Chapter 93 The Mist

The road to the left turns about 200 meters ahead, the road in front turns less than 50 meters ahead, and the road to the right turns about 100 meters ahead. We were all standing at the intersection. Ji Lin'an suggested going to the road in front, Song Yi, Wei Bin and Qianliyan wanted to go to the left, and Wufeng, Dai Qiang and the others wanted to go to the right. We were stuck in an awkward situation.

Seeing that our originally united team had suddenly broken apart, Chen Hu sneered and said, "Then let's all go our separate ways. Just split up. Anyway, we have to be back in the safe house before 7 p.m., otherwise the team will fail and no one will be able to go in to sleep."

Upon hearing Chen Hu's words, the expressions of the group immediately changed. Wu Feng said, "Then let's listen to Lao Ji. We'll go through from the front first. If we don't find anything after searching for fifteen minutes, we'll turn back and go to the left. If we still don't find anything, we'll come back and go to the right. Okay?"

I nodded: "Either way, let's just head straight ahead."

It wasn't that I was blindly following Ji Lin'an, but rather that I felt uneasy when I looked to the left and right. Only by taking the straight path did I feel more at ease.

When we walked straight ahead to the corner, we were stunned by what we saw. The road in front of us was exactly the same as the one we had just entered, with three forks. This time, we all chose the left-hand road. When we reached the corner again, there were the same three forks.

Ji Lin'an frowned: "Everyone, don't rush to leave. This is like a maze. Let's all memorize the route."

Everyone nodded, except for Wufeng, who was a little reluctant and muttered under his breath, "I said let's go that way, maybe the road there won't be like this."

I saw Wufeng frown and felt a surge of disgust. In that instant, I realized that Wufeng was no longer the simple-minded, muscle-bound fool I knew. I said, "How about we go back now? Take the path you mentioned?"

Wu Feng was a little flustered and waved his hand guiltily: "Let's go first. Didn't we say we'd try this way first? Since we're already here, let's continue."

To make the route easier to remember, we chose the left at every fork in the road. However, when we turned left for the third time, we found that we didn't return to our starting point. We continued to turn left at the fourth and fifth forks, but we were still in different places. Everyone panicked. Li Song said anxiously, "What kind of road is this? It's so strange. Should we go back?"

I wanted to say something more, but everyone had already turned around and walked back. Ji Lin'an walked up to me and took my hand: "Let's go. Maybe I chose the wrong route. Let's try another route."

I nodded and Ji Lin'an and I followed the group. We turned back to the starting point and chose the left route from there. When we reached the turning point, we found that the scenery had changed. It was no longer a three-way intersection like the one in front of us. Instead, there was a forest in front of us. Qianliyan said smugly, "See? I told you to take the left. You had to waste time going to the middle route."

I didn't speak or pay attention to the all-seeing eye. I looked at the forest in front of me and it seemed familiar, like the zombie forest from before. I cautiously reminded them, "Let's be careful. I think this forest looks like the zombie forest."

Thousand-Mile Eyes pursed his lips and walked to the front, stretching out his hand as he went. After walking for about 5 minutes without seeing the barrier of the zombie forest, Thousand-Mile Eyes turned to look at me and said, "We've been walking for half a day now, there's definitely no zombie forest left. We don't need to grind for points to exchange for weapons anymore."

As soon as Qianliyan finished speaking, I smelled a strange scent, like the fragrance of flowers, but with a sour and astringent taste mixed in. Soon everyone could smell it. Based on my years of experience watching movies, I felt that there was something fishy about this smell. I quickly said, "Everyone cover your mouths and noses, beware of a trap."

Song Yi was the first to take off her coat and wrap it around her face. I wanted to take mine off too, but Ji Lin'an stopped me, saying, "You have a lot of masks in your space, right? Take them out."

I thought for a moment and realized there was indeed a box of dusty masks. I quickly took them out and distributed them to everyone. While everyone was putting on their masks, a thick fog suddenly rolled in behind us. The fog spread very quickly, which was alarming. Li Song was the first to take off running. Ji Lin'an shouted, "Li Song, don't run! Be careful not to get separated from everyone!"

Li Song didn't stop: "You guys run too, what if this fog is poisonous? That's how it's always set up in movies."

Upon hearing this, everyone immediately followed Li Song and started running. Ji Lin'an also pulled me forward. The mist was moving faster than us, and soon our vision was blocked by the mist, with visibility less than a meter. I quickly shouted, "Everyone, stop running! Be careful not to get separated!"

No one answered me. Ji Lin'an and I stopped. I tentatively called out, "Song Yi, An Xin, can you hear me?"

A voice came from not far away: "Sister, I'm up ahead."

Ji Lin'an and I quickly walked towards the direction of the sound. After walking about four or five meters, we vaguely saw Song Yi standing alone, leaning against a tree. Song Yi called out in the opposite direction, "Wei Bin, where are you?"

Ji Lin'an and I walked to the tree, and Song Yi leaned towards us in a panic: "Sister, Wei Bin and the others are gone."

I grabbed Song Yi with my other hand: "Come on, let's look ahead. They shouldn't have gone far in this short time."

I held onto Ji Lin'an on my left and Song Yi on my right, calling out the names of the missing people as we walked. Suddenly, we heard several gunshots ahead. We quickly moved forward, but the gunshots grew closer. I felt a whoosh, a bullet whizzing past my ear. Ji Lin'an immediately pulled Song Yi and me to crouch down and shouted, "Who's up ahead?"

A trembling male voice rang out: "Old Ji, it's me, Zhang Funan."

Ji Lin'an said, "Don't fire yet, come this way to us."

Zhang Funan said tremblingly, "Someone wants to kill me, and they're in the vicinity."

Ji Lin'an and I exchanged a glance: "Don't be afraid, you come this way first, and we'll come this way to you too."

We took a few steps forward and saw Zhang Funan, who was hunched over, holding a gun and looking around. I quickly shouted, "Clairvoyant, we're here."

Zhang Funan immediately turned to look at us, ran over with a wronged expression, and grabbed Ji Lin'an: "Old Ji, someone just tried to kill me, but luckily I was wearing a bulletproof vest and they didn't hurt me."

Ji Lin'an looked around warily. I pulled Zhang Funan around and turned him around. Sure enough, there was a bullet embedded in his back. The bullet had a small caliber and a short length. It was completely blocked by the bulletproof vest and didn't even touch Zhang Funan's skin.

I pulled out the bullet and handed it to Ji Lin'an. Ji Lin'an glanced at it and frowned, saying, "This bullet is from a pistol."

I frowned and said, "Our own people all have rifles, how could there be a pistol bullet among them?"

Ji Lin'an thought for a moment: "There might be other people here. Let's hurry up and find the rest."
