Chapter 77 Self-deception
Unexpectedly, Yun Wan was exceptionally calm.
The old lady's question was like an insignificant pebble falling into the lake of her heart, causing slight ripples at first, but then returning to calm in an instant.
Yun Wan lifted her thin eyelids, her clear pupils gleaming slightly as she looked straight at the old lady, "Did Aunt Zhong say that?"
The old lady's face stretched long. She stood up from the couch, staring at Yun Wan intently, and said in a bad tone: "It doesn't matter who said it. You just need to answer me whether it is true or not."
Her eyes seemed to hold a knife as she looked Yun Wan up and down, trying to find anything unusual on her face.
She knew Aunt Zhong and knew she was not the kind of person who would lie.
Yun Wan let her stare at her. Her flawless, porcelain-white face was indifferent. Her red lips parted slightly as she uttered a few words, "What does mother think?"
The old lady's expression changed, and she raised her brows coldly: "Are you admitting it?"
She shouted angrily, "Great! Yun, you're so bold! I knew you were restless. How long has Lan'er been gone and you're already cheating on me?"
She was so angry that her chest heaved, and she pointed at Yun Wan and cursed, "You fickle bitch!"
Yun Wan stood up suddenly, not in the least bit afraid of her fury. Instead, he sneered, "Infidelity? A fickle woman? If Feng Lan knew you were disparaging his wife like this, would he be at peace in his afterlife?"
"And don't forget, today is his memorial day." She reminded him coldly.
Yun Wan once didn't understand. Since she married Lu Fenglan, she has been fulfilling her duties as a wife, taking care of her husband, serving her mother-in-law, and never overstepping the boundaries. Why is the old lady always dissatisfied with her?
Later, Yun Wan figured it out. The old lady felt guilty towards her youngest son, but she refused to admit that it was her fault that her youngest son was born weak.
She had been wishful thinking that marrying Lu Fenglan would bring good luck, but the truth was that Lu Fenglan's body was already at the end of its strength.
Seeing no hope of survival, the old lady felt at ease to shift all the blame onto Yun Wan, concluding that it was Yun Wan who killed her youngest son. From then on, the old lady felt at ease.
Yun Wan saw her self-deception.
Her clear eyes were like a mirror that could see through people's hearts at a glance. The old lady covered her chest with her hands and stared at Yun Wan with a murderous look.
Seeing her like this, Yun Wan's eyes showed indifference and boredom, and he no longer served the old lady as attentively as before.
She knew that the old lady was the best at acting and could make a three-point illness appear ten-point serious, so she just stood opposite and watched coldly.
The old lady said angrily, "If you hadn't really done something outrageous, why would Zhong have implicated you?"
Yun Wan's eyes flickered slightly, and she said slowly, "Since it was Aunt Zhong who said it, you should have her come and confront me instead of convicting me based on a few specious words."
After he finished speaking, he paused and smiled, "Besides, you are so sure, do you really want to see me involved with another man?"
The smile in her eyes didn't reach her bottom.
The old lady's face darkened suddenly. "What are you talking about?"
Yun pursed his lips and stared at her expressionlessly.
It was obviously the same person, but the old lady felt inexplicably frightened by her gaze.
"It's best if there's nothing. If it really happened, I won't let it go easily! Don't think that just because you've been in the palace for a few days, you can be arrogant and ignorant of the world!"
She snorted disdainfully, her tone containing a warning: "You are my Lu family's wife in life and my Lu family's ghost in death. My Lu family treats you well. When Lan'er was alive, he loved you very much. He never took a concubine for you. You must be worthy of him, otherwise-"
"Otherwise what?"
Yun Wan sneered: "Could it be that Mother wants to repeat the past?"
The old lady's expression changed, and she knew that she was still holding a grudge about what happened. This realization made her feel vaguely out of control.
Yun Wan took her silence as a sign of guilt and lazily averted his gaze. "Instead of being suspicious of me, why don't you discipline Concubine Zhong properly? This way, she won't become so domineering in the mansion that she goes out and starts talking nonsense, bringing disgrace to the Lu Guogong Mansion."
"I don't mind it much. I'm just a widow, after all. But if it affects the children... you'll regret it."
Her tone was slow and sarcastic, which made the old lady feel upset.
She took a deep breath and said unappreciatively, "I will take care of Aunt Zhong. You'd better behave yourself..."
She was about to knock again when the maid at the door came and said, "Old Madam, the carriage from the palace to pick up the Third Madam has arrived at the gate of the mansion."
The old lady was unhappy because he didn't come earlier or later.
"My daughter-in-law is leaving."
Yun Wan turned around neatly without any hesitation.
The old lady smashed the cup, her expression sinister: "This Yun family! She is so rebellious!"
.........
Yun Wan escaped and met Lu Yuanduo on the way.
He stopped, glanced at the bag in the hands of the man in front of him, frowned and asked, "Where are you going?"
Yun Wan: "The palace carriage has arrived, I should go back."
Hearing this, Lu Yuanduo was stunned. "Why are you in such a hurry? Can't you wait until tomorrow?"
He knew that Yun Wan held an important position in the Incense Bureau of the Inner Court, but it was not extremely urgent, so why did he have to leave today?
What's more... Yun Wan is just a small incense master in the Perfume Bureau, so why would the palace carriage come to pick her up in person?
Lu Yuanduo felt doubtful.
Yun Wan just shook her head and said, "I don't know either. Maybe it's the palace's rule."
Lu Yuanduo: "It's nothing important. I'll send him away. Will I send someone to escort you to the palace tomorrow?"
Yun Wan refused without thinking. If she didn't go back as agreed, who knew what that person would do?
Or it would not be appropriate to let Lu Yuanduo notice anything.
Her straightforward refusal made Lu Yuanduo feel heavy-hearted and his face looked unhappy.
After not seeing her for just a month, she seemed to have become more and more distant.
While thinking, Yun Wan called him, "Duke."
She looked solemn, and Lu Yuanduo suppressed his chaotic thoughts and asked, "What's wrong?"
Her dark blue eyelashes trembled, and Yun Wan's thin eyebrows knitted slightly. "I don't know how I offended Aunt Zhong. She actually said nonsense in front of the old lady, saying that I had an affair with a man outside..."
Lu Yuanduo paused.
Yun Wan pursed her lips, looking unhappy, and continued, "My mother just called me in and gave me a good scolding. I'm really heartbroken. Could you please ask me how I've offended her?"
She stopped there and walked past him.
Lu Yuanduo's face suddenly darkened, and he ordered, "Go to Zhong's place!"
Yun Wan didn't feel any psychological burden about causing trouble for Aunt Zhong.
When we arrived at the east gate, we saw a carriage parked in the alley, waiting quietly, with a wooden sign from the inner court hanging on the carriage.
The driver was a young eunuch whom he didn't know. When he saw Yun Wan, he smiled politely, "Master Yun Xiang, how are you?"
Yun Wan nodded slightly, stepped onto the carriage beam using a horse stool, and when she lifted her skirt and got into the carriage, she was stunned for a moment.
