Wu Feng poured tea for Xiao K and the others. After taking a sip, Xiao K saw that I didn't speak and asked again, "Hey, Su Yi, isn't Xi Lang with you? Where are the others?"
Before I could even see what was happening, Wu Feng stood at the door with his arms crossed and said, "They've gone out to find supplies."
Little K's smile was deliberate: "Looking for supplies? Are you short of supplies?"
I looked at Little K: "When did you arrive?"
Little K picked up the teacup and fiddled with the rim: "We just arrived today."
I laughed too: "This morning?"
K seemed a little awkward: "Pretty much. Haven't you eaten anything? We brought some food, let's eat something first."
Before we could even open our mouths, K had the man who came with her take out several loaves of bread from his bag: croissants, egg tarts, peach shortbread, and some cookies. The man placed them on the coffee table one by one, and K waved to us: "These were all freshly baked yesterday morning by a survivor from G City. He brought them with him in the car this afternoon and dropped them off for us. Try them. This survivor used to own a bakery, and he's quite skilled."
Looking at the fresh bread on the table, which we hadn't eaten in a long time, we were tempted but hesitated to reach for it. When Little K saw that we didn't move, he quickly got up, grabbed some pastries and distributed them to me and Ji Lin'an. He then picked up a box of peach shortbread and walked over to Wu Feng: "Brother, come sit down and have some. Standing is tiring."
Wu Feng's expression showed a hint of disdain, but he maintained a smile: "I'm not tired, and I don't really like sweets."
Little K paused for a moment while holding the peach shortbread, then smiled and said, "Don't you like sweets?"
Little K turned to another man and said, "Jun Jun, take the food out of your bag."
The man named Junjun immediately opened his bag and took out several bags of food sealed in transparent plastic bags. Xiao K quickly took the food from Junjun's hand and walked to Wufeng, handing it to him: "These were also made by us survivors yesterday. There is cold-cooked rabbit, spicy chicken, hand-shredded beef, and pork jerky."
Seeing Xiao K introducing everyone to him one by one, Wu Feng felt a little embarrassed. He casually grabbed a bag of food and said, "Thank you, I have enough. You can give it to them."
Little K watched as Wu Feng took the food and smiled at him with satisfaction. Wu Feng felt a little awkward under her gaze, so he could only open the package and start eating: "Hmm, it's pretty good."
Although it was a somewhat perfunctory answer, I could see a hint of surprise and relief in Wu Feng's expression as he ate it. I reached for a bag of croissants, opened it, and handed one to Ji Lin'an. When Xiao K saw that we were also eating, she quickly ran over and sat down next to us: "There are still these, you can eat them too."
I smiled and nodded: "Thank you."
Little K got up and surveyed the shelter again: "So many of you live here?"
I didn't answer, I just nodded while munching on a croissant. Little K stood in front of me with his hands behind his back: "This is really much worse than the shelter in G City. A car will be picking us up tomorrow, why don't you come along?"
Finally, we got to the point. It was obvious that K's purpose in coming here was to take us back to the shelter in G City. I pretended to choke and reached for the tea, taking several sips: "K, aren't you going to eat?"
Little K shook her head: "I'm not eating anymore. We eat it all the time. We can get a few loaves of bread for afternoon tea every day. I'm tired of it."
I lowered my eyes and nodded. Little K then asked, "Su Yi, is that handsome guy next to you your boyfriend?"
I nodded again, and after nodding so many times my neck started to ache. I asked, "If you're leaving tomorrow, where will you be staying tonight?"
Little K thought for a few seconds: "Let's see tonight. It's been a long time since I've seen Xilang. By the way, when are Xilang and the others coming back?"
I shook my head: "They'll be gone soon, they've been out for a while now."
As if on cue, Qianliyan and Wufeng appeared, each carrying a box. Qianliyan complained as soon as he stepped inside, "This was so hard to find, there's hardly any supplies left. Tomorrow..." Before he could finish, Qianliyan saw several people sitting inside and froze, "Old Ji, who are these people?"
Xilang stood there, his expression shifting between light and dark, a hint of murderous intent in his eyes. When Xiao K saw Xilang come in, he quickly and enthusiastically got up and walked up to him: "Brother Xilang, we meet again. Since you hadn't come back for a while, we came to play with you."
As he spoke and laughed, he put his hand on Xilang's shoulder. Xilang instinctively lowered his shoulder, but with a box of supplies in his hands, he couldn't dodge Xiao K's hand. Seeing that he couldn't avoid it, Xilang quickly took a few steps, shook off Xiao K's hand, put the supplies on the ground, plopped down on Shanfa, drank several cups of tea, looked up, raised his eyebrows, and said, "What are you doing here?"
Little K sat down with a smile: "I told you, I came to see you."
Xilang sneered: "You were the ones who handled the supplies, weren't you?"
Little K paused for a second, then put on an innocent expression: "What supplies?"
Xilang leaned back on the sofa with his arms crossed: "Stop pretending. Do you think I don't know what you're thinking? I've never seen anyone as shameless as you, coming here to steal..."
Before he could utter the word "rob," Xilang stopped himself in time, glancing at me and the others with a hint of guilt. Seeing that our expressions hadn't changed, he continued, "Coming here to rob supplies, how shameless."
Little K was equally defiant, and said with a mocking smile, "Brother Xilang, everything needs evidence. You can't slander me like this. We don't lack supplies in G City. We eat and drink well every day. Do you think I would even look at your cheap convenience food?"
Upon hearing this, I immediately turned to look at Little K. Little K was clearly startled by my sudden turn, her eyes darting around uncontrollably. Perhaps realizing she had let something slip, she put on a smile and said, "If you stay here any longer, you'll just be searching for some convenience food and snacks that will expire soon. I'm afraid you haven't had any fresh food in a long time."
I sneered, "No, that's not it. We just had roast whole lamb a few days ago, as well as Peking duck and hot pot. What's so special about these things?"
Little K was surprised that we ate more than she had imagined, and she looked a little embarrassed: "But you can't eat like this all the time, otherwise why are you busy searching for supplies?"
Ji Lin'an stood up: "You don't need to worry about that. We have our own way of living. Although you lack nothing, you lack freedom. We are not rich in resources, but we are happy with our lives."
When Xiao K heard about the lack of freedom, her expression visibly froze. After Ji Lin'an finished speaking, she didn't rush to reply, but instead picked up her tea and took a sip, saying, "We're very free, otherwise why would Xilang and I be running around everywhere? Don't you think so, Xilang?"
A trickle of blood trembled at the corner of Xilang's mouth as he forced a smile: "Yes, it's really free. You can go wherever you want, and there's even a private car to pick you up."
After Xilang finished speaking, the scene was unusually quiet, and no one responded.
