Chapter 136 Speculation

I sat back on the bed, thinking about what to do next. I used to think that the old man was just trying to comfort me by sitting in the wheelchair with me. But after I got home, I found out that the old man had indeed been sitting in a wheelchair for a long time. According to my mother, the old man's legs only started to have problems the year I got sick. But why would Bai Cheng do this?

I thought about it for a long time before I came to a conclusion. When we were in trouble, it was Bai Cheng’s family who helped the old man make a comeback, but at the same time, they were implicated by our family and suffered the destruction of their family. Perhaps Bai Cheng felt that our family had implicated them, so he joined forces with outsiders to seek revenge on us. But if it was just revenge, why me? Only me. The old man only injured his leg.

After the Xu family passed away, the Xu Corporation had no leader except for a few scattered shareholders. So the old man acquired the Xu Corporation and made it the Bai family's property. Even so, the old man raised Bai Cheng as his successor from childhood. The original successor, me, was raised leisurely. So what was Bai Cheng's purpose?

I'm completely baffled, but I need to resolve Bai Cheng's matter as soon as possible to prevent him from drugging me again. He has considerable influence and power within the Bai Group now; since the old man injured his leg, he's been handling most of the affairs...

I suddenly realized what Bai Cheng wanted to do. He didn't want the Bai family business; he wanted to turn it back into the Xu family business. If he used tricks to take the Bai family business away from the old man, the other shareholders might not agree. Only if he rightfully inherited the Bai family business and then renamed it the Xu family business would it be convincing. Before that, he had to ensure that I, the true heir of the Bai family, would lose my right to inherit the business. That's why he conspired with Little K to poison me and put me into a hallucination.

Before he can establish himself, the old man must be there. He needs the old man's support to secure his position as CEO Bai. Although most people don't know that Bai Cheng is the original son of the Xu family, most people think that Bai Cheng is the old man's illegitimate son. Therefore, it is already difficult for him to enter the company and replace the old man. However, if the old man strongly supports him and he is capable, then these opportunistic shareholders will all lean towards his side.

Suddenly, the door lock clicked twice. I got up alertly and looked at the lock. I saw the doorknob swing down a few times. The person outside seemed not to have expected the door to be locked. After twisting it twice and failing to open it, they pushed the door open twice, seemingly afraid that someone would hear them, so they didn't use much force.

I tiptoed out of bed and went to the door, pressing my ear to listen carefully. After a moment, I heard footsteps slowly fading away. The footsteps sounded like two people. One person's steps were steady, clearly the sound of leather shoes, while the other's footsteps were softer and smaller, as if they were walking on tiptoe. Who would walk on tiptoe? There was only one person in the whole house, Little K, who was the only one wearing high heels. She was worried that the sound of her high heels on the ground would be too obvious, so she was walking on tiptoe.

It seems they're planning to attack me again. I need to speed things up. I looked around the room and realized I didn't have a phone. There was no way to contact my parents now. What if Bai Cheng and Xiao K were waiting for me at the door if I went out? They were able to drug me silently back then, so they can't be without their methods now.

I don't know how my mother and grandfather's conversation went, or why they haven't come to find me yet. My heart is getting more and more anxious. The longer I stay in the illusion, the more I worry that if I see hope one second, it will turn back into an illusion the next.

I started to miss Ji Lin'an. If he were here right now, I would wish. My eyes welled up with tears. Could he just be an NPC I encountered in my illusion? Will I never see him again?

In my sadness, I reflected on the people and events I encountered after entering the illusion. They didn't seem like characters without any self-thought; most of them had flesh and blood and emotions. Perhaps, like me, they were also sent into the illusion?

Thinking about this, I suddenly wanted to go to Bai Cheng's company. Maybe if I went there, I could find out whether the people I knew were illusions or the consciousness of real people.

Suddenly, I became bold and walked straight back to my bedroom, opened the door, and stood at the door looking around. I didn't see Bai Cheng and Xiao K. I pressed the elevator button and walked to the stairwell, nervously listening to the sounds around me. Sure enough, when the elevator reached my floor and opened the door, I vaguely heard the sound of a zipper hitting the tiles. I entered the elevator, hesitated for a moment, pressed the button for the 5th floor, deliberately made my footsteps louder as I entered the elevator, and then quickly exited the elevator.

If I go down now, Bai Cheng and Xiao K will definitely block me at the elevator entrance on the 3rd floor. I won't have time to get down to the 2nd floor. If I go up to the 5th floor, they might come up to the 5th floor to look for me.

After the elevator doors closed, I quickly hid behind the pink armchair in the living room. A moment later, I saw Bai Cheng and Xiao K running up the stairs from the third floor through the gap in the giant plush toy next to the sofa. Bai Cheng quickly looked at the open door, went in, walked around for a bit, and then came out and winked at Xiao K as he looked upstairs.

Little K nodded, took out a thin syringe from his bag, uncapped it, checked the contents, and nodded to Bai Cheng after confirming it was correct. Bai Cheng walked ahead, and as the two disappeared around the corner between the fourth and fifth floors, I quickly got up and ran towards the stairs. I took a few big strides down the stairs and reached the second floor from the fourth floor in less than 10 seconds.

Without pausing for a moment, I ran up to the second floor and gently knocked on my parents' door. When there was no response, I continued to knock lightly and quickly. I listened intently to everything around me and seemed to vaguely hear footsteps approaching the door, but the door remained closed. I approached the door and whispered, "Mom, it's me."

The door opened the next second, and my mother looked at me with a mixture of surprise and delight. She glanced warily behind me and quickly pulled me into the room, closing the door behind her: "Why did you come down? Didn't I tell you to stay in your room?"

After saying that, my mother locked the door from the inside and pulled me toward the study. When I entered the study, I saw my grandfather sitting in a wheelchair. His face looked much more weathered. He must have known about me. My grandfather didn't say anything, but turned his head to indicate that I should sit on the sofa. I obediently sat down, and my mother sat down as well.

I looked at the two of them and said, "Bai Cheng and the others are going to make a move against me. They've already been to my room once, and they seem to be in a hurry. They've been watching my every move from the stairwell on the third floor. I managed to get down here by some means. I saw that Xiao K was holding a syringe with some pure white liquid inside."

The old man frowned and looked at my mother. My mother's expression wasn't very good either. I asked in confusion, "Mom and Dad, what's with those expressions?"

The old man sighed deeply...
