Chapter 11 Too Bad

Chapter 11 Too Bad

When the notice of the metalworking internship came out, I didn’t take it too seriously.

It’s just a matter of changing the place to sharpen the hammer and solder the circuit board. Just follow the main group.

The only small episode was the dormitory list - because of the student number order, Lin Yan and I were assigned to different dormitory buildings, separated by half of the internship base.

"Tsk, what a coincidence," I scratched my head and muttered to myself as I looked at the list. I felt a little disappointed. After all, I was used to having this person around. Someone to hold a seat for me when I ate, someone to guide me when I got lost, someone to sneak around with me at night... cough. But it was just a little bit!

What's this little bit of loneliness? I, Chen Rui, am a tough guy who can happily stay in the dormitory alone for a week!

What’s more, Lin Yan just bought me the latest Switch two days ago, and it’s full of cartridges!

This week of metalworking internship is simply a paid gaming carnival week! Thinking of this, I happily hummed a tuneless song.

However, this happiness only lasted until the moment I caught a glimpse of Lin Yan's expression.

This guy, ever since he found out about the dormitory assignment, his usually expressionless face darkened at a speed visible to the naked eye.

It wasn't anger, nor was it sadness, but rather a kind of... depression. A thick, almost condensed depression enveloped him.

Normally a gentle and polite man, he exuded an icy aura of "stay away, or you'll die" during those few days. Even the most obtuse Lao Si came over and whispered to me, "Brother Rui, what's wrong with Brother Yan? His face is as black as the bottom of a pot. Has he been pestered by some blind pervert again?"

I laughed dryly and said vaguely, "Maybe... there's something wrong with the experimental data?"

But in my mind, I knew exactly what was going on: What data issue?! It was clearly caused by the dorm split! This person's possessiveness and control were becoming increasingly outrageous! What's wrong with living apart for a few days? Is that really that serious?

On the first day of my metalworking internship, I spent the entire day fighting with iron lumps and welding guns in the workshop. When I returned to the temporary dormitory, I felt like my bones were about to fall apart.

The new dorm room is eight people, and while it's lively, it's also quite noisy. After showering, I climbed onto the creaky upper bunk, ready to soothe my tired body and soul with my new Switch. As soon as I pulled out the console—

There were two light knocks on the dormitory door, and then it was pushed open a crack.

Lin Yan's face, still expressionless but with exceptionally deep eyes, appeared at the door.

He glanced around, his eyes fixed on me on the upper bunk, and said simply, "Chen Rui, come out for a moment."

Me: “???” Under the curious gazes of my roommates, I gritted my teeth and climbed out of bed and followed him to the end of the corridor.

"What?" I rubbed my sore arm.

"Come with me." He said briefly, took my wrist and walked downstairs.

"Where are we going? Back to the dormitory, brother. I'm so tired!" I tried to struggle.

"Let's go to the hotel." Lin Yan kept walking, his tone leaving no room for doubt.

"Wine...hotel?!" I almost broke my voice and staggered when he pulled me. "Is it that serious, Lin Yan?! We're just staying apart for a few days! Do you have to go and get a room?!" This move is too bold!

Lin Yan stopped and turned, the dim corridor light illuminating his sharply defined face. He looked at me, his brows furrowed slightly, and said seriously, "As for that. The dormitory environment is awful."

“…” I was almost laughing because of him!

Too bad? In the past, my dormitory was as messy as a garbage recycling station, with socks flying everywhere and instant noodle bowls piled up like a mountain. He would always help me clean up without batting an eyelid, and at most frowned and said a few words of disdain.

Although this makeshift dorm is a bit noisy, it's at least clean and tidy! He actually said "too bad"?!

"Lin Yan, can you please be more careful when you're making up stories?!" I growled in a low voice, "Do you believe this excuse?"

Lin Yan looked at me silently, his deep eyes seemed a little stubborn under the light, even... with a little subtle grievance?

He tightened his grip on my wrist and lowered his voice: "Come with me, okay?"

Looking at him like this, like a large canine that clearly wanted to monopolize the bone but was afraid of making its owner unhappy, most of the anger and confusion in my heart were inexplicably released.

Forget it... After all, he's Lin Yan. I can't bear to see him suffer like this.

"...Okay, okay." I sighed resignedly, "Wait until I get my bag back."

The hotel is not far from the internship base and the environment is pretty good.

But when I swiped the room card to open the door and saw the eye-catching, spacious, and soft king-size bed that seemed so soft that you could sink into it, my scalp still exploded instantly!

Damn! Isn't this progressing a bit too fast?!

Although we have kissed, hugged, and done many "unspeakable" things in the toilet cubicle, sleeping in the same bed... this is another dimension of intimacy!

Moreover, a single man and a single woman (?), staying in the same room, a hotel room with a double bed... the atmosphere and the hint are simply too obvious!

Lin Yan was very natural. He put his bag away, took out his laptop and toiletry bag, and was ready to set up camp.

I was like a rabbit that had strayed into a wolf's den, my whole body stiff and I didn't know where to put my hands and feet.

As I showered, the hot water gushed over my head, my mind still whirring: How did I end up in a hotel with him? How did we end up in the same bed? What was going to happen next?

After taking a shower, I wrapped myself in the hotel's thick white bath towel and moved out reluctantly.

His hair was dripping wet, and water droplets slid down his neck and into the edge of the bath towel. Lin Yan was leaning against the headboard, looking at his computer, the light from the screen reflecting his focused profile.

Hearing the noise, he looked up.

The air seemed to freeze.

I could clearly feel my cheeks rapidly heating up and my heart beating so fast that it seemed like it was about to jump out of my throat.

Lin Yan's gaze behind the lens seemed to carry a real warmth, sliding from the ends of my dripping hair, across my bare shoulders, and finally stopping near my waistline wrapped in a bath towel...

That look was no longer the usual calmness or disdain, but an undisguised focus filled with scrutiny and a deep longing, like a hunter locking onto his prey.

Shit! This feels so weird! So... dangerous!

A huge sense of shame and an unprecedented throbbing mixture of tension and anticipation swept over me.

I moved to the bed almost at the same time, lifted the quilt, and quickly got in like a loach. I wrapped myself tightly in the quilt, leaving only my wet head exposed, and then closed my eyes tightly.

Pretend to be asleep! Yes! Pretend to be asleep! As long as I fall asleep quickly enough, the embarrassment and the unknown won't catch up with me! This is the only coping strategy I can think of!

The room was very quiet, with only the faint sound of the air conditioner and my own heartbeat like a drum.

I could hear the soft click of Lin Yan closing his laptop, the sound of his footsteps as he got up and went to the bathroom, and the sound of water splashing inside...

Time becomes extremely long.

The water stopped running. The bathroom door opened. Steady footsteps approached the bed. The mattress sank slightly—he lay down.

I held my breath and tensed all the muscles in my body, trying to maintain the illusion of "sound sleep", but my eyelids couldn't help but tremble slightly.

It's over! Don't I know what my acting skills are? Even a three-year-old can tell I'm pretending to be asleep!

I slapped myself in my heart: Chen Rui, you idiot! This trick is terrible!

Just when I was thinking crazy in my heart and wished I could disappear from the spot, a refreshing and pleasant scent of shower gel mixed with his unique scent approached.

The warm breath gently brushed over my ears and cheeks, carrying a slight moisture.

Then, I heard a very light, very low, and slightly breathy laugh.

That laughter was like a feather scratching my heart, making me tremble all over.

Then, Lin Yan's unique, somewhat lazy and magnetic voice rang close to my ears, with undisguised teasing and understanding:

Two words, light and airy, but like two bullets, they accurately shattered all my clumsy disguises.
