that he wanted to play the role of a good host - even though he was just a guest.
"Uncle and aunt, are there any fun places nearby? Somewhere with nice scenery, or a street with special snacks would be fine!" He asked my parents excitedly.
My dad thought for a moment and said, "There's a new wetland park east of the county town. I heard it's pretty good. As for snacks... there's a night market in the central square at night. It's quite lively."
"Okay! Then let's go to the park in the morning and the night market in the evening!" Lin Heng made the decision and looked at me and Lin Yan eagerly. "Brother, sister-in-law, will you accompany me?"
How could I say no? Looking at his eyes, which were extremely similar to his brother's and full of expectation, I could only nod.
So, Lin Heng dragged us across almost half of the county for the entire day.
In the wetland park, he was like a hyperactive child, running to row a boat, then flying a kite (which he had just bought), and he insisted on taking various "tourist photos" for us, directing us to pose, full of energy.
Lin Yan and I followed him and were exhausted, but seeing how happy he was and the sunshine shining on his bright smile, it seemed as if all the troubles disappeared, and it felt worth it.
When we arrived at the night market in the evening, we also arrived at Lin Heng’s home turf.
He ate from one end of the street to the other, and was full of curiosity about all kinds of snacks. He wanted to try a little of everything, and then chattered about which one was delicious and which one was average.
He also bought a lot of snacks for my parents to take back.
Lin Yan followed behind him, mainly responsible for paying and carrying bags, with a helpless look of "I knew it would be like this", but there was indulgence in his eyes.
When he got home, Lin Heng was still full of energy and asked my parents to share the photos and videos he had taken, which made them laugh out loud.
In the evening, he rushed to wash the dishes (although my mother stopped him firmly this time), and then curled up on the sofa to continue playing games.
Before going to bed, he suddenly said to me: "Sister-in-law, your family is so nice."
I was stunned: "What's wrong? You're talking about this all of a sudden?"
He sat cross-legged on the sofa, his expression unusually serious. "It's just so warm, and feels like home. The food is delicious, and the uncles and aunties are super nice and fun to talk to."
He paused, his voice lowering a bit, "It's not like my house, which is so big and sometimes empty."
My heart softened and I sat next to him: "Are you homesick?"
"Not really..." He scratched his head, "I just think it's nice to have a lively party like this. He's... pretty lucky."
When he said this, there was a hint of envy in his eyes.
I suddenly understood that his "noise" these days might not only be due to his lively personality, but also an eager desire for and integration into the family warmth.
"You can come visit more often in the future," I patted his shoulder, "My parents will definitely welcome you. Next time... ask your dad to come along?" I asked tentatively.
Lin Heng's expression instantly became a little unnatural, his eyes wandered for a moment, and he said vaguely: "... Let's talk about it later. He's... busy."
On the third day, Lin Heng was about to go back.
My parents were reluctant to let him go, so they stuffed him with a lot of local specialties and told him to be careful on the road and come visit often.
Lin Heng agreed to all of them, smiling very obediently.
After sending him to the car, Lin Yan ruffled his brother's hair and said, "Drive slowly. Send a message when you get home."
"I know, brother. Why are you more nagging than mom?" Lin Heng said with disgust, but he smiled happily.
He looked at me again, suddenly opened his arms and gave me a tight hug: "Sister-in-law! I'm leaving now! Thank you for your hospitality! Come back for dinner next time!"
I was stunned by the hug, then smiled and patted his back: "You are welcome anytime."
Watching his handsome sports car drive out of the community and disappear around the corner, the house suddenly became much quieter, and it actually made people feel a little... deserted.
Lin Yan and I looked at each other and smiled at the same time.
"It's quiet now." Lin Yan said.
"Yeah," I nodded and took his arm, "but...it seems a little too quiet?"
Lin Yan looked down at me with a playful look in his eyes: "What? Are you thinking about that 'Husky' right now?"
"Fuck you!" I laughed and hit him.
Although Lin Heng's arrival was like a whirlwind, causing chaos in the house, it also brought unprecedented excitement and laughter.
This liveliness seemed to quietly bring more smiles to my parents' faces, and also gave Lin Yan and I more warm topics about family and kinship.
