Chapter 1 The Current State of the Apocalypse

He is Zero, an NPC in the apocalypse.

I'm sure everyone has played games. Unlike NPCs in games, he has his own thoughts and behaviors, and can act freely. You can also treat him as a cheat code.

After all, he's an NPC with cheat-like abilities.

You ask why it's called a cheat code? Well, there's no way around it; it has a powerful background and was born strong.

But that's a story for another time.

However, he wasn't originally in this world; he only came here because he received a mission: to protect the human world.

This is a world where the human spirit is constantly on edge. Zero's mission in the Fallen Cloud Realm is to protect this place and its inhabitants...

...

In the apocalypse, humanity is no longer the master of the world, but has become "prey".

A hundred years ago, the human world had reached its peak of development. Ordinary animal food could no longer meet their needs, and scientists began to study new species. It was during this research, and the failure of an experiment, that a new kind of "animal" was born—two wings, eight legs, compound eyes, impervious to water, moving at great speed, and highly heat-resistant.

There is currently no way to completely eradicate it, and it reproduces extremely quickly.

This led to the gradual occupation of the human world by this new species, which in turn gradually spawned variants.

Humans call it the "multi-legged lizard" and its extremely rare variant, the "giant lizard".

What makes this species terrifying is that it immediately attaches itself to human skin upon contact, similar to a leech, but ten times more terrifying!

They suck blood, but they also expel blood.

They absorb human blood, then are "filtered" and "selected" by their own mutated cells, mixed with their own body fluids, and then excreted directly into the human body through the hair follicles on the skin.

Once this "virus" enters the human body, it rapidly kills immune cells, destroys red blood cells, and continues to divide and evolve.

The final human will gradually be assimilated and become a "giant lizard".

This species is practically without weaknesses; the only thing that can temporarily render them inactive is to use an extremely pungent odor to repel them.

It's merely a deterrent, because if the smell isn't strong enough or people aren't careful, they're easily "targeted" and end up becoming one of them.

To reduce the likelihood of being attacked by this species, human homes have moved underground from the ground.

The former rulers of the continent are now forced to cower underground, where the sun never shines. How tragic!

If it weren't for greed and dissatisfaction with the status quo... how could this be...?

Zero's mission is to bring humanity back home and into the sunlight.

...

At dawn, Zero arrived at the outskirts of the human settlement.

The base is large and is surrounded by metallic glass. This new type of metallic glass incorporates trace amounts of palladium, a hard metallic element with an extremely high volumetric shear rate, which counteracts the inevitable fragility of glass materials.

Its sturdy and durable properties effectively prevent ground vibrations caused by large-scale mutated species. Furthermore, its good light transmission allows for the appropriate introduction of sunlight, enabling the cultivation of vegetables underground.

Logically speaking, since humans can build "underground homes," they should be able to develop and survive underground.

The idea was wonderful, but the reality was harsh.

Even though humans have established underground bases and have tried to reduce their chances of contact with mutant species, they still cannot avoid going out to search for resources and increase supplies.

After all, underground development is too slow, and resource supply cannot meet every demand.

This inevitably requires dedicated personnel to go out and collect resources to meet the needs of the people in the underground home.

Ling met Ye Hao here.

He was one of the base team leaders, along with his subordinates Qin Feng and Chongming.

They were very grateful for Zero's arrival. Although Zero had not yet helped them in any way, in their eyes, Zero was the light of the world and their hope.

Let me show you around.

Ye Hao said to Zero with a smile.

Zero nodded and followed him through their underground home.

Along the way, they also met two female team leaders, the Ling Shuang and Ling Shu sisters.

They are mainly responsible for the distribution of supplies, the supply of resources, and the management of the planting area.

At lunchtime, Ye Hao introduced me to the "food" here—

A strange food that resembles bread but isn't quite bread, square in shape, and smells like butter.

Ye Hao said it was a nutritional supplement they had developed. Although it didn't taste very good, it was highly nutritious and very filling. It was considered a "luxury item" here.

What constitutes luxury in the end times? It is not money, jewelry, or clothing, but food and water.

With the scarcity of resources and the sudden mutation of humanity, people in this apocalyptic world live in constant fear, as if standing on the edge of an abyss or walking on thin ice.

After listening to Ye Hao's words, Zero had a general understanding of life here.

The first problem to be solved is the issue of food and clothing for humankind.
