Chapter 92: Meeting Vermouth
Amuro Toru was originally following Hatori Yuiichi, but when he answered a phone call, he turned around and realized he had lost him. When he found the Hatori brothers again, they were standing together against the wall, and no one knew what they were doing.
Amuro Toru walked over and asked, "Why are you here?"
Hatori Yuiichi said, "Senior went to see the pandas. We are waiting for him here."
Amuro Toru's eyes widened slightly. How could this be possible?!
He showed a hint of envy, then asked doubtfully: "Then why don't you go together?"
Yuiichi Hatori rubbed his brother's head and said, "Shizueji doesn't like the smell of disinfectant." Even when they stood outside the door, Shizueji Hatori covered his nose with his hands.
Amuro Toru's eyebrows twitched. Afraid of the experimenters and dislike of disinfectant, it seemed this younger brother had been exposed to similar environments before.
He was still trying to get some information out of them when he suddenly heard hurried footsteps.
Otani Hui ran over with several people, her face full of anxiety.
Amuro Toru and Hatori Yuiichi immediately stood up straight and asked, "What happened?"
"It's an emergency." Otani Hui was concerned about the panda cubs and didn't have time to explain. However, he still remembered that no one could enter the breeding room at will, so he refused Amuro Toru's help.
After a while, the park security and stationed police also came over. With the help of the researchers, they performed a simple disinfection and then followed them into the interior.
Amuro Toru and Hatori Yui looked at each other in bewilderment.
"I'm afraid there's been another accident," Hatori Yui said in a deep voice. He had thought today's shocks were enough, but he didn't expect another one.
Toru Amuro: "Again?"
Hatori Yui pursed his lips. It's best not to let anyone know about Senior's unlucky physique.
Only after the police dragged Moriqiu Iro away did Higashino Xi come out with a satisfied look on his face.
Seeing his beaming smile, Hatori Yui felt relieved. It seemed the senior was not in danger.
Higashino Hi took the initiative to tell the whole story, and Amuro Toru's face suddenly changed.
If word got out that researchers were secretly storing panda blood and testing drugs on pandas, it would definitely cause a diplomatic incident! Furthermore, the Japanese love pandas, so if that happened, they would be criticized by people from both countries, and perhaps even more countries.
Amuro Toru frowned. Never mind. Diplomatic issues weren't his responsibility, and he couldn't think of any solutions. Let the Ministry of Foreign Affairs worry about it.
Dong Yexi hadn't expected it to be so profound. He was still savoring the feel of the panda cub. Alas, the person in charge immediately contacted Otani Hui after calling the police. They arrived too quickly. He only rubbed it for a few minutes before Tuanzi was taken away.
He originally wanted to adopt the cub, but Otani Hui told him that the panda cub belonged to China and they had no right to decide. Furthermore, the cub would be sent back to China after its first birthday. Dong Yexi had no choice but to give up.
Speaking of China, he suddenly wanted to go back to China to take a look. He didn't know what the difference was between this world's China and his own.
Because this incident is sure to attract international attention, the zoo director came out and pleaded with Higashino Hiroshi to keep it secret for the time being. Once the police have thoroughly investigated the matter, they will make it public and apologize.
Higashino Xi: ...You came out a little late.
When the person in charge saw the expressions of the others, he knew that they had already found out, so he changed the number of people he pleaded with to four.
Everyone agreed to keep it secret for now. However, Toru Amuro said sarcastically, "Please conduct a thorough investigation. There may be many people with malicious intentions hiding out there."
When the person in charge heard this, sweat began to form on his forehead. He nodded repeatedly: "We will definitely rectify and rectify it!"
The person in charge followed them back to the lounge and informed everyone that an accident had occurred and that they could only stay here for the day.
The children looked reluctant when the group was sent away.
Ayumi Yoshida said regretfully: "I really want to see the baby panda drinking milk!"
Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya comforted him, "There's nothing we can do. The baby panda was too tired after the physical examination and has been sent back to sleep." This was the excuse given by the person in charge.
"It's still a baby after all." Kojima Genta nodded. "Babies sleep most of the day."
Although Edogawa Conan appears to be indifferent, he feels a little regretful in his heart. Who can resist a cute panda cub?
However, he vaguely noticed that Amuro Toru seemed angry.
Did something else happen while they were out?
So, the curious baby Edogawa Conan went up to Amuro Toru on the way back and asked him what was wrong.
Toru Amuro concealed his emotions and shook his head to indicate that he was fine, just a little tired.
Conan Edogawa suddenly remembered that Toru Amuro hated Shuichi Akai, and they had been together all day, so it would be strange if he was in a good mood.
In order not to make Toru Amuro feel worse, Conan Edogawa stopped asking questions.
In fact, Amuro Toru has become a little desensitized to Akai Shuichi, or more accurately, to the shell of "Okiya Subaru". After all, the frequency of their encounters is increasing, and if he gets angry every time they meet, he might get furious.
After many attempts at emotional control, he saw that Subaru Okiya was already able to "ignore" him very well.
Just like today, when they first met in the morning, he was angry for a while, then he "forgot" about him and focused all his attention on the two Hatori brothers.
After a day of observation, he reaffirmed that the Hatori brothers were ordinary people. While visiting the breeding center, he discovered that Hatori Shizuji might have been raised in a laboratory. He didn't know that buses required coins and cards, that tickets needed to be verified at check-in, that smart trash cans existed, or that navigation apps existed... He seemed disconnected from the world, his gaze on everything was filled with curiosity.
Toru Amuro originally thought that Shizue Hatori was also a genius scientist or something like that, but after recalling his behavior throughout the day, he found that although this child had basic common sense, he knew very little and did not show any intelligence.
And he is in very poor health.
Amuro Toru felt that a cold-blooded organization like this would definitely not bother to keep a sickly person unless he was valuable. Since he was not a genius, his value might only be reflected in his physical strength.
Having been undercover in the organization for so many years, he certainly knew they had a laboratory. Since they were conducting experiments, they needed samples. Besides animals, the subjects for drug experiments were humans. He didn't believe the organization had any humanity, so he assumed the utmost malice.
Perhaps Hatori Yui was also an experimental specimen, but because he had other value, he was transferred out of the laboratory. Once he made some contribution, his brother was released.
After much thought, this guess is the most likely one.
Once you have a guess, you need to verify it.
So, Toru Amuro came to Vermouth's temporary residence late at night to find out the truth.
When Vermouth opened the door and saw him, she raised her eyebrows in surprise: "You actually came to see me on your own initiative? What a rare guest~"
She invited Toru Amuro into the house and offered him a glass of water. She herself held a glass of red wine and said, "I have nothing but water and wine here. But since you must have driven here, I won't offer you a drink."
She crossed her legs and asked, "Tell me, what do you want from me?"
Even though Vermouth was wearing only a silk slip dress, looking lazy and alluring, Toru Amuro's eyes remained calm. He said, "A few months ago, you asked me to forge his identity and student status so that a high school graduate named Hatori Yuiichi could be found in a remote town. His parents are both deceased, and his only relative is an aunt in Tokyo."
Vermouth took a sip of wine and said, "Why do you bring this up?"
Amuro Toru smiled slightly. "Now this student who only had one relative has a younger brother named Hatori Shizuji. Shouldn't I, the person in charge, ask about this? What if someone else finds out?"
Vermouth frowned for a moment, then quickly recovered.
"What should we do with this younger brother? Should we forge it again?" asked Toru Amuro.
Vermouth shook her head: "No, he can't stay long."
"Is this okay?" Amuro Toru pretended to be troubled. "Don't you know that Higashino Higashi is already out? He went to school to find Hatori Yuiichi on the day he came out, which clearly told everyone that they were dating. Do you think the Higashino family won't investigate Hatori Yuiichi? If they did, they would find that someone who should have no relatives suddenly had a younger brother. Wouldn't that be equivalent to telling them that Hatori Yuiichi's identity is in doubt?"
"As an intelligence officer, I can't make such a huge mistake." He said with a dissatisfied expression, "If you guys just add to his character, you should at least tell me."
Vermouth sighed and said, "This is not my fault. I'm afraid it was Gin who brought them out."
Amuro Toru's fingers twitched slightly, and he asked curiously, "Bring him out? Is it the same place where Hatori Yui was before?"
Vermouth glanced at him and said, "Are you trying to trick me?"
Amuro Toru shrugged. "Even if they're not brothers, they're definitely acquaintances. But the younger brother isn't in good health, so they don't necessarily stay together."
Vermouth said, "Not completely together." She seemed to have given up on keeping the secret and revealed some information. "He's the only one who's special. Among all the children, he's the healthiest."
Amuro Toru's eyelids twitched. What did this mean?
Vermouth shook her head again and said, "No, it should be said that only he can grow up healthy. The others were consumed before they grow up."
When Amuro Toru heard the word, his heart sank. He jokingly said, "Consumption? That word sounds a bit scary."
“Perhaps.” Vermouth took a sip of red wine and sneered, “But this is the most appropriate statement.”
She spun the cup, staring at the liquid inside, and said, "And this most healthy child will soon be consumed."
Amuro Toru's face darkened slightly. He hadn't expected that Hatori Yuiichi wouldn't live much longer.
He asked, "If that's the case, then why let him out?" Wouldn't it be more cruel to allow a person who is destined to die to come into contact with the outside world?
Vermouth understood what he meant and smiled slightly. "This is charity from those in power. He feels that letting him experience the beauty of the world before his death will allow him to die with gratitude."
Amuro Toru said in disbelief: "Huh?"
"Hahaha! Funny, isn't it?" Vermouth laughed so hard that she fell backwards. "I don't know who told him this, but when I found out, I thought the person who made this suggestion was an idiot. I wanted to persuade him to withdraw this order, but the only thing I could think of was..."
She leaned over to Amuro Toru, looked into his eyes, and said, "Weiyi told me that he wanted to see the outside world." She raised her hand and touched the corner of Amuro Toru's eyes, "His eyes were so clear, I couldn't say no."
Amuro Toru noticed that something was wrong with her. He grabbed Vermouth's hand that was groping on his face and said, "You are drunk."
"I'm not drunk." Vermouth pulled her hand back, leaned back on the sofa, and murmured, "I wish I could be drunk."
Having received enough news today, Amuro Toru decided to leave first. Before closing the door, he heard Vermouth say, "Let's improve his character design. Although that child won't live much longer."
Amuro Toru closed the door and his expression suddenly became serious.
Vermouth was a little strange today. She usually wouldn't say these words or comment on the boss's behavior.
From the information she revealed, it can be inferred that Hatori Yuiichi and Hatori Shizuji were both tissue cultured children, possibly ordinary human beings or experimental subjects. They were raised in the laboratory from childhood and, at a certain stage, were "consumed." As for the purpose of this "consumption," Vermouth likely won't reveal it, but it will always be something unpleasant like human experimentation.
Perhaps this was the reason why Hatori Shizueji was in poor health, and soon it would be Hatori Yuiichi's turn.
Thinking of what Vermouth said, "Let him feel the beauty of the world, and then let him die with gratitude", Amuro Toru sneered.
In the past, Hatori Yui might have faced death calmly, but that’s not necessarily the case now!
Amuro Toru lowered his eyes and thought: Maybe he could try to persuade Hatori Yuiichi to rebel.
