Chapter 8 Solving Dilemmas in the Real World
Wu Wangwang was very satisfied with Aunt Gao's reaction. She knew that this aunt who had taken the original owner out of the mountains would still be unable to resist helping a pitiful child asking for help again, even though she knew it would be difficult.
“This kind of job…” Wu Wangwang hesitated, making Aunt Gao think that she was worried that it was not good to talk about this job openly.
Aunt Gao, seeing that she had misunderstood, hurriedly explained, "It's not some kind of messy job. It's like this: I actually have some clients who have a hard time finding housekeepers and nannies. I have to let one go in less than a month. The prices they offer are very high, but many people can't afford them, so there are often vacancies."
Wu Wangwang couldn't imagine what the work environment was like, so she asked, "Why is it so hard to find a job? Is it because the boss and his wife are difficult to get along with?"
In response, Aunt Gao said, "Every family has its own problems. Sometimes it's the husband who's bad, sometimes it's the wife, sometimes it's the elderly, and sometimes it's the children. Unruly children are the hardest to deal with, but the hardest to deal with are actually those with a mentally ill person in the family. That's why I say this kind of job is best suited for hiding from people."
Because there is a mentally ill person in the family and the family is wealthy, they couldn't bear to send their family member to a mental hospital to suffer. Sending them to a sanatorium would be unsettling if they couldn't see them, so they simply chose to treat their family member slowly in their large villa. To prevent them from going crazy and running away, the house must be locked up and closed all year round.
It's not easy to find a nanny for this kind of job. Even if someone is so poor that they get beaten up and covered in bruises, they can only endure it for a while. Once they've saved up 100,000 or 200,000 yuan, they'll definitely quit. After all, no matter how much they're paid, it's meaningless if they're not alive to spend it.
Wu Wangwang nodded thoughtfully: "I understand a bit. It means that this kind of place is very strictly managed, and other people definitely won't be able to find it. Even if they do find it, they won't be able to get in."
Aunt Gao patted her forearm: "Yes, you should hide first. People like them definitely can't stand living in the city with police everywhere. Once they've spent all their money, they'll definitely go back to their hometown."
Actually, Aunt Gao had something else she didn't say. She knew that that damned old hag had several daughters, and that they had all been used to exchange for dowries. The reason she was keeping such a close eye on Wu Wangwang was because they discovered that the daughters they had sold were being controlled by their husbands' families, and they had no money to secretly give them.
When married daughters can no longer provide them with money, and sons are too young to be capable, they will focus on their last daughter, hoping to squeeze the last bit of profit out of her before exchanging it for a dowry.
Especially since Wu Wangwang was brought out of the mountains at a young age and worked for a wealthy family, earning more money each month than they used to earn in a year, they felt that instead of selling their last daughter, it would be better to let her earn money to support them.
Anyway, a woman's money before marriage belongs to her parents' family, and her money after marriage belongs to her husband's family. It's only natural for them to confiscate all of their daughter's money!
However, Aunt Gao wouldn't say this to Wu Wangwang. The other party was already very sad, and there was no point in saying such things now. What Wu Wangwang needed was a way out that would save her life and make her feel less afraid, not someone telling her that she was actually in a worse situation than she imagined.
Wu Wangwang didn't agree immediately. Instead, after thinking for a moment, she asked Aunt Gao, "Aunt Gao, could you recommend this job to my parents and younger brother as well?"
Aunt Gao was stunned by Wu Wangwang's words. Then she realized what she meant and immediately said with exasperation, "Wangwang! Why do you care whether they live or die? Listen to me, don't worry about those kinds of family members! You're still young, living your own life is the most important thing! Do you expect that when you get married and have children, you won't care if your children have to be bossed around by them?"
Although Aunt Gao's words were somewhat implying that women are not truly women, but rather objects that belong to their maternal family in the early stages and their husband's family in the later stages, she felt that if she didn't have another person who could suppress her parents, Wu Wangwang would go back to her old ways!
Wu Wangwang hurriedly waved her hand: "No, Auntie, listen to me. I asked the police these past two days, and they said that as parents, they have the right to know my information. In other words, if they can't find me and eventually report it to the police, the police will still find me and bring them here. Then, I will still be fired by my employer. What's the difference between this and the last time?"
Aunt Gao hadn't considered this aspect; she thought that as long as she avoided them, they wouldn't be able to find her: "They always came looking for us on their own before. Would they dare to call the police?"
“When you have no money, there’s nothing you wouldn’t dare to do,” Wu Wangwang said with a wry smile.
In fact, based on Aunt Gao's understanding, she knew that the more domineering a person was at home, the more timid they would be outside. Wu Wangwang's parents were so harsh on their child, so she might start to lower her head and panic as soon as she saw the police from afar, not necessarily because she felt guilty or thought she would be punished.
It's simply the fear that people who feel they are of low status feel when they encounter people of a certain status.
Just like how people in ancient times were afraid of the people in the government office, even if the person was just a sweeper in the office. In ancient times, you had to roll on a board of nails to enter the government office, so it was hard for people not to be afraid.
Even though modern society no longer has the concept of prosecution and punishment, some fears are ingrained in our instincts.
Aunt Gao didn't really believe Wu Wangwang's words that her parents might call the police to find their daughter because they had no other choice. But she was worried that, just as Wu Wangwang might not be able to foresee that they would call the police to find their daughter, she couldn't ignore the possibility.
With this path in place, and given that they are parents, they are essentially invincible.
Parents can never admit their mistakes to their children. Only when they actually harm or kill their children will they get a casual remark from a stranger that "they don't deserve to be parents," which is utterly useless.
Aunt Gao thought it over and over, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt that Wu Wangwang's words made sense: "It seems that this is indeed the case. Auntie was just assuming and forgot that you can call the police. So Wangwang, do you want me to find three jobs for each of you, oh no, and your brother too, so it's four jobs, or do you want you to all work together?"
Wu Wangwang took a sip of the refreshing and sweet watermelon juice and said, "Let's split into two places. Ideally, I'll be with my mom and I'll be with my dad. I'll do the laundry, my mom will clean the room, my dad will be the gardener, and my brother... he can do whatever he wants. Just try to separate us by gender as much as possible."
"Why separate like this?" Aunt Gao couldn't understand. She rarely saw such a separation. Generally speaking, if a man in a family went to work as a housekeeper or driver for a wealthy family, his wife would definitely go with him to work as a housekeeper. After all, if the whole family was together, they could see each other regularly.
Moreover, Aunt Gao could understand if Wu Wangwang worked alone, her parents worked together, and her younger brother worked alone, or if she worked with her parents and younger brother together. But what kind of division is it to divide them by gender?
The main reason, of course, is that Wu Wangwang wants to provide herself with an alibi and the status of a witness, but she certainly can't say that directly.
Wu Wangwang explained, “This is what I was thinking. If I were separated from them, they would definitely worry that I would run away. Even if they were offered jobs, they wouldn’t do them. If I bring my mother along, the credibility would be much higher. They can find jobs for me and my mother first. After my mother and I have seen what it’s like for rich people, my mother will naturally let me, and arrange for my father and brother to also work in rich people’s homes.”
Aunt Gao felt something was off, but she understood what Wu Wangwang meant: "You want to... take advantage of their desire for money to get them to agree to work?"
“Yes, otherwise they would never work. They can be supported by me, why would they work? Now they don’t even farm their own land anymore, they just want to get money from me. If I get married in the future, they will definitely let their younger brother get married, and then let their wives farm for them and support them. So, we must give them the illusion that money is easy to get before they will work.” Wu Wangwang explained very frankly.
At this point, anyone with a brain would probably understand that Wu Wangwang wanted to use this method to get her parents and younger brother to stay with a rich family, but how could people like them be honest and upright?
Aunt Gao didn't want to ruin her reputation all at once: "But... people like them, seeing so much money in someone's house, they'd definitely steal it..."
Wu Wangwang shook her head: "It's not certain. As long as the management is strict enough, we'll have to ask Aunt Gao for help. Do you have any families here that are particularly strict and have bodyguards in their homes? If they go in, they'll definitely be controlled and can only stay away from the owner's house. They'll definitely behave themselves for a long time."
At this moment, Aunt Gao remembered how timid that family was. Only by finding them a capable housekeeper could they be prevented from doing anything outrageous.
"But if we're too strict, what if they can't stand it and want to quit or cause trouble at your place?" Aunt Gao felt it wasn't safe enough.
“At that point, my mom would stop them, because she’s with me and sees how wonderful it is to be a human being,” Wu Wangwang said with a smile.
Despite the original owner's mother's patriarchal and ignorant greed, she was still beaten at home. Her status was only slightly higher than her daughter's. If her daughter was a cow that could be used at will, she was at least a pig that could be fed by the master. She thought she was of higher status than the cow, but when necessary, she would be killed and eaten.
The money given in wealthy families is real and tangible. When she realized that she no longer had to hand over all her wages to her husband and son, and could work like a normal person, be free, and live in a spacious room, she would never want to go back to the life where she was beaten, scolded, and had to serve others.
Serving her husband and son is the same as serving her master and mistress, so why doesn't she serve those who are well-mannered and paid?
Selfish people are never stupid; they just haven't had the chance.
Aunt Gao was deeply impressed by Wu Wangwang's idea. She patted Wu Wangwang's shoulder with emotion and said, "You've grown up and are much more thoughtful now. Let's do it this way. Auntie will take you to the interview right away. Once you pass, it will be much easier if you want to bring your mother along."
Wu Wangwang was a little confused: "Don't we need to go to the interview together? I can go back and explain it to my parents now. Anyway, I'm only taking my mom out. Even if she complains, she'll be more willing to go for the interview once she sees what the villa looks like."

Author's Note: [End of Chapter]
I've already revised the new chapter outline three or four times, and I still haven't decided which one to write. I'll write a transitional chapter to let me agonize over it some more QAQ
