Chapter 5 Chapter 5 "It's a pleasure to work with you."
Pei Shuyu didn't expect Lu Hean to come back so suddenly. Maybe he was too engrossed in watching and didn't notice it.
He casually put the photo frame back and said, "Just taking a look. Are you done?"
"It's done." Lu Hean pulled up his collar and lay on the sofa, his brows full of unrelieved irritation, as if he was very tired. Pei Shuyu tactfully did not ask any questions and turned to walk towards the door.
"Brother Shuyu, don't you want to ask something?"
Pei Shuyu paused, tilted his head and calmly asked, "Will you tell the truth if I ask you?"
Lu Hean smiled and said, "Of course, Brother Shuyu, whatever you want to ask, I will tell you everything I know."
Pei Shuyu was even more worried after hearing his words, but he decided to put aside other grudges for the time being and trust him for once. He sat in the corner of the sofa farthest from Lu Hean, and after sitting down, he quietly moved a little further away. Lu Hean saw his little action and found it interesting. He couldn't help but ask, "Are you afraid of me?"
Before Pei Shuyu could answer, Lu Hean's phone rang. When Lu Hean saw the caller, his brows furrowed slightly, and a hint of displeasure flashed in his eyes. Then he walked to the balcony with his phone, "Father."
Pei Shuyu's ears drifted to their conversations. He leaned against the sofa, his mind wandering as he gazed at Lu Hean's back. He remembered the last time he and President Lu had met was during their breakup. He was probably calling to discuss the evening's banquet with Lu Hean. It looked like someone was about to have a good time, and he would be released soon.
"I will attend the banquet on time."
Out of respect, Lu Hean waited for a few seconds until the other party hung up the phone first before retracting his phone.
Lu Hean returned to the living room, but did not choose to sit back in his original seat. He stopped directly when he passed by Pei Shuyu. Pei Shuyu lowered his head and picked at his fingers in boredom. Now he had nowhere to move.
The atmosphere suddenly became weird. Lu Hean put his hands behind his back on the sofa, as if he was encircling Pei Shuyu.
"Tell me, why are you locking me up here?" Pei Shuyu asked first to break the awkwardness, because he really couldn't figure out the reason.
Lu Hean leaned closer to him again and chuckled: "Because I wanted to, I did it. Brother Shuyu, do you think this is an okay reason?"
Pei Shuyu: ...
He'd formulated numerous hypotheses over the past few hours, but each one was rejected mid-step. His approach was so nonsensical, even his motives were unpredictable. He didn't know whether to praise Lu Hean's strategic prowess or his own lack of insight.
But now, he said it was just because he wanted to? Has Lu Hean really messed up his brain in the past few years?
"Forget it, if you don't want to talk about it, let's talk about something else." Pei Shuyu was clearly unconvinced by the answer to the previous question. He crossed his legs, pulled up his trouser legs, and fiddled with the control ring on his ankle: "When will you let me leave?"
The two looked at each other in silence for a few seconds.
After a moment, Lu Hean chuckled, "Captain Pei, if you don't believe me even though I told you, then why bother asking again? As for when we'll leave... well, I already said I invited Captain Pei to be my guest, so of course I'll let him go when we've had enough fun."
Pei Shuyu was about to explode when Lu Hean continued, "Even if Captain Pei doesn't want to think about himself, he should at least think about your detained emergency supplies and Saifan."
Threaten him? At this point, if Pei Shuyu couldn't understand, he could resign immediately. There was no more room for discussion. He felt chest tightness and shortness of breath. If he continued to talk with Lu Hean, he might lose another three years of his life.
He raised his hands in surrender. "I admit defeat. Whether it's really because I'm overweight or someone is mad at me, I hope Colonel Lu will show mercy and spare our supplies and Sevan."
Lu Hean thought for a moment and said calmly: "You speak as if there is really anything I can do. I have arranged for someone to send your supplies back. They are on the way now, so you don't have to worry. Have dinner with me, and after that I will arrange for someone to send you back to Sevan." His tone was flat, and in his eyes these two major things seemed as simple as drinking water.
Pei Shuyu's doubts were answered with just two light sentences.
Saifan's funding chain has been unstable over the years, which explains why Pei Shuyu doesn't have much money on hand. Truly, the harder he works, the more heartbroken he becomes. He often jokes with his superiors that if Saifan were to fall, he'd bring his brothers and surrender to President Lu. His superiors would laugh and call him a bastard and kick him out. Saifan and Lu Hean would probably be evenly matched, so President Lu wouldn't intervene.
If the younger one were to fight a war outside and still need the older one's support, wouldn't that be a joke? Even if President Lu wanted to intervene, Lu He'an probably wouldn't agree. And there was no need. If a peaceful solution was possible, the former was the best choice. Now that the supplies had been retrieved, Lu He'an had agreed to let him go.
"Is it just a simple dinner?" Pei Shuyu asked doubtfully.
Lu Hean spread his hands: "What else? Captain Pei really wants to stay as a guest, then I can accept it."
"No, I have other things to do." Pei Shuyu shook his head. "Then let's have dinner. I'll give you access when I get back." He extended his hand to show his sincerity. "It's a pleasure to work with you."
Lu Hean's gaze followed the palm of his hand upwards, and as it passed over the palm, he caught a glimpse of a scar. The scar had healed, leaving only new skin tissue, slanting across the palm lines.
Lu Hean knew at a glance that this scar was left three years ago when he tried to snatch the ceramic fragments. He also had a scar on the back of his neck from the same time.
He could have erased the trace entirely.
But he has not had any scar repair surgery in the past three years.
It's ridiculous that this scar covers the most painful period of each other's life and is becoming the only evidence to prove that they were together.
Lu Hean's fingertips covered it and gripped it lightly. His fingertips unconsciously rubbed the scar, as if touching the years that had long since solidified.
“It’s a pleasure to work with you.”
The wind lifted the curtains, brushing against their clasped hands. Those goodbyes that were never spoken eventually grew into cocoons in their flesh and blood, more stubborn than vows.
…
The Royal Court is very busy today.
A group of reporters and paparazzi had already been swarming near the hotel. They'd received word that Chairman Lu would be meeting with the Qiao family tonight to discuss the marriages of the two young masters. Lu He'an and the Qiao family's omega would also be in attendance. Whoever caught the inside scoop first would win! This was the exclusive!
Everyone knows that Huangjue has a strict review process. Only the powerful and wealthy can get in, so the chances of getting a photo taken are almost zero.
A few reporters planned to disguise themselves and sneak in through the kitchen, which sounded like a good idea.
Some people even tried to bribe the security guards at the door, and Guan Ziling wasn't trying to mock them. What kind of place is this Huangjue? I heard one guy had been giving gifts to the security guard for months, and finally managed to bribe him and get a piece of information, but it was rejected before it could even be published.
A few days later, he lost his job and the entire journalistic community couldn't find him. The security guard was also laid off.
He decided to sneak in through the backdoor with the main group. If they got caught, it would be their bad luck, but everyone had a stake in it, so they had to stay put. If they didn't get caught, then the scoop would be up to everyone's own abilities!
In the back alley of the Royal Hotel, Guan Ziling tucked his miniature camera into his tie. He held his breath and followed the cleaning lady pushing a food cart into the staff passage. Passing through the kitchen and bathrooms, and then down a few winding corridors, he reached the lobby.
Guan Zicen immediately parted ways with the others after entering. He used the bathroom mirror to tidy up his appearance, patted his sleeves, and was secretly pleased: I didn't expect tonight to go so smoothly.
"Why are you still looking in the mirror? Don't you know how busy tonight is?"
Guan Zicen was startled and turned to see the man in the same uniform as him. He glanced at the name badge on the man's chest and broke out in a cold sweat.
It’s over, it’s over, I’ve found the real thing.
He nodded awkwardly: "Ah, yes, yes, yes, I, I'll go now."
"Wait."
Before Guan Zicen could breathe a sigh of relief, his heart was in suspense again.
He closed his eyes and felt that he was doomed.
The "real one" walked up to him, took a look at his inferior name card, and said sharply, "Which group are you from? I've never seen you before."
"I am, I am newly transferred..." Guan Zicen's Adam's apple rolled rapidly, and his nose was filled with the excessive lemon scent of hand sanitizer.
The "real guy" narrowed his eyes and was about to press the intercom when he suddenly heard the sound of leather shoes tapping on the floor behind him.
"Excuse me, there's a guest causing trouble in the front hall. Who of you needs to deal with it?"
Pei Shuyu was wearing a custom-made black suit with a sharp waistline. Next to him, Lu Hean, also wearing the same suit, leaned against the wall with a stern expression.
The man put down the walkie-talkie and respectfully called out, "Young Master Lu." He then turned to Pei Shuyu and said respectfully, "Sorry, sir, I'll take care of it now." Then he left without paying any attention to the dazed Guan Zicen.
After the figure disappeared around the corner, Guan Zicen couldn't believe it. Gone?! Just like that? Saved!
Seeing Guan Zicen still standing there stupidly, Pei Shuyu couldn't help but remind him, "Why are you standing there stupidly? Hurry up and go. Remember to change into a better uniform next time." Guan Zicen came to his senses and thanked him repeatedly.
The music in the hall played melodiously. Pei Shuyu watched Guan Zicen run away and said with a smile, "Kids are just kids, they're reckless."
It wouldn't matter if he didn't say it. Lu Hean, who had been looking sullen, turned even darker and straightened up. "Do you know him?"
Pei Shuyu turned on the faucet and asked, "So what if we know each other?"
Lu Hean frowned, recalling a distant memory.
I remember hearing some news before that the alpha Pei Shuyu had just arrived in Sevan. He was handsome, good-looking, and capable, and many omegas were attracted to him.
Pei Shuyu also takes good care of those omegas.
The information he had obtained at the time was not very accurate, and he was afraid that if things continued like this, Pei Shuyu would really run away with the omega. His appearance at the bar was no coincidence; it was because of the information he had learned that he was anxious and asked for Pei Shuyu's whereabouts.
Now, he felt inexplicably upset when looking at Pei Shuyu.
What? Now you’re not only taking care of omegas, but also betas.
Pei Shuyu dried his hands and turned around to see Lu Hean with an indescribable expression on his face. Thinking back to the previous conversation, he turned on the faucet again, dipped some water in it, and splashed it on Lu Hean's face.
"Put aside your wild thoughts. He really is just a child. I don't have that kind of feelings towards him."
Lu Hean's expression returned to normal and he retorted, "I didn't think much about it."
"Okay, okay, okay, you didn't think much about it, so I guessed wrong." Pei Shuyu took the lead and walked around him to the hall.
Anyway, I can just have a meal and go back, so I don’t want to argue with this childish guy.
