Chapter 36: Being a Gun
"Who are you? Why are you speaking so harshly?"
Princess Jiayi, the leader among the young ladies, turned around and looked at the visitor. She was wearing a rouge pomegranate skirt, with pearl hairpins on her head, and heavy makeup. She glanced at the visitor with a look of displeasure.
Yun Shiyue adjusted the gold hairpin on her bun and glanced in Yun Wan's direction, her complex expression revealing disdain:
"Meaningful? I'm only doing this for your own good. I'm telling the truth. Yun Wan killed her mother when she was a child, and then she killed her husband after she got married. What else could that be but bad luck?"
Retracting her gaze, she kindly advised, "I would like to advise you ladies not to get close to her, lest you be infected with bad luck and suffer disadvantages."
After hearing her words, several young ladies looked horrified, as if they had heard her, and those who were about to step forward stopped immediately.
Princess Jiayi wasn't frightened. She narrowed her eyes and looked at Yun Shiyue warily: "You know so much about this, what's your relationship with her?"
Upon hearing this, Yun Shiyue's maid said with a hint of pride, "My mistress is the wife of the eldest son of the Wenchang Earl's Mansion, the second young lady of the Yun family, and a sister of the Madam Lu you are talking about."
"As for the eldest lady's matter...my master also did it out of kindness. I hope the princess and the other young ladies will not be offended."
There is nothing wrong with this statement, and others who hear it will just think that the other party is giving a kind reminder. After all, everyone is afraid to get close to people with unknown fate, for fear of being implicated.
However, Princess Jiayi said, "So you are biological sisters? I didn't know you were enemies. You speak so harshly. I think you are jealous, right?"
They all came from deep mansions where people were cruel and ruthless, and they often fought with their sisters. Princess Jiayi was not a fool, so how could she not see Yun Shiyue's ill will towards her eldest sister?
Do you still want to gossip about them behind their backs and use them as pawns? Dream on!
How could a person like that be good when a younger sister talks about her older sister's shortcomings in public? She despises such people the most!
Princess Jiayi looked at Yun Shiyue with disdain and said to the young ladies around her, "Let's go!"
These people usually followed Princess Jiayi as their leader. They reacted instantly upon hearing what was said, looked at Yun Shiyue with contempt, and walked past her in a black crowd.
So what if it was the Earl of Wenchang's Mansion? It was only a fourth-rank rank. Who among those present wasn't of noble birth and prominent family background? There was no need to care about this man's expression.
Having her little trick exposed, Yun Shiyue stamped her feet in anger: "You guys!"
"You don't know what's good for you!"
He glared fiercely at Yun Wan. "It's all her fault! What a vixen! She wants to be the center of attention wherever she goes! She's a widow, but she's still restless!"
As if sensing something, Yun Wan looked over across the corridor and potted flowers and plants.
Facing Yun Shiyue's ferocious gaze, she reacted calmly and was not surprised.
Yueya whispered, "Madam, the second young lady looks very angry."
Yun Wan smiled and said indifferently: "When has she ever seen me without getting angry? Let her do it."
Without thinking too much, Yun Wan could roughly guess what Yun Shiyue had just done. It was nothing more than saying bad things about her to others.
But now it seems that her plan has failed.
After all, other people are not fools.
Not only Princess Jiayi and others, but other people who came to the banquet and had never seen Yun Wan were also attracted by her appearance.
Seeing her with light makeup on her fair face, picturesque eyebrows and eyes, and graceful and elegant figure, she was not wearing gorgeous clothes, but was breathtakingly beautiful with pearl hairpins around her. She was like a brightly blooming peony, making it difficult to look away. One could not help but envy and sigh.
Yun Wan pretended not to notice the vague gazes around her, sitting quietly in her seat and occasionally saying a few words to Lu Changning.
After years of seclusion, Yun Wan has become indifferent to such grand and prosperous occasions. If it were not difficult to refuse Princess Yongshou's kindness, she would not have attended today.
Fortunately, the old lady was there, so Yun Wan just had to sit quietly like a piece of wood and go back when the banquet was almost over.
She thought so, the crew of Yangzhou's famous Peacock Opera Troupe on the stage were ready, except for the main character, Princess Yongshou.
About half a minute later, there was a commotion in the corridor. Following the sound, I saw a group of people surrounding a woman who was dressed in gorgeous clothes and had an elegant demeanor. It was Princess Yongshou.
She was dressed in gorgeous clothes with a high collar and wide cuffs. Her skirt dragged as she moved, showing her royal style.
Everyone stood up and bowed to wish him a happy birthday.
Princess Yongshou's beautiful eyes were sharp, and a faint smile graced her dignified and majestic face. She smiled at everyone and said, "I'm sorry to have kept you waiting for so long."
Several officials and their wives who were close to Princess Yongshou responded with a smile, and the two sides exchanged a few words.
When the time was almost up, Princess Yongshou announced, "Today is my birthday, and I'd like to invite you all to join me in some fun. The troupe is ready. Without further ado, please join me in enjoying the performance of the renowned Peacock Troupe of Yangzhou!"
Princess Yongshou, with her long skirt flowing, was supported by palace servants as she walked towards her seat on the high platform. When she passed the Lu family's seat, she suddenly paused and looked at Yun Wan with a pair of flying eyes:
"I think this must be the third wife of the Lu family. She is indeed as stunningly beautiful as the rumors say."
Even though she had lived in the palace since she was a child and had seen the harem of the previous emperor, which was full of beauties, and after getting married, she had hosted many banquets of all sizes as the mistress of Duke Cheng'en's mansion and met countless people, she still had to sigh in admiration at such beauty.
Moreover, the other party is not just a pretty face, she has some talent and is quite famous and talented in perfume making.
Princess Yongshou had been accustomed to seeing all kinds of women waiting for others' mercy, like birds in a cage. She had some respect for women like Yun Wan.
Who doesn't like to hear good words? Yun Wan raised her lips and smiled, "Your Highness, you are too kind."
When she smiled, her eyes softened, and her already charming features became even more beautiful, and in an instant it was as if the ice and snow had melted and spring flowers had bloomed.
Princess Yongshou was stunned and couldn't help but joked to Madam Lu, "Madam, if I had known that you had such a beauty hidden in your family, you should have brought her out more often so that we could have the opportunity to see her more often."
Madam Lu paused, then took Yun Wan's hand and said helplessly, "Your Highness, you don't know, my daughter-in-law is a reserved person who doesn't like to go out. I have treated her as my own daughter over the years, so I will follow her wishes."
The Lu family's affairs were no secret in the capital, and Princess Yongshou knew that Yun Wan was a widower. Upon hearing this, she simply said, "The old lady is so kind-hearted."
Yun Wan had a smile on her face, playing the role of a quiet beauty, and pulled out the hand that was held by the old lady in a place where no one could see.
Changning, who was standing by, couldn't help but twitch his lips when he saw this.
Grandma really can say that.
"My kid is a jerk. I wonder if he scared Young Master Lu a few days ago?"
Princess Yongshou said this to Yun Wan.
Yun Wan shook his head and said gently, "Thank you for your concern, Your Highness. The child was not frightened at all. He is a carefree person and forgot about it when he woke up the next day."
Princess Yongshou: "That's fine, Madam, please feel free to do as you please."
As soon as she sat down, the sound of singing came from the stage, and today's birthday celebration opening show officially began.
.........
In the inner courtyard of the princess's mansion, separated by several walls that span half the length of the mansion, the sound of opera singing could still be heard.
With a click, Duke Cheng'en dropped a piece. He looked at the person opposite him, but seeing that he hadn't moved, he couldn't help but smile and said,
"Your Majesty, is there something on your mind?"
