Chapter 52 Physical Examination

After finding our room, we went to the cafeteria on the second floor. The cafeteria was very large and divided into Chinese stir-fries, Chinese light meals (noodles and dumplings), Western steaks and pasta, and Western light meals (burgers and sandwiches). There were two other categories of cafeterias that we hadn't had time to look at before Xu Qi urged us to sit down. It was a large round Chinese table with four dishes and a soup on it, still steaming, and it looked like they had just come out of the pot.

After Xu Qi led us to our seats, he left, leaving only the four of us in the entire cafeteria. Qianliyan frowned: "Kaka and Xiao K just disappeared like that?"

I put a piece of meat in my mouth, picked up my phone and called Kaka, but no one answered. I then called Xiao K, but still no one answered. I said, "I guess they've finished their mission and can't be bothered with us anymore. They're probably off collecting their reward somewhere now."

Wu Feng said, "It seems so, otherwise how would they know you two are a couple and even prepare a double room for you?"

I nodded: "Yes, we didn't say anything beforehand or explain our relationship, and they just prepared a double room. Even if there were no mistakes today, they would have prepared three rooms instead of four. It's clear that they already know about my relationship with Lao Ji. Maybe the reason why the evaluation was delayed for so long today is because Xiao K and Kaka are fighting over our share of the people."

Thousand-Mile Eyes sneered: "You make it sound like we're lambs to the slaughter."

I laughed and said, "Aren't we?"

Ji Lin'an said, "Eat quickly, and go back to your room to rest well after you finish eating. We'll meet tomorrow morning and observe this place carefully to see if there's anything unusual."

We obediently finished the fight quickly and returned to our rooms. The rooms were nice, meeting five-star hotel standards. I also took a stroll through Qianliyan's room; the decor was identical to ours, except for the addition of a bed. Another common feature was a 60-70 cm ceramic doll figurine on the desk in both rooms. It was cute and lifelike, but it also had a slightly eerie feel to it. After returning to my room, I told Ji Lin'an about it. Ji Lin'an smiled and said, "This doll must be a specialty of this resort. Look downstairs, there are many corners with this doll."

I was still skeptical and about to ask my questions again when Ji Lin'an quickly pushed me towards the bathroom and said, "Come on, you've had a long day, let's take a shower first. This big bathroom is big enough for both of us to shower together."

I blushed instantly: "You want to take a bath with me, like lovers?"

Ji Lin'an laughed and said, "Can't I? I can even give you a bath. Don't be shy, we're an old married couple."

While I was still wondering why Ji Lin'an was acting so strangely today, he closed the bathroom door, turned on the faucet in the bathtub and turned the water on full blast. He pulled me to sit in the bathtub near the faucet and said in a serious tone, "You guessed right, there's something wrong with that doll. I noticed something when you went to Qianliyan's room. I transformed my treasure chest into a tool to scan for listening devices and cameras, and it showed that there was a listening device hidden in the doll's fist, and the cat's eye stone decoration on its forehead was a hidden camera."

I nervously whispered, "What about here?"

Ji Lin'an shook his head: "I've checked, there are no eavesdropping devices or cameras in the bathroom."

I was instantly relieved, but then asked even more anxiously, "According to what you said, there's a child every ten steps in the entire shelter. If it's all being monitored and listened to, then wouldn't we be under surveillance for everything we do?"

Ji Lin'an nodded: "Yes, so from now on, we must be careful with our words and actions."

Before Ji Lin'an could finish speaking, I immediately picked up my phone and texted Qianliyan and Wufeng to inform them about the wiretapping and surveillance, telling them not to talk nonsense and not to be overly vigilant. I only felt relieved after Qianliyan and Wufeng replied to me. To avoid arousing suspicion, Ji Lin'an and I took turns showering and then chatted casually for a while before going to sleep.

The next morning, in order to make it to breakfast, we arrived at the canteen early. Strangely, we didn't encounter any other survivors along the way, from our room to the elevator and from the elevator to the canteen. It wasn't until we entered the canteen that we saw a dense crowd of people. Everyone was sitting at their seats eating breakfast without exchanging any words. We looked at each other and then silently took what we wanted to eat and sat down. As I ate, I looked up and observed everyone. Everyone's expression was surprisingly the same. They weren't exactly expressionless, but rather unsmiling. The atmosphere was quite eerie.

After we finished breakfast, Xu Qi appeared in front of us: "Have you all finished eating?"

We all nodded, and Xu Qi said, "Then I'll take you all for a physical exam later."

Ji Lin asked, "Why are you having a physical exam?"

Xu Qi looked down at his phone without raising his head and said, "It's just a simple physical examination to check for malnutrition or other diseases."

I asked, "Why should we watch these?"

Xu Qi said, "Do you think everyone is like you, eating well and being plump in the apocalypse? Many survivors are starving and cold. Even if they have food, most of it is instant noodles. Many survivors are malnourished, and some even have liver problems, and some have lost limbs."

Seeing someone so fair and chubby, I couldn't help but look down at my own figure. Am I fat? I turned to look at Ji Lin and Qianliyan, and Qianliyan smiled and said, "Don't worry, he's talking about you. We're not fat. In fact, we can't gain weight no matter what we eat. Only you are fair and chubby."

I glared at Qianliyan speechlessly. Xu Qi led us out of our residence and through a small park in the area to a small hospital. It didn't look like it was built later, but rather that it was built before the apocalypse began. We followed him inside and were stopped at the entrance to have our identities checked one by one.
