Chapter 107 Confrontation
Sitting in the carriage back to the palace, Yun Wan relaxed physically and mentally, having finally resolved a worry.
The wheels of the carriage turned slowly towards the majestic imperial city, passing by a bustling and lively street market, and wisps of crispy fragrance penetrated the curtains.
Yun Wan called for a halt, and Fuling poked her head in and asked, "Master, what are your orders?"
Lifting the curtain and glancing outside, Yun Wan instructed, "I want to eat butter chestnut cake. Go buy me two."
She handed the silver to Fuling and said, "The other dim sum at Wuxiangzhai is also delicious. If you like, you can buy them yourself."
Fuling shook her head and refused. Then she pulled out a bulging purse from her sleeve and said with a grin, "This is what Eunuch Jiang gave me before I left the palace. It's more than enough!"
Yun Wan smiled slightly and let her do as she pleased.
With money to spend, Fuling quickly bought two bags of butter chestnut cakes, wrapped them in oil paper, and they were fragrant and soft.
Yun Wan opened a packet, ate two pieces, and then rewrapped it. She planned to take the rest back to the palace for Emperor Jingxuan to try, but she didn't know if he had ever eaten it.
She did not open the other package, but gave it to the accompanying palace maid, who sent it to the Hongwenguan after entering the palace.
After eating the chestnut cake, there was still an hour or so before reaching the palace gate. Yun Wan yawned lightly, propped up her arms and began to take a nap.
Before sunset, Yun Wan arrived at the Zichen Palace.
Stepping into the hall, the light was dim. Yun Wan lit the candlestick and the flame suddenly became brighter. When she turned around, she caught a glimpse of Emperor Jingxuan out of the corner of her eye and was startled.
Patting her chest, she angrily said, "Your Majesty, why are you so silent?"
She thought there was no one in the hall, but when she suddenly saw him standing by the window frame, she almost fainted from fright.
Emperor Jingxuan stood with his hands behind his back in front of a half-open folding window for ventilation.
The evening light fell on him through the gaps between the branches and leaves outside the window. Half of his body was bright and clear, while the other half was hidden in the shadows. The shadow on the ground was deep and long.
He turned around, revealing his handsome face. His dark eyes stared at her and he said in a calm voice, "Madam is back."
"Look at the lady, her complexion is rosy and her brows are full of joy. It seems that something good has happened."
He curled his lips, trying to appear sincere.
Because they were far away and the light was against them, Yun Wan couldn't see the expression on his face clearly. He walked towards the table with the candlestick in his hand, sat down, and said with a smile:
"There's nothing good about it. It's just that I've resolved an old issue and now I feel a lot more at ease."
She was talking about the Lu family, but to Emperor Jingxuan's ears it became something else.
Old things.
Oh.
Under the candlelight, his face was dim and difficult to discern, and he said nothing.
Suddenly there was silence, and the silence lasted for a moment. Yun Wan finally noticed that his mood was different and he looked quite strange.
She wondered if someone had done something in the past two days to make him unhappy?
After thinking for a moment, she picked up the teacup and turned to ask him, "Your Majesty, would you like some tea? I'll pour it for you."
Drinking tea can relieve heart heat.
The dark hem of his robe swayed as Emperor Jingxuan walked over and sat down across from her. "Thank you for your help, Madam."
Yun Wan poured a cup of hot tea and handed it to him carefully. Emperor Jingxuan reached out to take it.
"It's a little hot, you——"
The sound stopped abruptly.
As soon as he saw the purple on his hand, Yun Wan's mind went blank.
She stared at the familiar ring on his thumb, her breathing became slow and heavy, and the teacup in her hand was shaking.
Emperor Jingxuan took the hot tea from her hand and drank it all in one gulp.
“Boom.”
The teacup fell on the table, and he said with a half-smile, "Madam, do you recognize this ring?"
The redness on Yun Wan's cheeks faded little by little, and her head felt like a mess.
The ring that she had thrown away in the morning was now intact on its owner's hand, which gave her a shock no less than being resurrected from the dead.
Especially since she already felt guilty.
After hearing his words, Yun Wan sat there motionless, with an expression of astonishment that he couldn't control in time.
Emperor Jingxuan smiled and said calmly, "Madam, do you look surprised?"
"I might as well tell my wife that this ring is the one I lost five years ago and fortunately I have found it."
He took off his ring and held it on his fingertips, pretending to observe it. He said in a quiet tone, "Madam, would you like to know where you found it?"
Her thick eyelashes trembled slightly, and Yun Wan's eyes moved slightly, "Where, where?"
Emperor Jingxuan: "In the stable."
His tone was slightly colder, and his stern and majestic face was filled with gloom, but he still pretended to be calm and said, "What a coincidence, it happened to be at the Lu family's stable."
"Madam, should I give you an explanation?"
He lifted his thin eyelids and looked at her quietly, his narrow and long eyes gradually becoming deeper.
Yun Wan's face suddenly turned pale. "It seems that His Majesty knows everything."
"You knew it was me, so you brought up the ring on purpose, didn't you? You wanted to see me panic and reveal my true identity?"
She looked both frightened and calm. She knew in her heart that her guess was correct, but she still stared at him for confirmation.
Emperor Jingxuan pressed his lips into a straight line, and said in a deep voice with displeasure: "Madam, I am asking you."
"You actually threw my stuff into the stable. How nice! Madam, why didn't you throw it into the sheep pen, cattle pen, or pig pen?"
She could have discarded his things like old shoes, but why did she have to leave them in a place like that, in the Lu family's stable? It was obvious that she had no regrets at all.
This was difficult for Emperor Jingxuan, who was of noble status and the supreme ruler, to accept.
Especially the more I compare, the angrier I get.
........cattle, sheep and pig pens, because there are none.
Yun Wan moved her lips, wanting to say something but afraid that he would suddenly get angry.
Emperor Jingxuan suppressed his anger, clasped his hands on the table, his veins moving like tree branches, and his brows were furrowed.
Yun Wan was speechless: "In that situation, this is the only thing I can do."
Emperor Jingxuan asked quickly, "Then why don't you confess to me?"
Yun Wan lowered her head, "I dare not."
The air around him suddenly dropped as he finished speaking, and Emperor Jingxuan's expression tense. "If you had spoken up, why would you be so frightened? Are you afraid I'd kill you?"
Yun Wan looked up suddenly.
She looked at him silently with tears in her eyes, which explained everything.
She is afraid.
She was afraid he would kill her.
Emperor Jingxuan was suddenly hit hard in the chest and felt a dull pain.
Fortunately, he knew everything. Yun Wan no longer concealed it and simply said, "You deeply hate the person who framed you back then. You kept saying that you would cut her into pieces and execute her by slow slicing. Have you forgotten?"
"You hate her so much, how dare I seek my own death?"
The emperor's heart is as deep as the sea. What he said proves that he has the intention to kill. How can she dare to confess at this critical moment?
Emperor Jingxuan: "At that time, I didn't know she was you."
More importantly, I was afraid that she would think too much, so I spoke so harshly.
Who knew that the listener had a heart, and that person was her.
Yun Wan's eyes welled up with tears, her expression sad. "What happened next? Your Majesty clearly already knew the truth, but why did you bring it up several times, deliberately trying to scare me?"
Emperor Jingxuan remained silent.
It was clearly him who was questioning her, why did it seem like the situation was reversed now?
He was about to change the subject.
So he asked coldly, "Madam, can you tell me what happened that night five years ago?"
Yun Wan began, "Hasn't you already found out?"
Emperor Jingxuan said coldly: "I want to hear it from Madam herself."
