Chapter 31 Twists and Turns
"Yin'er, no, it's not that I can't live without alcohol. I'm just bored and it's a habit. If you don't like it, I won't drink in the future, okay?" Gu Wan looked at the serious-looking man in front of her and felt a sudden panic for no reason. Sure enough, the next words were enough to shatter her composure and rationality. Although she didn't know the reason, she was subconsciously explaining anxiously.
Liu Yiner looked at the uneasy person in front of her, and her heart ached dully. However, if some things were not said clearly, it would lead to such a situation in the future. She didn't know how long she could hold on. She cherished the person in front of her, but if this preciousness always brought an unbearable weight, then she would rather spend the rest of her life alone.
The two people stared at each other uneasily, and no one took the initiative to hug the other. The originally deep connection between the two sincere hearts was now naked in front of them, becoming so weak that people dared not act rashly.
Liu Yin'er didn't know how to express her feelings at the moment. She wanted the two of them to walk together for the rest of their lives, but the person in front of her had too many hidden dangers. "Ah Wan, can you promise not to drink anymore in the future?"
After a second of hesitation, Gu Wan wisely chose to compromise. "Okay, Yin'er, I can do it."
"Then, what if I want you to stay away from that Young Master Zhao from now on?" Liu Yiner asked without any relaxation. She didn't want any changes in this relationship. She wanted to protect this love until old age, but these were not things that she could do by her own efforts.
Gu Wan was stunned. Is there any connection between them? But, this is not appropriate. "Yin'er, can you tell me why?"
Liu Yiner looked at her, feeling a little disappointed and a little melancholy. "What if I say there is no reason?"
"Yin'er, this is not good. There are other people besides Mr. Zhao. I can't just not make friends with others." Gu Wan said her guess with tears in her eyes. Is her wife jealous?
Liu Yiner sighed. Yes, if one Mr. Zhao left, there would be another Mr. Zhao. What right did he have to interfere with who she befriended? "Awan, that's not what I meant. I meant that people like Mr. Zhao are not good, you know? Can't you feel that he has feelings for you?"
Gu Wan laughed when she heard this, and her tense nerves finally relaxed. "Yin'er, you think too much. Didn't I say that Brother Zhao and I are just classmates, and we are both men. How could he be interested in me?"
Liu Yin'er also laughed sarcastically, "Yes, you are both men. Have you been a man for so long that you have forgotten your identity? Do you want me to remind you that you and are both women, but we are husband and wife? No, it should be said that we are husband and wife in name only but not in reality. We are just a fake couple."
"Yin'er, you can't speculate about the relationship between me and Brother Zhao just because you don't have any close friends. I can't be like you. You can't restrict me from making friends with others because of this." Gu Wan was shocked when she heard Liu Yin'er's words. What fake couple? How could her Yin'er say such things to her.
"Oh! So this is how I am in your heart? What's my mind? What's wrong with me? Who married me in the first place, and who said that I would be the only one in his life? It hasn't been long, and you can't leave a vulgar man." Liu Yiner looked at Gu Wan disappointedly. This was the person she cherished, and this was how she was in her eyes. It was really hard for her to endure it for so long.
"Yin'er, how can you...how can you talk like that? I can't live without you. What do you mean by a dirty man? Can you stop being unreasonable? I only like you. Please stop making trouble, okay? Calm down. I don't want to have a meaningless quarrel with you." Gu Wan pressed her solar plexus painfully. She felt very powerless about the scene before her.
"If I hadn't come back yesterday, do you know what the consequences would have been? Does it mean he has to do that to you? Ah Wan, you... forget it, I don't want to argue with you. Today you can only choose between me and him." Liu Yiner felt the anger in her heart growing bigger and bigger, but in the end she suppressed it all back. She sighed and gave Gu Wan a choice. She didn't want to continue this quarrel with swords drawn.
Gu Wan looked at her speechlessly. This wasn't a multiple-choice question at all. "Yin'er, there's no need to choose, okay? How can you and he let me choose? You're different."
Liu Yiner looked at the person in front of her who was trying hard to preach to her. She slowly stood up, walked to the door and paused. "Awan, you should go back to the county town tomorrow morning. Come to me when you have figured it out. I will go back to my father tonight." After that, she pushed the door and left.
Gu Wan stopped talking mid-sentence. What did she mean by coming back after she figured it out? What was going on? It really didn't make sense. There was no point in talking if there was no agreement. She was still feeling annoyed and completely ignored what Liu Yiner had mentioned about last night. So she still didn't find out what the problem was. She just planned to leave tomorrow. They both probably needed some quiet time.
Since that day, Gu Wan returned to the Gu Mansion in Jiuqu County and stayed there for more than ten days. During this period, she did not look for Li Yuan nor met Zhao Yunzhong. She only read and wrote at home, and occasionally had a few drinks. Perhaps affected by her mood, she always felt that the more she drank, the bitterer the wine became.
As the day of school opening was approaching, she got up early, cleaned her room and yard, and started reading a book in front of the window. However, at noon, she had only turned two pages of the book in front of her. There seemed to be a knock on the door outside the yard. She hurriedly got up, her steps getting faster and faster. The urgency and longing in her heart almost swallowed her up at this moment.
When he opened the door, he only saw Liu Yang, not the person he missed. Gu Wan was immediately deflated. "Liu Yang is here, come in quickly."
"Brother-in-law, I'm just here to deliver some clothes. I'll be back after I'm done." Liu Yang looked at his brother-in-law who was clearly in a bad mood, and he didn't stay long before returning to the academy. He couldn't stand Gu Wan's constant questioning about whether his sister had brought any messages. When he came, his sister really only said, "Take these clothes to your brother-in-law."
Gu Wan walked in a daze on the way to the academy. Yin'er hasn't figured it out yet, and so has she. Every word that the two of them blurted out that day was hurtful. It has only been more than ten days, and she is so spineless.
Gu Wan started her nine-to-five life again, as if nothing had changed, except that she no longer felt the urge to go home after school. When she got home, she would always look around. No one left a light on for her, and no one warmed a bowl of porridge for her. Suddenly, she didn't want to go home anymore.
Zhao Yunzhong had been visiting her more and more frequently recently, but she no longer had the mood to drink and sing. Besides, she seemed to have promised her wife not to drink. Her wife...
Days passed one by one, and a week was about to pass. Tomorrow was Saturday. Gu Wansi thought about it over and over again but still didn't know what to do. Was she really going to ignore others from now on? The next day, she gave a letter to Liu Yang, but in the end she didn't go back to Liujia Village with him.
In Liujia Village, Liu Yin'er read the letter she had been reading over and over again under the lamp word by word: Dear Yin'er, I feel like I'm seeing you in person. I rarely drink now, and occasionally I just have a few sips alone. I should be able to quit soon.
I haven't paid attention to anyone these days, and I'm not with Brother Zhao anymore. The osmanthus tree in the yard is in bloom, and I can smell its faint fragrance when I go to sleep at night. Autumn is almost here, and the autumn clothes you made for me last year are a little too big and don't fit me well anymore. Is the weather cold where you are? It should be the same as mine. I'm doing fine, my lady, don't worry! Gu Wanzi.
Liu Yiner looked out the window with melancholy. The moonlight was cold, the sky was full of stars, and there was a faint fragrance of osmanthus in the air. A few dog barks came from the distance, like stones thrown into the lake, and there was no ripple for a moment.
She crossed her arms and hugged herself tightly, as if she was really a little cold. Her clothes were also much looser, and it was as if a gap had been opened in her chest. The wind blew in, making her heart feel empty, as if she was drifting in the wind, unable to find any support. Ah Wan...
"Since we parted, I have recalled our reunion. How many times have I been with you in my dreams?" In the bedroom of the Gu Mansion, the person lying on the bed stared blankly at the pitch-black night, muttering words of an old poem, unwilling to fall asleep...
On Sunday afternoon, Gu Wan once again sat in front of the window early and looked out. She seemed to have become a husband-waiting stone, wondering what to do. Finally, there was a knock on the door. She suppressed the pounding of her chest, slowly opened the door, and the corners of her raised mouth instantly slid down.
"Brother-in-law, this is what my sister asked me to give you." Liu Yang ran away after saying that, fearing that Gu Wan would catch him and ask him endless questions like last time.
Gu Wan took the letter and looked at Liu Yang running away without paying much attention. She returned to the yard and seemed to remember something. She hurried back to her room and put the letter on the desk. She immediately returned to the yard, washed her hands carefully, and then sat down at the table and opened the letter seriously:
Dear husband, the sweet osmanthus flowers in the village are in bloom. Sister Li and I picked some sweet osmanthus flowers a few days ago and brewed two jars of wine. Maybe the wine will be ready when you come back later. I asked someone to cut some cloth for me, but I have a bad memory and can't remember your size. Next time, ask Yang'er to write down the number and bring it back. I'll make you a few underwear when I have free time. Everything is fine, don't worry!
Gu Wan happily took the letter and read it carefully several times, as if to confirm. Was it what she understood? Did her Yin'er forgive her? Could she go find her wife then?
Time passed quietly, but the air seemed to have become fresher in the past few days. Gu Wan was walking in the academy, thinking about whether to go find her wife, when she ran into Zhao Yunzhong. She remembered Liu Yiner's words and unconsciously stood a little further away.
