Chapter 895: First Lesson of School Three-in-One

“Bang, bang, bang…”

Early in the morning, a sound was heard from the bamboo forest not too far away from the Qingque tribe.

These are some people from the tribe cutting bamboo here.

Things like bamboo, once they have established roots in one place, they reproduce very quickly.

Many bamboos can grow on a bamboo whip.

After nearly ten years of growth, the bamboo forest in the Qingque tribe has completely flourished.

Not only did it completely cover the previous earth hill, but it also extended a lot to the surrounding area.

If Han Cheng hadn't had people dig down a little at the edge and then simply built a stone wall using lime and stones, these guys would have spread to the nearby farmland.

The panda Tuan Tuan, its mother, and two other panda cubs, who were originally lying lazily in the bamboo forest and playing on a wooden frame specially built by Han Cheng, immediately perked up after hearing the sound and seeing the actions of Han Cheng and his companions.

It looked clumsy and came down from above, then rolled over with its short legs. Then it hugged several bamboos that Han Cheng had chopped down and refused to let go, acting cute and coquettish in all kinds of ways, and even nudging its head on people's legs.

Just because you can act cute and coquettish, you can do whatever you want?!

Facts have proved that if you know how to act cute, you can do whatever you want. After a short while, a few chubby guys got bamboo from Han Cheng and others, then sat down and started to chew on it.

Bamboo, which is so hard that humans need knives and axes to cut it, is as easy to bite through as tofu under their sharp teeth, just like chewing sugarcane.

Seeing this, Han Chengdu wanted to drive them to gnaw down the bamboos one by one.

Of course, this is impossible. If these guys could be so well-behaved and obedient, they would not come to rob the bamboo that we had cut down when they could easily gnaw down a bamboo.

After showing some contempt for those bear cubs who were greedy and afraid of working, Han Cheng and Shitou and his men continued to cut bamboo.

From morning till breakfast, I finally finished cutting down six bundles.

After all their busy work, nearly two hundred bamboos were cut down, tied into bundles, and carried away.

This action made those guys wearing sunglasses feel very sad.

As soon as he saw that the bundles of delicious food were about to be carried away, he immediately refused to do it. He grabbed the legs of Shi Tou and others with his front paws, then sat down on the ground and started to act like a spoiled child.

If Little Pea had not heard his father's call and ran over, Han Cheng and his friends would have needed some more time to get rid of these hooligans wearing sunglasses.

A pond was dug out downstream of the small river in Qingque tribe, not too far from the hemp pond.

It is not as big as the hemp pond, but it is not too small either.

It is not yet time for the hemp in the tribe to mature, and this newly dug pond is certainly not used for retting hemp.

Under Han Cheng's command, several bundles of bamboo that had just been cut down were put into the pond one by one.

And just like retting flax, large stones are used to press it down to prevent it from floating.

However, unlike when retting hemp, the pool used to soak bamboo is not connected as a whole, but is divided into several smaller pools, and the water in them does not connect to each other.

And a bundle of bamboo is soaked in each small pond.

"Bring me another three tons of lime."

After seeing that everyone had finished it, Han Cheng gave orders again.

That’s right, what Han Cheng and his people are doing now is making paper.

The papermaking technique had been discovered several years ago, and the tribe was already able to make paper.

However, the material used is made of thin inner fibers of tree bark and other things, and the color is a bit yellow.

This is not the most important thing. The most important thing is that it is too soft. It is okay to write on it, but it is not as good as the paper specially used for writing in later generations.

Also, if the ink is too thick or the handwriting is too obvious, you cannot write on both sides.

Han Cheng had long wanted to make a change, but he didn't know much about papermaking. Previously, instructing Shi Tou to make such paper had almost drained away all his knowledge about paper.

But the time he spent compiling and copying textbooks once again made him want to improve the paper.

While he was thinking hard, a flash of inspiration suddenly came to him and he actually thought of some new things about papermaking.

This seemed to be something he had seen in an online novel before he traveled through time.

When he saw it at that time, he didn't pay too much attention to it. He just glanced at it and it passed by. It didn't leave a deep impression.

If I hadn't been thinking about improving the papermaking technology during this period, this memory might not have come out.

Moreover, even if I recall it, it is very vague.

The idea of using bamboo as the raw material for papermaking and soaking it was something I got from that vague memory.

As for why lime was added to it, Han Cheng was not quite sure. He didn't know whether it was to accelerate the decay of the bamboo or to bleach it.

Not only is it that I can't remember the function very clearly, I'm not even sure whether the lime was added when the bamboo was first fermented, or added after a period of time, or whether it was added after the bamboo was almost fermented.

But this did not prevent Han Cheng from directing people to do so.

Who cares!

Anyway, the general direction has been determined. All that remains is to make a few more attempts and record and summarize the process and results of each experiment, and you will be able to figure it out slowly.

At this time, the people in the tribe also came over carrying three pieces of lime according to Han Cheng's request.

"Sprinkle two scoops of lime evenly into this pit, and pour one scoop of lime evenly into this pit."

Han Cheng pointed to the two small pools closest to the shore and gave instructions to the people who were carrying lime.

The two men followed Han Cheng's instructions and soon they held the handle of the hoe with one hand and lifted the edge of the hoe with the other hand, and poured the water evenly into the two small pools.

These limes have not been soaked in water, so after entering the water, they easily release heat, not only hot steam but also some bubbles.

He had already obtained the stone handed down by Han Cheng long before. Without Han Cheng's reminder, he consciously took a pen and recorded these things, and also recorded the time.

As for the remaining four small pools, Han Cheng did not let anyone pour lime into them.

Instead, they wanted to wait until a period of time had passed and the soaked bamboo began to rot, and then pour lime into two of the pools.

It's just like today, one poured more and the other poured less.

As for the remaining two pools, wait until the bamboo is completely rotten before pouring lime into them.

After doing this, and then comparing the final product, it will be easier to tell when it is appropriate to add lime.

After doing all this, Han Cheng instructed Shitou and others not to let the water in the several pools mix together, and not to let the water here flow into the stream.

This is not just a concern that mixing the water from several pools will affect the results of the experiment, but more importantly, the water used for fermenting things is very "strong" and can cause serious water pollution, especially water with lime added.

This is something that can poison fish to death.

Han Cheng had experienced a similar thing before. A family in the village bought several carts of lime to build a house, and then soaked it in water in a pit.

The pit for soaking lime is close to a drainage ditch.

It didn't cause any trouble on normal days, but it became a problem after a heavy rain in the summer. The pit where the lime was soaked was directly connected to the drainage ditch, and the water and some lime in it were washed into the stream.

Then the fish and shrimp in the stream suffered and many were poisoned to death.

After the water receded, Han Cheng and some of the children in the village often picked up fish along the stream...

People in the tribe, including Shitou, naturally kept Han Cheng's instructions in mind.

After finishing these tasks, Han Cheng and his group left here one after another and started to get busy with their own things.

After a period of growth, the first batch of millet planted in the tribe has humbly lowered its head, and it will not take too long to harvest.

People in the tribe also need to prepare for this year's autumn harvest.

At the same time, we also need to prepare for Han Cheng and his team to go south...

"Once upon a time, there was a little donkey who lived with his mother by a river. One day, the mother called the little donkey to her side and said, 'Little donkey, you have grown up and can eat grass by yourself. Today, go to the grass on the other side of the river to eat grass... Little donkey! Little donkey! Don't go down! The river is very deep..."

Those who have teaching experience in the tribe include Han Cheng and Shitou, who once taught people in the tribe to speak Mandarin and write Chinese characters, Yuan, who is very talented in mathematics, and two other people.

It was impossible for Han Cheng to stay in the tribe to teach. He needed to take people to Jinguan City to rebuild the second branch tribe.

Moreover, time is becoming more urgent now.

Now, the earliest batch of millet planted in the tribe will be harvested in a few days.

Although rice is different from millet, it is basically harvested in autumn unless it is too far south.

Moreover, Jinguan City is further south, and with the Qinling Mountains blocking the way, the temperature can be two or three degrees higher at the same latitude. I'm afraid that the rice there will mature earlier.

If we go too late, a lot of rice will probably be eaten by various birds...
