You don't love your wife, but I do. What's wrong with that?
The sun rises.
The breakfast stalls along the long street were bustling with activity.
Freshly baked flatbread, vegetarian porridge from the porridge shop, and steamed buns filled with celery—the aroma fills the air, tempting diners to swallow hard and their stomachs rumble with hunger. They long to snatch one from the pot and stuff it hot into their mouths.
"Do you know what first come, first served? This is mine!" a man shouted at the person next to him.
Yu Xi, who had been scolded, left the steamed bun shop with a face full of resentment. When she looked up, she saw Ye Qingzhou and her servant.
Yu Xi's eyes darted around, and she slipped to the side of the street, ran to the shop selling plum blossom soup dumplings, and waited.
“This is the place. Miss, Brother Nan brought me here to try it yesterday, and it was quite good. They use sandalwood powder water to make the dough, cook it in chicken broth, and they even make wonton wrappers using plum blossom molds. It’s so interesting.” Chonghua held Ye Qingzhou’s arm with one hand, watching her climb the steps one by one.
"When will you finally get it?" Ye Qingzhou was starving and didn't have the energy to say anything more. She just smiled at Chonghua.
As soon as I entered the shop, someone came to greet me.
"Like a glutton. All they know is good food." Yu Xi smiled slightly, her eyes scanning behind the two of them to make sure there was no one else there, before calling out inside, "Boss, two bowls, please."
Upon seeing him, Chonghua tried to pull Ye Qingzhou away, saying, "Let's go! Let's go home!"
But the owner was incredibly quick; he had already brought out two bowls of plum blossom soup dumplings and placed them on a table near the outside.
Today, Ye Qingzhou got up very early and walked so far with her big pregnant belly, she was already starving. The aroma of that bowl of soup was wafting into her nose. Should she walk home again? Ye Qingzhou lifted her leg, her legs went weak, her head spun, and she kept saying, "Oh dear."
Chonghua helped her sit down to rest her feet.
"I'm so hungry!" Ye Qingzhou murmured. The soup smells so good! When she came to her senses, she was already sitting at the table, taking a sip with her spoon.
The soup is fresh and delicious, very tasty!
Yu Xi sat down opposite him, staring at Ye Qingzhou through the steam from the soup bowl.
There's one more bowl.
Yu Xi reached out to take the soup bowl: "My husband and I are eating at the same table again."
Ye Qingzhou, who had fainted from hunger earlier, ate a wonton and his mind cleared up. He quickly brought another bowl of soup to himself and said, "Chonghua, let's eat."
He sat down and redrawn the picture.
Yu Xi was ignored by everyone, gave a self-deprecating laugh, crossed her arms, and looked at Ye Qingzhou in front of her who was eating half a wonton. Her lips were red and moving.
Ye Qingzhou ate her meal with a constant sigh. Yu Xi stared intently at her, seemingly unperturbed by the glare, but instead smiled. Ye Qingzhou found it impossible to eat.
"lady……"
Before Yu Xi could speak, Ye Qingzhou interrupted her: "Is your mother still at the inn?"
"Why are you being so formal? She's your mother-in-law." Yu Xi seemed to be in a good mood: "I'll take you there in a couple of days..."
Ye Qingzhou gritted her teeth, endured it for a moment, but still couldn't stand listening to him speak, and interrupted again: "I'm done eating. Redraw it, pay, let's go."
Ye Qingzhou and Chonghua went out and walked on the bustling street.
Yu Xi followed them at a leisurely pace, like a little shadow.
Chonghua whispered in Ye Qingzhou's ear, then covered his mouth with his hand, "Miss, should I get rid of him?"
Ye Qingzhou's eyes were fixed on the shelf the peddler was pushing, and she answered him in a low voice, "Judging from his appearance, he doesn't know about what's happened over there. Keep him occupied."
The peddler pushed his cart and called out his wares.
Ye Qingzhou followed the dazzling array of shelves, passing bird stalls, fish stalls, monkey trainers, fruit vendors, tea stalls, pastry stalls, calligraphy and painting stalls, fortune tellers, sugar figurine makers, and barbers.
Yu Xi continued to follow.
The peddler walked for almost half a street before being stopped by someone.
"Brother, get a rattle drum and the kite on top."
Ye Qingzhou's steps quickened as soon as he saw the man: "Jinghong, did you finish the task? Are you tired?"
Jiang Jinghong gave the peddler a copper coin, took the kite, and handed it directly to Ye Qingzhou, a smile playing on her lips: "From afar, I could see your eyes light up as soon as the ribbon under the kite fluttered."
Ye Qingzhou happily took it, and this time her bright black eyes met Jiang Jinghong's: "It's pretty! In a few days, when the children all come, let's go fly kites, okay?"
"Okay!" Jiang Jinghong readily agreed, and even embraced Ye Qingzhou. His family's happiness and bliss were right before his eyes, right at this moment.
The long street was gradually filling with pedestrians. Some people glanced at the loving couple with a smile, then hurried on their way.
Having seen this kind of small scene before, Chonghua, with great tact, took the kite and rattle drum, only to be bumped by someone: "Why did you break our kite?"
"Hmph! Stealing someone else's wife, and doing it so openly? Aren't you afraid the sun will burn away the little devil in your heart?" Yu Xi held a kite ribbon in her hand, glaring fiercely at Jiang Jinghong.
Two men passing by paused upon hearing the words "stealing someone else's wife," pretending to buy something. They touched the cosmetics the peddler was selling and listened intently.
"Don't talk nonsense. We only got together after the divorce," Ye Qingzhou quickly defended Jiang Jinghong, standing in front of him.
"He's been thinking about you for years! Humph! He's eyeing someone else's wife, what kind of good person do you think he is?" Yu Xi pointed her index finger at Jiang Jinghong again and again.
“You don’t love her, yet you took her dowry to sleep with other women. What’s wrong with me loving her?” Jiang Jinghong stood straight and spoke even more directly. There was no shame on her face; instead, her eyes held a hint of reproach as she looked at Yu Xi.
"You! What nonsense are you spouting! Stop slandering me." Yu Xi looked around and saw that some busybodies were already pointing and whispering about him.
"The Yan'er you married later is not only the advisor's mistress, but also has an affair with her cousin. Of course, the three of you aren't the only ones she's involved with." As more and more people gathered to watch the spectacle, Jiang Jinghong pulled Ye Qingzhou into his arms and raised his wide sleeves to cover her face.
Yu Xi had come to demand an explanation, but ended up getting the short end of the stick.
"Hehehehe... He deserves it, he doesn't know what's good for him." The peddler muttered.
The two men who had been touching box after box of rouge and face powder nodded: "That's right, that's right."
